Tam & co the great winter escape

Moved on today after lunch to Tirana ...that was an interesting drive. The drivers here are the worst ive encountered anywhere. No lane discipline...and some of the vehicles have to be seen to be believed ...no lights on many off them , scooters passing on both sides ...people and various animals in the roads even the main roads ...there was a man today on a scooter leading about 30 turkeys on ropes behind him on a dual carriageway with a 90kmp speed limit on it ...cows , goats you name it .. one big stretch of road outside Tirana at least 5 miles long is just yards selling car parts ,building materials and loads of hand car washes ...like bo exaggeration there must have been 40 or 50 in the one stretch of road ...a few miles on and its gridlock ...only moving half a car length at a time ...bendy busses like youve never seen they have 4 parts to them so twice the length of a normal bendy and driven by psychopaths ...scooters and cyclists going the wrong way up the road filtering between cars .... absolute madness. Diesel is very expensive at €1.83 and above and they only take cash 🤦‍♂️ ... Cash machines charge for every withdrawal ...and only give lek ....3000 lek is around £20 but it costs you £23.85 to withdraw it. Badly need a supermarket now. And ive heard many of those only take cash too. Still lots of very dodgy looking characters around . But the people we have spoken to all seem very friendly so perhaps its just perception. Took us 3 hours to drive through Tirana ...2 places we looked at stopping were dirty and smelly so we are about 5 miles south now in a hotel carpark as it got dark. Not going to bother attempting to go back in to the city. Rain forecast for the next week so im hoping it's wrong. Possibly head for berat tomorrow once i have found another bank and filled up with diesel and found a supermarket. ....we will see.

The one and only photo i took today was milo posing View attachment 560519
is that his burt reynolds pose .needs a stetson

I wonder why that is. Albania strikes me as the kind of country where they wouldn't really care when a bar opens.

Maybe religion related 🤷‍♂️

IF it's like other things in that part of the world, there's the OFFICIAL ruling but one can pay for extra's ;);)

With the starting issue, when you have time and have settled down for a bit you could rig up a temporary tank with something like a 2Ltr plastic milk carton and gravity feed the fuel by passing the non-return valve to rule that out or in.

You're not painting a very appealing picture of Albania
It sounds a bit too lawless for most
Thanks for the update though, useful information
Just giving my opinion on what ive seen so far. But there is some beautiful scenery around and from the people we've spoken to the locals are friendly ....its different. I think thats how I'd describe it .

Im not sure he never said ....although this country is claimed to not have a religion theres a definate strong muslim presence theres a lot of mosques and very old mosques....that town shengjin that was next to Mario's place ....they took in 2500 afghan regfugees just last month ...but apparently they had to pay .

But then theres also signs of Catholicism too as statues of the pope here and there .

But not sure if its to do with that or not

Quite an interesting read on religion in Albania.

its almost as bad as the old Turkish Lira before it got devalued, your pocket was not big enough for the roll of notes equivalent to £100

I remember paying 30,000 TL for an antique genuine Persian silver box in a small town at the bottom of mount Ararat. It was something like £20... I still have the box and it is Persian hall marked.
I went on october '97 & it was 300,000=£ Went back the following july & I'm sure it was 1,400,0000= £:giggle:

Ive just been out with the dogs in the rain for a pee....i didn't realise this lovely parking spot jackie picked for us in the carpark of the Elvis hotel was lovers paradise .....ive seen less condoms and tissues in a family planning clinic ....yuck

We were meant to be parking somewhere else but jackie missed the turning and then got flustered and kept going so i had to go find her in the dark last night and this is where she had picked lol.

Have to go in search of diesel and a supermarket this morning. Will have to borrow some Euros of Jackie till i get to Greece as i never brought any cash with me this time thinking id just get some when/if i need it as mostly use my card and previous years ive ended up with a load of euros to get rid of before going home.

Never realised of course that Albania dealt mainly in cash ...

Fortunately jackie brought euros this time which she hadn't done last time lol

Finally arrived in berat about 40 minutes ago ...jackie got lost twice again while following me ... she's getting very rebellious these days thinking her Satnav knows better than mine then she gets lost and ive to sit at the side of the road waiting for her ...driving me nuts it is .

Anyway we've arrived at berat and parked by the castle . Had a quick walk round it between rain storms . Will attempt to visit the old town tomorrow.

Albania officially the worst country ive visited for rubbish everywhere. Its unreal

I was hoping Jackie was still with you and hadn't diverted off on her own anywhere. It sounds a bit too risky for female solo travellers.
Enjoying the thread.👍
No i don't think she'll go off on her own till we are in Greece ...then she might go off doing her own thing here and there and meet up again at different places. She's not too sure in these countries and has said several times she wouldn't have come to these countries on her own .

I do think that having a bit of company when travelling is really good, being able to share the adventures is a plus. But also good to do some things on your own when it’s required. Glad that Jackie is with you at the moment cause I would be the same as her. Looking at your photos and your info I certainly could not have done the last few places on my own.

Word of warning if you ever venture in to Albania . The petrol stations will rip you off if like me you get caught out .

Ive discovered that the price on the petrol pumps is actually lek despite it saying euro .

So today the pump said €1.83 but it actually means 183lek per litre .

So he put in 42.750 litre and the pump showed 78.23 so i gave him 80 euro .....he gave me 276 lek change

Then he gave me receipt which i just shoved in my pocket

Only now did i notice its actually in lek
20211126_163139.jpg

183 lek is €1.50 so 7823lek is just over €63 ....236lek is around €2 so the swine diddled me out of €15

If it wasnt so far away id have been going back .

The pumps obviously cant display lek and as they only accept cash its a con they will get away with a lot

Thanks for replies as I thought that perhaps my computa thingy wasn't workin propa :giggle:

Its not his fault you don't have the right money though is it?
He has probably got to change your 80 euros at a big loss as well.

According to his other blog he is still in the same place, but he did say he was going to rest a couple of days.
He seems to be doing a lot of walking around at his last place.

Is that the exercise area for the prison? Probably got banged up for his opinion on the rubbish :giggle: but seriously, I hope he's okay!
Yeah in fact looking at the other polar steps thing, he doesn't seem to have updated that for two days either so presume he has lost signal on his phone.
He will probably pop up in Greece anytime now. (y)

Let's hope!🤞

Tam did say he wanted to spend a few more days out of Shengen before crossing into Greece.
I guess they are just keeping their heads down for a while and have little mobile coverage.
I'm sure everything will get back on track soon.

Richard.

If you want to see rubbish everywhere try India I bet the Albanians are mere amateurs.
I have been watching a lot of YouTube stuff about Indian workers makeing stuff , anything from frying pans to lorry engines and Axel's , amazing what they can do with a bit of scrap iron, and all done on the floor among the scrap and stuff ,all with bare feet or bits of sandels among red hot molten metal.
Fantastic stuff all done with tools that we were using here in the fifties.
If you are interested in such stuff look it up, I can watch them for hours.
I'll see if I can get a link on.

Here's one, not the best by any means, but not going to hijack the thread so not going to put any more on here.
