Tam & co the great winter escape

Still not spoke to the guy yet as he's at work. Ill phone him later.

I spotted it 3 or 4 days ago , the weight baffles me as im pretty positive theres no way on earth its under 3.5t as mine weighed 3850 as a stripped out shell . Before i had all the steel welded In the rear end. I'm pretty sure this one is a 6 tonner.

Anyway that aside it looks in reasonable condition for a 33 year old van ...yep its a 1989. Hoping that it hasn't just been filled up with body filler and painted obviously but it looks good in the photos. The interior is not exactly how id build one but it has a few similarities id do.

Its got a few victron items in there . Looking at the mot history it hasnt failed one since 2012 and even then it was minor stuff. So it might be a good one

So i had thought it over for a few days and couldn't decide whether it was worth a bid or not ...i figured if i got it at 8 -8.5k i couldn't go far wrong. This has the original million mile engine, no ecu, no sensors no complicated mechanics or electrics. In 7 years it will be tax and mot exempt.

Haven't decided whether i would keep it and sell the motorhome eventually or if i would just buy it do a few modifications and flip it for a profit ... who knows I've not decided yet. But basically ive money in the bank getting me zero interest and ive also an unscratched itch when it comes to these big merc vans .

First step will be to speak to the guy and find out more about it ...then if im happy he isn't a tube ill sort out a flight to london next tuesday and collect it.

I was actually in the hospital visiting mum when i bid for it so she knows all about it and basically just said be sure i know what i want before i buy it lol

Well i never know what i want but im usually quite good at selling things on if they arent what i want.

Ill be going away this year with this van regardless ...if i go through with this purchase it will just be parked up over winter while im away. Mums happy enough with that too.

I may even just keep both vans for now and use both till i decide which i can live with. Who knows ...theres no rush to decide.

So ill know more once ive spoke to the seller.

Northernraider Tam if you have a itch it has to be scratched.
Yeah thats the problem. Truth be told i love the space in this current van , i love the power system etc but as yet ive no idea how ill get on with it over winter or on long term touring, whether ill find it hard to access places or too big etc .. so i won't know till im doing it how that will go.

Whilst the vario i had still required a lot of work doing to it that i would have struggled to do with everything else going on i still really love those vans and would like to have finished it etc ...i don't regret selling it as i think i did the right thing. But if i decide this van isn't what i want long-term then it leaves me back at square one. So if the one ive won on ebay is in as good order as it looks on the photos i may be able to find a compromise somewhere. But theres no panic with it as i have this one to live and travel in .

It’s hard to tell what the inside is like from the photos but the outside looks a beauty for 33 years old.
I think the paint job is only 1 or 2 years old so it might be covering untold sins. Or might not look as good up close. Its always hard to tell .but the pics look good . Aluminium checker plate along the bottom... something id considered doing myself on the vario. But again hoping it isnt hiding horrors. The inside is a little rough n ready but the basics are there so it could be fettled with to be functional for now with possibility of revamping later once i decide if it was a keeper or not. 188 k miles isnt bad for that age either and its the very uncomplicated engine and box in it so thats a bonus for ease of repair etc.

The guy obviously loved it as he has put work and money in to it so thats always a good thing.

Cant believe how much of a headache it is getting a flight from Edinburgh to London Heathrow. Train is 7 hours , flights go to stanstead or luton which is miles away unless i go ba and pay nearly £300 😱

I love the fellas description no messing just says it as it is and it sounds like a good Van.
l think you have landed yourself a bargain.

Ive had a wee chat with him and i think he sounds genuine enough. He seems to be gutted about selling it . It was painted December 2020 , says he had hoped it would make a lot more than that. Says that it was down as being 2900kg on logbook when he bought it and guy who sold it to him had ran it like that a few years. He's never had it weighed as it suits him as he has no c1 category. It aint right but as he says iys DVLA who've made the mistake not him.

Ill need to sort that out though as i don't want it plated at under 3.5t when its a 6 tonne van .

Other than that i think it looks ok

Just trying to sort how to go get it . He goes on holiday on Monday for 3 weeks .

So ideally i need to get it on sunday

He says he can collect me from stanstead as 40 minute drive so just trying to sort my sister out for a lift to Edinburgh for a 6am flight and for puppy sitting.

Are you committed to definitely buying it now? Even if you see the bodywork behind the paint is terrible when you get there?

It doesn’t look bad though from the photos?

Of course, he was the winning bidder and won the auction.

Have you messed sellers around after winning an auction or is it that you have never used an auction site and hence don’t understand how it works?

Tam did say first job will be speak to the seller to ensure he isn’t a tube then if he isn’t he would sort out a flight to London

Technically yes unless its significantly not as described. Under no legal obligation of course but its a standard auction thing.

It is a big (nervous?) commitment on something like that. 😬

Ian
It always is ...but ive learned to expect a few discrepancies. But in comparison to the 26.5k i payed for this van or commited to anyway before seeing it 7.8k isnt bad 🤣 but it still has to be as described or very close to it. Always difficult when its a distance but couldn't really pop to hounslow to check it over

So basically he’s not committed then if as I was saying if he gets there and the bodywork/van is absolutely Shite when it’s been described as good then it’s not as described.

Yes, but then the seller hasn’t fulfilled his obligations to properly describe the goods.

You bid, to buy. Only if the seller has misled you do you have grounds for rejection. You cannot bid on the basis of I’ll buy it if it looks ok when I get there.

From what Tam has said, in this case if the goods aren’t as described the seller would probably be happy enough if Tam rejected the van as the seller had hoped it would go for more and rejection would offer him the chance of getting more from it in another auction.

Which is exactly what I said, but in less words😄
I said if the bodywork was crap etc when he got there is he committed to buy, you came on and said he was, but he isn’t

Woke up to another ela surprise this morning 🤦‍♂️🤢🤢 i will spare you any photos but once again she managed to get nearly every feckin seat in the van and a big pile on the floor right where i need to stand to get out of bed.

And if it wasn't bad enough i had just washed 4 of the throws yesterday and planned to do the others today ...so now i have 7 throws to wash again and 4 cushion covers off the seats

I swear i could throttle that dog at times . Ive never seen so much shit come out one animal in my life

It’s all relative the description must match the item described but many other things are taken into consideration the biggest being the age, what would be expected a vehicle 33years old etc, additionally you do not reject an item you placed the winning bid on,it’s simply not on and not done, you have had every opportunity to check an item out before you bid, therefore, faults seen or unseen are down to you.
Furthermore as Tam as an example is a prolific bidder/buyer on EBay rejection would incur the Seller leaving him bad Feedback whereby this would damage his reputation and future bidding on an item he desperately wants to acquire would be rejected/cancelled by the Seller because of a damaged reputation.
