Tam, Jade and Franky's European Adventure

Also what about the small cog on the gear shifter - are the teeth on it OK or is it bent or distorted - again the breaking of the chain could have caused damage to it

Yes that's where I'm thinking the problem lies but it's hard to tell as I never paid much attention to it before.

I'll take a few pics of it shortly

Here's a few pics ...dont know if they will help.
Hate when I can't fix things or solve the problem and I'm hating not being able to use the damm thing.

Hi Tam it looks like your derailier is not forward enough to me so the chain is not wrapping around the rear gear enough.

Hi Tam, nobody seems to mentioned about getting the wee dug spayed (after her first season) otherwise once in season she will have every dug in Spain chasing her, also getting her sorted out for her return to the UK i.e; pet passport, jabs etc.

Aye I said that in my first post about getting her ( pay attention back of class :p ) she's too young yet so I've to bring her back to Silvia in a month or so to have her sterilised and have all her blood tests done.

That's normally all done before adoptionwith their dogs but because she's still only 3 months old in this case it's not been done yet.

Her rabies , passport etc have all been done so all good on that front

Have you indexed the gears since replacing the chain link, lots of vids on you tube showing how.

It looks to me as if the body of the derailleur has been twisted but it may be that is how it is meant to be, it takes a fair amount of force to snap a chain and something could have bent in the process.

@Northernraider the deraileur unit is too far back its been twisted rearwards loosen the shiny socket head screw and rotate the whole unit anti clock so that it sits under the cog set , and wraps round the cogs more :)

Jees I don't even know what that is lol.. I just joined the chain and thought it would be fine.
Admittedly these days I've not a clue with bikes unless they have engines.

I stripped the derailuer off the bike earlier and cleaned and loosened everything off, it seems to be a little better now but still does it occasionally under strain ie going up a hill.
Guy in decathlon didn't have a clue.
The derailuer does seem to sit very far back and you can move it where it attached to the frame which I'm not sure if that's supposed to do that or not.
It does seem to be a little better now I've cleaned it and sprayed all the parts with wd40...maybe something is sticking it's hard to see when pedalling it and it doesn't do it unless under strain so I'm baffled.
Worse case scenario I'll have one of the bike shops in totana check it out tomorrow

I did that but it seems to just move back

It only sits forward when it's on the biggest front cog ...otherwise it seems to tuck in under the rear cog

I forgot to say Tam, I’m dubious of puppy training pads, I’ve had dogs all my life and never used them because I think it confuses them into thinking it’s ok to wee and poo inside.
As she’s a rescue she may be harder to train...

Far better to keep a really watchful eye and keep taking her outside so she knows that’s where she goes. A gentle “no! Wee wees outside” if she has any accidents inside and carry her straight out even mid stream if nessesary! However, if she has accidents inside that you miss, simply clean it up and ignore it.

Positive reward for the behaviour you want and expect is far better in my humble opinion than negative telling off for unwanted behaviour.

Also don’t forget 5 mins per month of age walking per day to protect her bones so at 3 months only 15mins. This rule isn’t quite as important for small breeds as they develop quicker. She should be sleeping for around 18 hours a day too.

Very common for puppies to get over tired and go a bit mental...that’s where popping her into the crate covered with a blanket works wonders.

Good luck and I’ll shut up now! It’s only because we’ve recently been through it all with Mills who obviously is now the best trained dog in Wales.....not o_O

I can still hear those s*^*ing bells ..... Millie certainly knew how to use them to get us to let her out into the garden every 5 minutes .... (she is gorgeous BTW... ) xx

When you replaced the chain links did you take the same amount off as you put on...? The chain could be too long..?

It's not that difficult, even I managed it following the you tube clips, just involves slackening the cables, adjusting the stops that limit the travel and then getting the correct tension on the cable.....simples:)

Another vote for the chain being too long or slack.

Difficult to describe in text ..even explaining it to the guy in decathlon was difficult.
You really need to ride the bike to feel what it's doing and then I really need to compare the movement on my derailer to someone else's bike because I'm not sure if it's supposed to move at one of the parts that is moving.
Where it attaches to the frame via the centre bolt the body of the derailer can move almost 90 degrees.

Can't wait for tomorrow to see how you get on with your new wee companion :)

Possibly stretched other links when under the tension needed to snap one of the links, were you changing gear under load when it snapped?
Yes I was trying to get up a steep hill left it too late to change down gear stood up to pedal and snap ....it broke

Just been watching one of those videos on YouTube...he does make it sound easy

And one of those stands would certainly help.

There are times when a dog in a motorhome is not such as good idea. As our Charlie demonstrates below!

They certainly make it a lot easier, I have used one of the tow bar mounted v shape bike racks to do it in the past.

My dad gave me a good tip for checking when a chain is knackered, when it is off turn it on its side and hold it out, it should not bend too much, if it bends through 90 degrees it is well gone.

A better way with an explanation

@Northernraider
Look at this pic , this shows you the position your changer should be in with the pantograph carrier almost horizontal , so the chain is wrapped round the cogs , otherwise the chain will slip :)

See mine won't stay in that position, with it only having one central bolt attaching it the the bike frame it's free to move regardless of how much I tighten it.

Right I now have all my puppy supplies

Spent a fortune today lol.
I wish I knew there was more than one name for puppy in Spanish I've been to 3 shops for food and couldn't see perrito on any of them

Cachorra. ...whod have guessed
