Tam & co the great winter escape

If the fitter has fitted that heavy box back on his own he my well have bent the fingers on the pressure plate with the first motion shaft of the gearbox .... is the bearing still in the end of the crank I wonder

One things for sure, judging by all the various experiences posted here, its not a straightforward fix/replace/repair.

Good luck going forward

The judder in reverse is definitely new never had it before and neither did my hymer. This actually judders a bit in first now too. The thrust bearing noise is stil there too and i definitely never had that on the hymer. When its idling its really quiet but if you press clutch and release again it starts rattling like an old clapped oot heap ..keep foot down on clutch and its back to a very quiet runner.

Its not right thats for sure. Don't know what's wrong but something is.

Got the scooter rack fitted on but had to do a bit of fettling to get the upright bar on that holds the seat brace. My bumper fouls it if trying to put it on the right way so im hoping this way works.

I hope the garage don't say it was alright when it left here after we tested it.

For what it's worth, our last van was a 2010 2.3 litre (130hp) Fiat-based coachbuilt with manual gearbox. We had it brand new, and the blinking clutch had an unpleasant judder when pulling away in first gear. Worried the life out of me - whatever I tried, I couldn't start off smoothly.

However, when the van had done about 1,000-1,500 miles, I realised the judder had completely disappeared. And from then on, for the five years we owned it, the clutch was one of the smoothest I've known. So whether it was just bedding in, or had been standing and some rust had built up on the clutch plate, I've no idea? But, thankfully for me, it turned out to be a non-issue.

Hope you can get your van sorted Tam, without too much more grief and stress...

That won't wash . Ill be phoning them on monday morning first thing to tell them how it was on the drive home.

I will see if anything changes tomorrow when i go to pick up scooter.. who knows maybe it will bed in ..but i can't see the rattle going and that was the reason i wanted it changed in the first place 🤦‍♂️

It is a bit more complcated to fit & if doing it on the floor , as we did, having 2 people to align it makes a difference.I can't remember on the alfa pull clutch but on my 2007 transit the fisrt motion shaft does not sit in the end of the crankshaft anymore. I checked when it was out the other week & I'm sure it doesn't but when it comes out again tuesday I will check again.

With the alfa pull clutch, & having never seen/done one before, we actually attached the release mechanism to the pressure plate to see how it worked before attaching it to the release arm. It certainly grips the fingers of the plate & was difficult to remove again. Once attached to the gearbox release arm it attached quite easily & with a pronounced clunk as the release bearing clipped on the fingers. 2 people make the difference.

With these once the release bearing is attached to the pressure plate it can't be removed. The gearbox can't be removed without either popping the pin out of the fork or by removing the bolts for the pressure plate through the inspection hatch and taking the box, pressure plate and clutch plate off in one.

Not sure of the reassembly but it is an awkward bugger to remove. Theres a few YouTube videos showing it.

If you dont have the specific fiat pin removal tool its either drill a hole in the box or unbolt the pressure plate through the hatch.

Can that upright bolt to the outside where you can see the bolt heads.

Maybe the judder is due to clutch basket not being bolted down flat.

There must be someone on here who, in the past has had a clutch fitted to this year of engine with some success first time and can recommend somewhere for it to be seen to properly if the original garage can’t get it up to scratch??

Well ive brought the van home but its not right. It wont go over 40 in 4th gear and struggle to get 60mph in 5th . And reverse is unbearable it just judders like hell. Not to mention it still bites near the top and there is still a rattle.

Basically its worse than it was when it went in .

And im just really pissed off.

I will have to phone them on monday and see what they want to do. Ive lost the will to live.
I hate seeing you so pissed off . It’s a good van and a solid engine. You will get this resolved soon 👍🏻

Did you get the scooter, was the trip ok?
I picked it up yeah.

Not sure about the van , it seemed to get better when driven , it was a bit juddery in first gear to start with but that seemed to smooth out a bit .. doesn't apear to be slipping and now biting about half way ...but its still very rattly and the Noise definitely seems to come from within the gearbox . Still a little judery in reverse but again doesn't seem as bad so maybe its bedding in or something.

I still think its noisy though ..

Could you get it over 40 mph ?
Yeah but it went over 40 the other day too , it won't win any performance trophies though thats for sure.

If you take it over 40 in 4th gear the EML flashes on then off again , it does the same at 60 in 5th ...it comes on then goes straight off again ...it will go to 65 /70 at a push.

Not sure what's causing the EML light , it may or may not be the infamous injector plug wires. Or it could be something else.

Ill wait till i take it back in on Tuesday for the cambelt and ill speak to him about the rattling as i was sure that was the thrust release bearing as it goes away when the clutch is pressed and held down but rattles when released.

Its annoying

Did the scooter rack work out ok
Aye but the upright bar wasn't right. Im gonna make my own one tomorrow as the scooter was leaning too far off the back. I have a length of 40x40 box section here anyway
