Tam, Jade and Franky's European Adventure

When looking at this Hymer, check the window lock strips, these break with age and cost around £50 for each.
Also in RHD I would your happy with the wiper sweep, ours is LHD and I wouldn’t want to drive it in the rain if RHD.

The wipers on a uk spec RHD Hymer will be the correct way around. Don’t forget to check the windscreen for cracks/chips......they are a fortune to replace.

Right I'm here now and had a good look round. Roof seals look fine and original
Roof needs a clean but isn't bad mine was worse originally.

Floor is solid there is one soft spot on the outside very rear corner opposite shower side.
Shower tray has no cracks

The two rear cupboards above the fixed bed seem to have been relined but can't see any sign of leaks

The whole van is a little dirty but it's cleanable

Generally it looks ok I'm trying to remember it's 14 years old and older than franky was

With a bit of tlc It would be a lot better

Couple of little broken bits a light lens above sink cooker etc

So bottom line it's 19k

Should I expect it to be perfect lol or am I being too fussy?

I think they’re always the same way, with a big blind spot on right hand side.

No doubt wiser folk than me will advise you of it's value.
If it only needs a bit of tlc ando a couple of minor superficial jobs done you know you are perfectly capable of doing those so it's just a question of will you be happy with it after the luxurious Franky?
I would think your bank balance would be very happy.

19k is a heck of a lot less than a new van and even top dollar new vans are rarely perfect. We were well used to the route to the dealer when our Carthago was new.
As long as its basically sound go for it. You have the experience to sort out the little bits and pieces.
Good luck.

Richard.

Sounds as though you made your mind up Tam. Good luck. I'm expecting to read soon "yep i bought it"

I think compared to franky anything at this age is gonna seem a little dated etc but it does seem structure sound I was surprised it's just a steel chassis and not galvanised so that could do with a wire brush and a coat of hammerite

Inside the water pressure is a little low and stuff compared to franky

I think everything can be straightened up and cleaned up so not too big a problem

I do suspect the rear high level brake light has let water in at some point as the two very rear cupboards inside don't look or feel original ...It's like a black cloth like material in there and I can feel polystyrene behind it but below the cupboards around the window and lower panel etc are all perfect and no signs of any water damage or staining etc so I may be completely wrong

Oh and the front bumper where it joins the arches is cracked on both sides and held together with a bit of duct tape lol

Aye Tam - just buy it!! :)

You have to ask at half the price of Franky is it twice as bad ?

Franky will have spoiled you as you are going down not up :)

The back of the cupboards should be just a plywood panel moulded into a curve.
Can't imagine what the black cloth is but doesn't sound original.

The high level brake light on ours-2001- seems to be sealed with small drain holes for drainage to the outside.

Yep I know that's half the issue lol.

Yep this definately isn't original but I don't want to pull it off in front of the guy
The high level brake light looks a bit tampered with and I suspect it's had water In there once and someone's done a repair inside the two back high level cupboards
Its certainly dry at the minute and there's no obvious stains or damage beneath them.
The two roof seals both front and back look original and not tampered with so just that one spot which I think I could do a better job of.

What did Jade think?
Did it get her approval...
She hasn't seen it she was in the car
Just took her for a little walk as I'm parked in the pub carpark next door till I have it some thought ...this wee bugger just rolled in cow shit so she's not getting near the van lol.

Are you still in leek tam.
What are your plans tonight

I've jist viewed this burstner harmony in kirkcaldy

https://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/motorhome/1315625987

Leaking skylights, signs of a leak on back wall, both sides someone has stuck silicone along the joints between roof and walls, upholstery is filthy, lifted shower Matt to check tray and slimey gunk all over it, van hasnt been cleaned, does come with a load of extras full safari room etc and a 32 inch tv lol.
Nothing that can't be fixed or cleaned up but 13k would be more likely to me though I doubt he'd accept it.
What are the water and waste tank capacities compared to Frankie? If you like spending a few days off grid will it carry enough water?

RHD, wipers park to the left. LHD is opposite.

Still not bought it yet lol

Can't drive it home today anyway so he's happy with me telling him either way once I'm home.

I.like the van it's the layout I want I'm pretty sure there's more than enough storage and payload

There's just the odd niggle here and there but that could well be me expecting too much for the price.
Compared to other hymer models and years it's well priced and there's nothing I can't fix on it

It does have higher miles than most MH but not high for a commercial

I've still a 3 hour drive home so still time to think on it

We've just stopped for kfc jade is having chicken fillet strips but she has been very patient today so deserves a reward

Washing machine is sold though lol

Hmmm, did you take the damp meter Tam, did it come on time.

I would say buy if it wasn't for the possible cupboards not being original. Doesn't sound quite right Tam. If not 100% sure then don't buy it at the minute, there are always plenty of vans coming along at the right price, especially at this time of year.

There is plenty of rain in Scotland remember, walk away if not certain.

Tam, it's got dual gas low bottles with a t piece? Whatever will you find to argue about on forum if it has? Or are you going to retrofit and swap over bottles.... ;)

The cupboards themselves are original it's just inside them on the back wall isn't but like I said there's actually no sign of water or damp

The seal around high level brake light looks a bit off and the cupboards have been relined but if it was due to water ingress I think it's been caught early

The present owner says he knows nothing about it which isn't surprising as he's pretty clueless about the van lol

I'm confident I can tidy that up better and to be honest I will check and reseal any roof vents etc as I always do

I think in the right hands and if it cleans up it will be a good van

Its just my tight Scottish ass worried about residual value should it not turn out to be the right van lol

Haven't seen many available with this layout

Plenty on burstners rapidos etc but they dint have the double floor and less storage
Also not sure about their winter use whereas this should be ok in winter

I'll know by the time I'm home :)

Unless anyone on here finds me suitable alternatives to consider over the next 3 hours

That's your mission should you choose to accept it

Right I've gotta get home jade needs a bath I'm inhaling cow poop and she stinks
