Tam, Jade and Franky's European Adventure

Hows Jade this morning? boil up some rice and give her the water from it then some rice later. I followed this advice given to me and it worked a treat with blue. Also watch she's not getting too hot.
She seems fine now ...gave her a little fokd last night and the same this morning. ..hwr stools were normal this morning

But

She ran off when we were out again this morning and before I could get her to come back she was scoffing things off the beach again .

Getting really frustrated with this now as it doesn't matter what treats I have on me or how sweetly I talk to her etc she just will not come back and runs off in the opposite direction when I try to go to her ....she will go running to anyone else bar me and jumps up on them etc ( this is down to other folk giving her treats when we are out)
I don't know what the answer is :(

I don't know if it's because she was on the streets for a bit or whether previous owner chased her or what but it doesn't matter how much I call her she complete ignores me doesn't even look in my direction just keeps nose down and darts away when I get close.

If there's no food around she will come back no problem but the slightest hint of food and until shes eaten it all she won't come near

Try clicker or whistle training. A whistle might be better. When she's eating a meal blow whistle, remove food. Blow whistle, replace food. Do it for a couple of meals. Then try whistle, give treat. Once she's certain that whistle = treat try it at greater distances. I'm crap at this sort of thing :) but I know that often a dog will respond if you can break it's concentration on what it's doing at the time. Don't try it when she's playing with another dog until she's rock solid in other areas. If you have a good, solid, repeatable, ability to whistle yourself use that. It's much more macho :D.

Feel your frustration from that post Tam, no ideas but do wish you luck. Mozzie bites pure hell, had 1 on my eye lid once & in an unmentionable place!!!!!

Have you tried reverse psychology? When she runs away and gets her nose in to something try walking away from her altogether. Might scare her into behaving.

I've done that ....and it failed as she went in the opposite direction following someone so I ended up with twice the distance to go after her ...each time I've vowed it's the last time she gets of the lead but that doesn't work either

It's certainly a tough call but, in my opinion, you can only let a dog off the lead if you have 100% control over it.

Whether it's running off, eating, fighting, jumping up etc unless you can stop the unwanted action from a distance, it needs to be on a lead.

I can't trust my dog not to run off when he sees a bird - totally deaf to my commands - so he doesn't get let off in public places.

Yes unfortunately I think that's the route I'm going to have to go down which is crap as it's going to really restrict us.
Especially now as she's used to getting off so she misbehaves on the lead in order to get off it. Even now we are parked up on.the beach and she's on her extended lead outside .....in the last hour she hasn't lay down once she's combed the entire area she can reach on the lead sniffing for food ....and will chew stones instead :(

When Blue went to Dog training he was taught with a choke chain. Talk to Jade, teach her to sit stay, using hand gestures so through time she will learn. Keep her on the long leash and just keep moving a few steps backwards, she moves put her straight back with a reaffirming “Stay” she will get the message. Blue had 6 obedience trophies :-)

Thing is she does all that when on the lead.

She sits comes etc ....and even of the lead she will come back. ..if there's no food about.

But when there's food she basically decides until shes eaten that food she isn't coming near me because I'll stop her.

Problem is there's food waste discarded a over the place here.

So it's almost impossible to avoid.

She's just a good obsessed greedy bugger

You'd think I never fed her and I've no idea how to get that out of her I'm not sure you can

We did the whistle with her food thing with our Springer (notorious for running off), and it worked in the end. Now she’s really good with the whistle, even if she’s ignoring a shout!

Tam.... forget the short lead and the extendible lead she needs a proper 10 meter training lead. You can drop this on the floor when she’s on the beach or where ever she’s normally off the lead. If she’s doing something she shouldn’t you only have to get within 30 feet of her and step on her lead. Good safety measure as well if she goes toward a danger area.

You’re not going to like this.........A dog is a pack animal. You have to be the leader of the pack. At the moment, she is the boss, and she is taking the xxxx out of you. You are being too easy going, and she needs lots of strict training,10minutes each session, sit and stay. Do this every couple of hours....she’ll get to know you are the boss. Then over longer distances. Be firm, give small rewards.
This will work.Been there,done that.Good luck.

Tam it seems to me your just going to have to feed her, instead of hoping she will find some scraps on the beach. :D.

Great blog keep it coming. (y)

Good advice from @chrisinplymouth Tam we do this with Roly when she's 'off lead' on the beach (only when there are no other dogs in striking distance). We use the opportunity to practice recall, any trouble with eating stuff or ignoring us and we can step on the lead and grab it.

Some dogs never stop foraging and you may need to use a muzzle for certain areas. I know you don't want to but it's better than the alternative if she doesn't grow out of it.

Tam, I'm in the UK at the moment but hope to be back by my lovely lake by the end of July if you have to rush home at any point, I will gladly collect and care for Jade for you.

@reckless it took over 2 years before ours came off the training lead. @Podney Good advice on the sit and stay as well, we still do this daily and he’s nearly 4. Also make sure when entering and leaving the van you go first and she sits and waits until you call her through then reward her. Lots of little steps!

Jade is still a baby and needs more training and as stated above she is taking the p....s!
You need to be more assertive and she needs to be on a lead or the trailing leash.
Get your ground rules in place, she must sit when you tell her and she must return.
When you go out do at least 10 mins of training, walking to heel, sit, sit & stay, anything really as long as it drums into her your authority then go for your walk or play, alway make a fuss of her and tell her she's good but only when she does it right otherwise you’re giving her the wrong idea.
When she runs off & you get here back don’t tell her off & don’t tell her she’s a good girl just ignore it put her on the lead and do something else.
The sit & stay specially over a distance is very useful and G never gets to eat her meal until we’ve told her she can, she sits and waits while I put the food down then I make her wait 3 or 4 seconds before telling her she can have it!
Maybe a good idea to attend some training classes when you get back home.
You may find she will change a bit when she’s been spayed!

I'm no dog training expert, and it's clear to see from the previous comments there are many different ways to go about it. I think a muzzle would be a good idea for her own well being (oh, and dogs have to be muzzled on some ferry crossings if you take them on deck, so may be of use on your future travels), I know it's a bit embarrassing as it looks like you have a vicious dog, but her health is most important.

I have 2 Ridgebacks, and it took until they were nearly 2 years old for me to have much trust and control, they younger one was a sod for stealing other dogs balls, one morning he stole 6, as I was struggling to get them back the owners were saying "it's ok, don't worry, keep it" I could have have opened a market stall just selling second hand dog balls!! He then got another 3 in the afternoon!

The way I overcame that was teaching him "Wait" if I could get him to stand still, I could either prevent the theft or take the ball off him. Standing still works for a lot of things and situations. Not that he would stand still if there was a cat, rabbit or (his favorite) a squirrel in sight!!!

Ultimately, you will never have 100% control unless she goes in to full time training with the police or guide dog association, even then I'm not sure you could categorically say you know what is going to happen all the time.

She is still so young, I know it's frustrating, but I could see mine weren't listening to me for the first year+, when they calmed down a bit and started to be interested in what I had to say things were pretty easy.

I knew someone whose dog, when out for a walk, was an expert in picking up used condoms!

Tam, you have a Kindle, haven't you? There's loads of dog training books on their site. Cesar Millan's books are not cheap but he's one of the best dog trainers in the world.

Tam, don't let her chew stones if she starts swallowing them it can get expensive. Daughters Springer has had two ops after swallowing stones first one cost £3500, second one £1500 lucky insurance paid up.

For your Mozilla bites get some antihistamine pills.

It's the same beach but this part is in the nature park .....you can't overnight here but I drive here daytime and move back to the carpark to sleep.

Are you sure it’s not grey now you’ve got a dog!!!!!

Only joking.

You've managed to take a photo of the wrong van Tam, that one has its awning out.

Looks brilliant. What kind of temperature you getting there?
