Tam & co the great winter escape

When is the rattle most noticable
On tickover when stationary ?
I'll have a listen to mine later, but never noticed any rattle apart from general engine noise
On tickover yeah and when driving. Press the clutch it goes away , release the clutch it comes back.

Mine sometimes rattles when idling but dip the clutch and it goes away .

Yes it does BUT the release bearing hss just been changed 🤷‍♂️
I remember in the dim and distant past (1970's lol) doing a clutch replacement on a Vauxhall Viva for someone and getting that exact noise when I drove the car back to him.
Can't remember if it was a duff bearing or just not fitted properly but it was the release bearing.

Yep and the old release bearing on this was completely knackered. But the style of clutch on this means the release bearing just pops in to the pressure plate then locks. It cant be removed again . But it isnt a snug fit and it does have a little sideways movement...and its metal on metal. So the vibration of the engine means it vibrates on the shaft against the edges of the plate. Its a pull clutch so until the pedal is pressed its free to vibrate and its amplified because of the bell housing. Its annoying because once you hear it you cant unhear it . But theres nothing left there to replace

They did put a DUCATO clutch in it and not a DUCATI clutch?

Sorry Tam, bad humour I know but only the motorcycling fraternity will know what I’m talking about!
I hope it all beds in and comes good! Could the release bearing be faulty? I would have thought the mech would have noticed it if it sounded dry!

How the scooter, not heard anything about that.
Just been fettling with that this morning. It needed a few bits tightened up here and there and I'll need a new indicator lens for it at some point .

Went online to get insurance quotes for it this morning which is ridiculous.. insurance value it at £500 . The cheapest insurance quote was £106 ...with £350 excess in the event of a claim .

Its a joke.

So i may have to phone up a few places

Do you have cover on the MH policy for Third Party risk whilst driving another vehicle? Or could you get it for a small additional premium.

If so you would be road legal and then on those figures you could self insure for damage or loss.

Alternatively coudl you just add the scooter as a second vehicle to your existing policy, on the basis that you are the named driver and cannot be driving both at once.

You may have already tried these routes.

I have cover for driving other vehicles not owned by me don't ever remember it being any different.

Unfortunately doesn't cover vehicles owned by me and one type of vehicle ie car often will not cover other type of vehicle.

Im not to fussed about the price its the excess should anything happen to it that annoys me. The price of the policy and the excess is more than they state the scooter is worth ... which is also less than i paid for it so basically other than being legal to ride i get absolutely no benefit from being insured whatsoever

Dont they insure you against third party risk , hit a Bentley on your scoot and you will soon realise the benefit :)

& that is the problem. The one in the Alfa snapped in & clamped like a limpet but is still"loose" on the fingers. As I said before we attached his before we assembled anything & managed to remove it again, Then attached it to the arm on the bellhousing then it locked in to place when the box was loacated. .
His old one was the original & caused the fault as some of the fingers collapsed leaving some attached & others not. Then again it took 17 years & 250,000kms before it fell out of bed.
** Warning never offer to assist on any clutch replacment on an alfa, even if offered large sums of money. Run 5 miles as a mile isn't enough . Absolute nightmare of a job the amount that has to come off including the lower subframe, exhaust, etc, etc, etc, etc, . In fact even thinking of it now is going to give me nightmares.:Eeek:

After 2 years I don't notice it now + you can only hear it outside.

You could of course, if you really wanted, use an endoscope to have a look around inside & when it is running to actually see whatthe release bearing is doing?

PS Glad to hear all is sorted & hopefully onwards & upwards.

The most likely cause of your noise is within the box.
With the van at a standstill and no gear engaged, with the clutch engaged (pedal up) the first motion shaft is turning, which is permanently coupled to the layshaft, when the clutch is dis engaged (pedal down) the drive to the first motion shaft is removed which stops the turning within the gearbox, only when you select a gear and engage the clutch will all three shafts turn and drive the van.
The input shaft (first motion) and layshaft are permanently coupled, the output shaft (third motion) is only connected to the layshaft by gear selection.

That’s a very good explanation, so therefore could it possibly be a bearing on one of these shafts?

Its coming from within the bellhousing rather than from inside the box. I think its just the release bearing vibrating

Many thanks to travlinman for giving me this table and brackets. Its truly changed my life 🤣

Much better for my lounge. I just need to order up the foam cushions now so i can use it as a bed if i want to but moreso just a big chill out sofa to lounge on with the dogs.

That's handy, useful but doesn't get in the way, unless you want it to!
Aye and its quick release so you can remove it altogether. There were 2 spare brackets so i could use it at the front area too if i wanted to .
