Tam & co the great winter escape

The main point being its no open 🤣
Nope ... but still interesting ... we'd been thing about doing it (well before CV hit!) but were put off by the 'risky' Bosnia bit, so by the time we get ourselves there it should be opened up ... unless they take longer than planned again.

Stopped outside split but it just looked like a massive city so kept going.
You’re right, it‘s huge, but there are lots of interesting and historic buildings to see. This is the main one. We visited for a few days after our charter 15 odd years ago.

p4n gives lots of places to stop but I would worry about security

Beautiful drive down the Adriatic coast but you have to get inland to appreciate the real Balkans. Don't forget the snow chains if you do go inland during the winter!

I can’t help but think the weather is playing a big part in your perception of Croatia

when we broke down September last year in the french alps (annecy) , we were there for 2 weeks
, it was amazing how the town changed , it was like someone flicked a switch , the two pictures were taken a week apart

Don't want to sidetrack the thread, but not knowing anything about these countries, what is the problem with this next one, what dangers or problems can arise? According to the map it just seems the road carrys on.

Wow, no street view, havnt even Google been there?

Agree with you about people not appearing too friendly in parts of Croatia, might just be a perception thing but having sailed round the islands from Dubrovnik we found them much happier and friendly. You’re not too far from Korcular an amazing mediaeval walled city. Don’t know how accessible it is by road but you may find people there are really nice, it’s twinned with the Isle of Rothesay. 😃

Some parts are covered by Street view. Like Germany huge areas not covered. Might be something to do with security or privacy laws. Who knows?

I think she's planning to do the same ...she just wants to push on too.

Will have to buy insurance at border for Montenegro but then i planned to spend a few days there anyway
Wont your green card insurance cover Montenegro? Your trips interesting as we are considering heading that way to extend our winter travels should Morocco stay closed to Tourist from Spain, there is a ferry service from Sete France to Morocco but I do not know if Motorhomes will be able to use it. Another deterrent is the cost!

Virtually impossible to get cover from UK insurers.

I believe some of the Balkan countries, Bosnia / Montenegro are excluded from UK motor policies so you have to buy third party cover at the border or elsewhere. That's ok for some, but if you have a 120k palace it probably focuses your attention on what might happen.
I don't think there is any particular risk with these countries, just not in the Lloyd's insurance boys club.
I think Tam's planning on just wizzing through and back into Croatia

Well i spent less time in Bosnia than i did in benedorm so thats a new record ...7 minutes 22 seconds it takes to drive across bosnia ...no one in the bosnian booths ...i got scanned out of croatia and then stamped back in ....both Bosnia booths were unmanned

Didn't hang about did yer.
Were there many vehicles on the road?
I thought you had to get 3rd party insurance at the border, I take it you just risked it uninsured.
For the sake of 7 minutes i just risked it.
Will have to buy cover for Montenegro though but not sure where you get that

When we first went to Croatia, many years ago, our satnav just stopped at the border (with Slovenia). We had to wing it from there on.

We were going for an orienteering competition and had a bit of a problem explaining what that was at the border 😂. However, once there, we were treated (treat/tret) to almost celeb status, cos we were almost the only foreigners that had got there (we later met some Danes that made it also).

We didn't see an awful lot of the country but we did have a couple of nights (free) overnighting near the former hunting lodge of Tito. Lovely spot and only accessible to us cos we were with the locals (there were bears in the area cos their prints were seen next to our last checkpoint 😨)

We did have a race on the coast, somewhere, and had to bunny hop over sunbathers on a concrete path above the sea.

It didn't give us any urge to go back, although I'm sure there are some lovely places to visit.

Parked up overlooking Dubrovnik now ...i have to say yhe scenery etc is much nicer south of bosnia ...stopped at a roadside war memorial just after the border 2 graves there of two 21 year old lads killed in 1992 ... seems to be just before the war broke out.

Stunning view of the old town from up here ...will go in to town in Jackie's van tomorrow as nowhere near the town to park mine. Nice field of friendly donkeys right near by ...ive petted all 10 of them 😁....i want a donkey!!!

That's interesting, I'd heard that before I first went to Croatia but I never found that to be the case.
I always found them quite friendly and engaging for the most part 🤷‍♂️
On one evening I went in a bar full of locals and it was like being in an Irish bar with lots of banter.
Ditto from us too
