So I have a dilemma :(

Me old bike is still jumping gear's noe and then and its really needing something done.
Probably a new chain I thought

Took it to the bike shop in Almeria today to let them have a look and he's saying it probably needs a chain a rear cassette and all the front cogs replacing. He says jist a chain €30 chain and cassette €50 and for chain cassette and cogs €100

Now it's not an expensive bike and I only paid £50 for it second hand so I'm not sure if it's worth spending 100 euro on it or not
It's been a good bike but back home I could probably pick up a decent second hand bike for what it needs to fix it.

I also suspect that once they start to fix it they will probably discover more bits need replaced :(

I've been getting more in to using the bike and do maybe 25 -30 km a day bit I'm no Chris hoy lol

Next time your using the facilities at a site pop in to reception and most have somewhere the residents can pop up ads. You usually find a few people selling pushers.
Leave your bike out at night , wait up and when you hear them taking it , ask them if they have any good ones for sale
@Northernraider
Take up jogging.
All very useful replies :p

But do I just did the blooming bike or just suffer it oot

I very rarely open the windows just through habit ....but all the skylights are open.

It is very warm tonight I've been in the Dutch van next door lol

If you buy a second hand bike you could be a few days (with your mileage) away from a worn out gear jumping wind up machine again, depending on what sort of life it's had. It's not that easy to tell if you don't know what you are looking for.

In the grand scheme of things, 100 euros for a complete new drive train will be good for months if not years. And if it's not right, you can chuck it back at the shop.

Probably spend the 100€ if you’re happy with the rest of the bike, if not splash out & buy a new one!!!
It’s still a cheap bike!

Yes having slept on it and been out on it with jade this morning listening to it creak and groan I decided to just put it in the shop and tell him to do what needs done but not to go over 120 euros as the bike isn't worth it.

It's been a good bike and it was cheap enough when I bought it .

If I was a cycling enthusiast doing hundreds of miles I of course would buy an expensive all singing and dancing new bike. .But I just use it for pottering about really.

I'd like an off road one too but I don't have the space in the garage for one just now because of the scooter so no point buying another one just now.

I've left it with them and he says it shouk d be ready by 8pm tonight and if any problems he will phone me

I expect a call lol

I can tell you're a youngster! Every bike l owned as a kid was built by me from bits scrounged or found at the local tip. I would never dream of taking a bike somewhere to have it fixed just to save a happy hours tinkering in the sun .

There are a lot more different options these days, the number of gears on the rear cassettes can be anything from 6 - 11 and you need the right chain for the right cassette etc etc, the shop will be far less hassle even if you do have all the time in the world.

Wish I hadn't bothered about the bike and just suffered it ....shop closes at 8pm

I got here around 7.30 having not received a phone call so assumed it was ok.

Got here and it's in bits , the guy I spoke to who's the only one who speaks English is doing something with a customer somewhere in the store , a woman has made an attempt at telling me the wheel is broken or something and they can't get the cassette off it.

Been kept waiting 30 minutes on the guy that speaks English coming to speak to me but basically if it needs all that work I'd be aswell buying another bike :(
At least it was still useable when I brought it in to the shop ....

And still waiting on the guy

So eventually the guy came and spoke to me about the bike and he says they can't get the gear off the wheel so I would need a new wheel that would push the price up yo about 150 euros and the bike just isn't worth that so they are going to put it back together and I'll get it back at 11am tomorrow.

So then I'll need to look for a new bike and will probably just strip the good bits of this one and bin it

There's a cash converters here so I might have a look there tomorrow and if not I'll nip up to decathlon

The cheapest bike that shop had which was pretty basic was 600 euro and too dear for me for what I use it for

Look in Carrefour and similar big supermarkets often they have bikes for sale for 100 to 200 Euros :)

Surely Al Campo is bigger and better value and a greater choice of leisure products than French owned Carrefour? We have just got back from a trip to France and Spain - Carrefour ain’t what it used to be. It certainly isn’t cheap any more.

I've not heard of that one I'll Google and see if there's one near here

Ah it woukd seem there is and it's not far from decathlon and carrefour so I'll check them all tomorrow

I did say "Carrefour and similar big supermarkets" - not meaning to necessarily support Carrefour in particular! :)

Most decent sized supermarché in France have bikes for sale so it’s probably the same in Spain!
Cash Converters is a good idea.
If you are going to change the van (eventually) and get a smaller one (Hymer 584) you won’t have a garage so why not just go for an off road bike now? As you say yourself you’re only pottering about, you would save money in the long run!
