Tam & co the great winter escape

Gawdd the van is full of doggy hormones tonight ....ela is desperate to be friends with jade and milo ...jade is still giving ela funny looks at times and is acting a little cagey sometimes too. Now theyve had a disagreement over dinner as jade and milo had finished eating and ela went to investigate the bowls ...cue a bit of growling back n forth between jade and ela ....then ela acts all timid with me again ...struggling to get her bum up on the sofa ...she doesn't jump she kind of puts her front half up then tries to wiggle her rear end up but fails ....so i went to help her and big panic she backs off in to the cab......she tries to sniff at milo and nudge him and he shows his teeth and scampers back up on the sofa... They are all up and sleeping now but i hope they all bond again soon ....its too small in here to have fur flying.

Ela still scoffing her food down ....im having to take the bowl away a few times while she's eating to slow her down a bit ...which is sort of working.

Do you have a Kong or similar? We use them - stuff their food in and they then spend ages licking it out.

It certainly slows our big 'un down - he practically inhales his food!

Don't feed them their full dinner at once, just put a little bit in the bowls and then leave it a while and do the same again, that way even if she gobbles she won't be able to stuff herself.

I know you haven't got a lot of space in the van but try and feed Ela as far away as possible from the other 2 , also try and give jade & milo theirs 1or so minute before you feed Ela so they have more chance to eat theirs first as you don't want them to start squabbling over food.

This happened to me when I last used Polar Steps. I was touring in the Hebrides and Polar Steps had me popping back home to Devon!!!
I found it frustrating because I couldn't delete the false trails.

I already have them all seperated and ella doesn't get near them till their finished. Jade just being her usual bossy self i think ...but she's confused as Ella is twice her size whereas bossing Milo is easy lol

And you can have your tea when they have all eaten.
No i used to give jade and milo theirs at the same time as me but they now all wait till im finished mine . Few rule changes happening in this van lol as i need all 3 of them to know who is in charge.

Sorted that now ....it seems my phone in my pocket had planned a trip to egypt then columbia and back 😁 .....they were in planned locations ...soon as i deleted them its back to normal

Put some big pebbles in the bowl (big enough not to be swallowed!!!) She'll have to chase her food around them so it should slow her down.

They're just sorting out their rank under the additional pressure of space & time.
As long as you're top dog, physically disciplining if necessary, they'll sort out the minor places... and Jade might have to learn she's demoted. Poor Milo is destined to be bottom of the pile/pack.

If no pebbles try a ball in her dish that worked with one of ours. Good luck and well done rescuing her, they are all lovely dogs.
What size of bowls do you guys think i have lol. Any pebbles id fit in those she would likely swallow ....and you can ask Lenny HB about that lol.

It may well be she's just used to having to fight for her food and may settle down when she realises she no longer has to .

But for now i won't be feeding them unsupervised anyway so i just interrupt her ever so often so she has to stop.

Im sure they will work it out in time. I think they will bond better once she can be let off the lead and run around with them again like she was doing before.

i spread our dogs food around the outside of the dish leaving the center clear. he then cant gulp from the middle and it makes him have to maneuver around the dish to get into the corners.
seems to slow him somewhat.

I think that will make her gobble faster, in case she isnt going to get it back - pebbles, young man, pebbles!
Or half a dozen very small feeds.

We have one with bones raised up!

Works a treat!!

Cheers James

From what I've read, just use your instincts, they appear to be good! (y)

Kerry, my rescue greyhound, eats as if her food will be taken away at any moment.
I've had her 4 years, and she hasn't learned there is no competition, no time limit. Still eats as fast as she can.
Our Lily's always been like that, she's 13 now so not gonna change, our Tazzy and Minky on the other hand are such dainty eaters, I love listening to them as they make such a pleasant noise and seem to really enjoy their food.

one we have now picks at her food and comes down at night to eat last one didnt need a bowl as he would take it as it came out the tin

Yes jade and milo take their time ...they were often more grazers . I could leave food in the bowl all day and they would go back and forth when they felt like it. Problem is now if i left the food down all day ela would scoff it. She may change but if not ill have to just stick with feeding them all separately then lifting the bowls when they've all done. None of them are going to go hungry as they all get treats and titbits through the day anyway. Treats after walks for instance and bits of whatever I'm having for lunch. We will all just adapt accordingly .

On a separate note has anyone driven from turkey to greece with dogs at any point?

It was just something the vet said yesterday when she was asking how long i was staying in greece before taking ela home and id said probably till February unless i go to turkey for a few weeks then back to Greece etc and she said that maybe i would need a titre test done because turkey not in the EU......i said to her that id entered greece from Albania that was also not in the EU but that no one at any of the border crossings had paid the slightest interest in the dogs at any time. ...she then said yes they might not . But now the seed has been planted I'm wondering if I'd have any problems as i am considering maybe going in to turkey after new year.
