Tam & co the great winter escape

I think im going to have to take milo to the vet ☹️

The other day when we were out walking he had this very strange ...shall we call it "episode" ...they had been running around chasing etc and suddenly it was like he couldn't work his back legs . He kept collapsing and was trying to lift one back leg then the other but kept falling over. I picked him up and he was breathing really heavy , panting , disorientated, chest heaving and just bery panicky.. i had to carry him most of the way home. At one point i put him down to try him and he was fine after that.

So i figured it may have been a one off but thought id just see how things went.

Well this afternoon a similar thing happened..only this time it was his front legs , but again his heart was pounding and he was very heavy breathing ...pushing himself in to me and really trembling. After about 5 minutes he settled down then tried to jump down and again his back legs were really wobbly. Had to sit him down another 5 minutes before he was ok to walk back to the car . He didn't wee himself or anything and im sure it wasnt a fit.

But im worried hes having mini strokes or siezures or maybe has heart problems.

I will have to try the vets tomorrow and see if they will check him over.

He seems fine afterwards but its quite scary at the time . He is only 3.5 years old and he is fit ...not overweight etc . So not sure whats going on
I hope it’s nothing serious.

I hope it’s nothing serious.
It might be nothing ...but now its happened twice im a little worried. Ill phone the vet in the morning and see if they think i should take him in. Problem is he's entirely fine the rest of the time.

They might fit him with a heart monitor like my girl Jack.
She had a period of collapsing unconscious for about a minute when she was under a year old they couldn’t find anything and then about 3 years ago when she was 12 it came back and they could still not find anything despite the monitoring and seeing a specialist.
Strange but very worrying.

Good luck.

Hope they can get to the bottom of it & it is nothing serious.

How hot is it with you Tam? Could it be a heat stroke? Sounds similar to what my old Beardie had out here (it wasn't exceptilnally .hot at the time).
Definitely calls for a check with the vet though

Poor little Milo, I hope it is nothing serious but certainly is not right for such a fit healthy little dog. Their injections are all up to date, I hope.
Fingers crossed for the mittle guy. 🤞❤❤

I woud not be waiting til tomorrow though, but it maybe already too late for the vets surgery, but at this stage it needs to be sooner rather than later.

He's only had rabies and dhppi injections ..but thats all that was ever recommended .

Im working tonight and vet closed anyway. Its not an emergency as he's absolutely fine. Both episodes have been after he's been running around. He'll be curled up sleeping with jade right now

So sorry I cannot give you any advice Tam, just hoping Milo is ok and it isn't anything serious.

Sounds similar to what our Kizzie (aka Piggy) RIP had many years ago, it was down to the activity causing her heart to work hard and not enough blood was getting through so she'd keel over similarly to what Milo's doing, then after a few minutes would usually be find again so long as she didn't start romping around immediately once more. Once on meds she was fine but make sure you mention it to the vet as our vet at the time hadn't got a clue so we changed to another who knew immediately what the issue was thank goodness.

Who would have bloody dugs!!!

I came home to this tonight.

Every single seat , the cab floor mat and the rear floor

Honestly ...dogs have no sense
Have 4 kids and the usual sickness runs etc and nothing prepared me for a crate full of puppy runs, only thing stopping me from baffing was a pf4 mask handy!

No reason to it.....

Fed her meat and rice and fine day later....

So have you taken him to the vet? Even though there is nothing you can see outwardly he could be having blood tests to check for any incubating problems or diseases.
If he were a child his gardians would not be saying " he seems ok today, we will leave it til he has another episode".

Tam Northernraider knows Milo better than any of us and I believe has his best interests at heart.
I Don't think he deserves a lecture from any of us on how to look after his living companions.
I am sure Tam can speak for himself. Val 3 dogs has been very supportive of Tam and his dogs for several years sharing her expertise and wisdom.

Right for those with patience ...milo was at the vets this morning. He confirmed what i already knew that milo has a slight heart murmer. But other than that he seems in good health. He asked if he was sluggish etc on walks which he isnt. He's always raring to go , but he does pant and get himself stressed pulling at times and when hes been chasing other dogs.

He's given me heart tablets for him to try for 20 days ...and see how he is

Problem with that is ...hes fine most of the time anyway so how the tablets are going to tell me anything im not sure🤷‍♂️

And for those with the impatient judgement posts give me a break ...it might be easy to get non emergency appointments at the drop of a hat where you live but here you need to wait unless its an emergency which it wasn't.

That's all i know at the minute

Good on You Tam! I am glad he has seen the vet and I am very glad that he has shown no further signs of having problems at present.
I assume that I am probably the "impatient" one you speak of, I make no apologies, his "symptoms" appeared to come out of nowhere.were quite dramatic and unexpected , my immeadiate reaction, as someone who has kept and worked wirh multiple dogs for a lot of the last 68 years would still be that he needed to see a vet promptly.
Learning he has a heart murmur comes as somewhat of a relief to me: My late Mother had a heart murmur and contined living an active life for 86 years.
I owned and successfully competed in International Endurance Races (100 miles in 24 hours) on my Arab Stallion, he was diagnosed with a heart murmur at the age of six but continued to meet all the required veterinary parameters and win races til the age of 12, at which age I retired him and for the next 12 years he lived happily at home siring foals.
I believe at that time a number of top athletes had heart murmurs.
I am delighted for the present and hopefully forseeable future Milo is well.

My eldest Ridgeback was diagnosed with a heart murmur when he was a couple of years old, I was pretty devastated as part of choosing the breed was their endurance. I cant remember the reason for that visit, I'd seen no signs of anything up with him. I took the next few weeks carefully, but still there were no signs, so I took him out running, 6 - 8 miles 2 or 3 times a week, then in winter we would go out in the dark with my mountain bike and some serious lights. He was fine. When he was about 7 or 8 at another vets visit the different vet said there was no sign of a heart murmur. Was there ever one? Do vets just like to scare us? We'll never know, cancer took him 2 years ago at 11 years old.

I was born with a heart murmur. It's never held me back. Running, climbing, hill walking, biking and still now, at 66, (if I could stay on my bike and not fall off and break bones 😂) I'm still riding or hiking almost daily.

Just keep an eye on Milo, Tam. He can't tell you if he feels "off".

Yeah the problem is ive known for a few years that he had a heart murmur ...its never bothered him or me until he took those two funny turns. Now im constantly paranoid and worried hes overdoing it. Dogs will just plod on and try to please ... he's always on the go and he loves a good chase and a bark at other dogs. Now i feel im constantly watching him and how much hes panting etc ... Im confused as to how these tablets will prove anything either way and im worried in case he needs them for the rest of his life

But my point was, I believed the first vet, but now have my doubts. Getting him checked was the right thing to do for sure. I guess you have to let him carry on like a mad man/dog and see if there any recurrences on the meds.
