Tam & co the great winter escape

I don't have a TV so haven't seen tbese various trainers but I think £875 for a 'session' is a solutely ridiculous!
These people have presumably dealt with hundreds of dogs and hopefully will have their timing/handling skills down to a very fine art.
Even if they appear to work miracles in "a session" and hand a halo wearing pooch back to you, the newly learned lessons take time to become confirmed and habitual.
Habits and behaviours take time to be established, this applies to the owners also and tbey frequently need more than one session to undo their bad habits!
What tbe proffesional trainer has achieved will only last a life time if the behaviours he has taught are correctly and consistently repeated on a daily basis.
The problem usually does not lie with the animal but with the humans that have regular dealings with it.

Have all you dog lovers ever stopped to think , all this training, is just to stop a dog doing what it wants to do just to make it do what you want , how is that being kind to dogs?

A lot of these dog behaviours may well be down to anxiety. If training solves these problems then that's good for dog and owner.

Chaser, from what you have said on here in the past, you have kept "working dogs" because you have needed them to make your life easier (on the farm).
If us dog lovers let our dogs do what tbey wanted, (as they are naturally carnivorous, predatory animals) and didn't train them there would be so many more cases of "sheep worrying", and traffic accidents caused by dogs chasing cars (a thwarted herding instinct), humans being bitten by dogs being territorial and resource guarding.
It is because we love our dogs we act responsibly and do train them to the best of our ability that those of us that wish to are able to get so much pleasure from sharing our lives and our homes with happy, healthy dogs.

Charlie if you weren't trained by your parents and school and just left to do what you wanted . You'd not have survived long.

Well indoors ela is doing great. Comes every time when i call her tail wagging and enthusiastic, i can even get her to sit.

But when in the garden she's still not there yet.

Spoke finally with a trainer today, was quite interesting , she doesn't like the slip leads, they only do reward based training. A 2 hour 1 on 1 session with them is £80 which isn't too bad.

She's going to email me details later to look over.

Have we started on the Vario yet? You will be using the Iveco next winter if you don’t get a shufty on😁😁

I am glad that at least one of the trainers has been in touch with you Tam but I am wary of 'positive only' based training.
I believe that in all spheres one needs balance.
One can get a dog or a child or almost any sentient being to do as requested with the offer of a reward but what happens when something tbat has higher value to tbe dog shows up?
All animals (of whatever species) need balanced training. I believe one has to be able to say ""no, do not chase that cat/squirrel across the road".
The dog probably thinks it is a lot more exciting than that bit of treat you have on offer.
Correction does not mean you are going to thrash the dog, it can be conveyed in tbe tone of voice.
It could be difficult to explain to Ela that it would be better not to dig a hole in Mum's garden by offering her treats.
Balance ce in all things is necessary.

80 quid is good. I once paid 70 quid for about 25mins.

Probably either by bribing it by having a treat in your left hand just above the dog's nose,, or by clicker training, which works extremely well with dogs and I believe porpoises (or it may be dolphins).Whenever the dog happens to be in the desired position or offering the desired behaviour one marks the moment with a 'click' or a "yes!' and offers a treat or a quick game with a ball or toy.
When the dog is pulling on tbe lead you do a swift change of direction.
If your timing is not spot on and your 'yes! or click is a few seconds too late you may be marking tbe wrong behaviour and there- by encouraging the dig to do sometbing you didn't want.

The changing direction does work mostly ...but i never get anywhere and jade and Milo have no idea what's going on 🤣

Sheep/ cow dogs do what they do because they do it on their own persuasion, not because someone has to persuade them, I have had many a Collie and they are almost telepathic in what to do right from a pup, ok you just have to give them a bit of guidence but mostly they are doing what they want to do.
And the same applies to hunting or pointers or whatever dog you have but to make them in to subservient pets is just against their very nature just to serve a humans will to have something to control for whatever reason.

I discovered this guy today as all this dog talk has got me fired up to try to stop Roly pulling. He's down to earth and I find him easy to listen to. The reason I've linked the video is how he smoothly morphs from his big guy voice to a high falsetto when praising the dog :LOL:

The constant change of direction with this method makes me go dizzy 🥴
