Tam & co the great winter escape

I hear what you saying but, none of our dogs were 'kept in solitary confinement' as there was 3 of them all in the same area and all ran, untethered, together on the farm during the day and, with 6 kids around, got more than their share of 'fuss'.

It is interesting to note, even today, when one is watching '3men and a dog' the shepherd is rarely seen making a lot of fuss of his/her dog yet, despite that lack of displayed emotion, one know the dogs are loved!
I am pleased to hear that your dogs had a better life than many. I knew numerous that were kept chaIned apart from tbe time they were required to bring the cows in and out for milking and often then cursed or kicked for being too excitable /fast around tbe cattle.
Even on "one man and his dog" and at actual sheep dog trials one can still see dogs with terribly matted coats with great clags hanging off tbem.

It must be a "stiff upper lip" British thing.
For the last week or so I have been watching the Iditerod, 1049 mile sled race across Alaska.
The Mushers, mostly men, take great care of there dogs. They all talk of the trust and relationship they have with each of tbeir individual.
As they struggle onward in atrocious conditions they are talking to their dogs all the while and encouraging.them.
When they finally cross the finishing line after 8 or 9 days the first thing they do is go forward to tbe team and caress, hug and thank them. before feeding them and making tbem comfortable for well earned rest.
They certainly have and show great affection for tbeir dogs, why wouldn't they? in those conditions their lives depend on them.

I do wonder why folk are complaining about the doggy talk . The travel thread is finished ...im home.

When i start work on the vario again i will create a thread for that like i did last year.

If folk weren't commenting on this one it
would just die off.

Anyway that big traitor ela has been all over my brother today like a rash , jumping up on his knee giving him cuddles etc , following him around , and still going hot and cold with me like i regularly beat her up.

And mum is doing my head in with her crabbing.

Last week all i got was she was looking forward to seeing the dogs and me ....now she just complains about everything. My sister has lost the head with her too , said to me the other day that she's just negative about everything. I thought she was exaggerating but unfortunately not. It seem the only joy she has right now is complaining and picking fault with everything. And the favouritism with the dogs is getting worse, milo can do no wrong in her eyes , but she's as much as given up with ela. Because she won't do as shes told.

Tam, what a shame but try not to get at odds with your Mum.
I don't want t to lecture you and I'm sure you love her dearly but you have turned her world upside down in the last few days.
She has grown accustomed to having her pristine house to herself. Now she has you lot!
Be patient and tolerant with your Mum, it will be good practise for you with Ela 😁

My mum would have told me to Fiddlesticks off on day one :giggler: she was sooo house proud, first dog piss and we would have been out (y)

Funny thing is my mum died suddenly, and I had to take on her dog. He wipes his arse on my carpets all the time. Vet says I am stuck with it as small dogs can't always fully empty their bowels naturally :oops2: WTF

I wasn’t complaining about dog talk just trying to lighten up the mood a bit

must be hard to deal with someone like that , don’t take to heart , I think we all get less tolerant as we get older , give her a cuddle & tell her to behave lol 💕 , just like she did to you when you were a child

Dogs are very much like humans, they have emotional issues just like us and like certain things and dislike others….

Have you thought that Ella just doesn’t like you….?

Could be why some people say that they rescued a dog because the original owner couldn’t cope with the dog but it is perfectly ok with them, perhaps the dog didn’t like the original owner but gets on with the new owners… I’ve grown up with dogs and have seen that they favour certain members of a family and not necessarily the one that feeds it.

Serious question…. In no way Am I doubting your commitment Tam.

I don't think he meant bowels, probably anal glands, you'll have to learn how to squeeze them, once you've got the knack (NOT the knackers!) it's fairly straightforward and doesn't need doing more than once a month.

Remind me to never get a dog…..😎😆

Adding to the above, I think a lot of the issue is caused by feeding small dogs the 'special' much softer food such as Caesar etc with no or very little mixer biscuits so less roughage to put pressure on the glands whilst pooing, a good combination of both types of food is needed. This also helps to keep their teeth in better condition too as the biscuits clean as they chomp them.

One thing that makes me feel better is everytime i take the dogs tk the park i notice theres not one single dog there that is perfectly trained , every owner has issues.

But I've heard " you have your hands full there once ive heard it a million times now "
:LOL: since when have you started caring about what other people say.;)

Its an age thing I am afraid. Try not to take it personally. My Dad was similar. His dog could do no wrong but he moaned about our dog all the time when we went to see him and out dog is so well behaved we can't believe it.

I think its difficult for older people to see things the same way us middle aged youngsters do.

Can you remember Mrs Pomphreys name for this strange thing that dogs do to relieve their blocked anal glands? (All Creatures great and small)

Flotbot

Well after 2 days of enclosed but larger space , im still getting nowhere with ela's recall. If anything its actually worse , sge simply will not come. In fact she will do anything other than come , she will try to get further away , will try to get behind furniture etc to hide and behaves like i was in the habit of hitting her , cowering, backing away etc ...which to be honest bloody hurts as ive done nothing but spoil that dog since i got her. If i take her in to the back garden or the house and she isnt on a lead its almost impossible to get her back on a lead or to get her to come out the house etc. The only way is if i just go out and she will eventually follow ...which of course meanss mum has to then get up and follow closing all the doors. Doesn't matter how much i try to coax her with treats etc she won't come. And when you try to get hold of her she panics and bolts ..so we've already had a broken ornament and an oil burner knocked over and wax sent splashing everywhere ☹️ I know its early days and she might be strange with the house and the caravan etc but already its causing stress and mum's not what id call enthusiastic. Im at a loss

Im currently trying to find a local trainer/ behaviourist to speak with them and see if they have any ideas. Its difficult when there is 3 of them and although jade and milo are not the best trained dogs they do come when called and even more so if food involved.

It might well be a case that she is going to need someone without other dogs that can give her 1 on 1 .

Its something i might have to come to terms with , because it isn't fair to jade or milo for their lives to be changed dramatically either if i can't sort ela out ...and its already going that way.

She's a lovely dog , she has a great temperament and a lovely nature , she's loving and non destructive etc ....in every other way id say she was perfect . But the recall is non existent.

I will see how the next few days goes and also trying to find a trainer to see if they have any ideas or recommendations
But if i have no luck i may have to find her a new owner , which will break my heart

I don't expect everyone to support and agree but honestly anyone that starts telling me i shouldn't have taken her off that beach etc ...i don't want to hear it.

I did what i believe was best for her , ive given her a home , fed her , made sure she has all her vaccinations etc etc , im trying my best so i don't need anyone saying she would have been better off left there.

I will do what i believe to be best for HER and if that means having to let her go to someone who can give her all their attention then that's what i will do.
I would prefer not to and to get help with training her but if that doesn't work i don't know what alternatives there are.
A professional dog trainer will get there Tam, I did grow up with police dog training, and it is amazing what can be done! Keep persevering it will be worth it in the end. Good on you for your efforts👍

Strewth, I knew some parents have weird ideas as to how to raise their kids but using PDT techniques is a bit OTT ... do you still bite the arms of strangers? 😄

Thanks Minxy. Vet didn't talk to me about food, just asked what I fed him on. He has dry food (James wellbeloved) You have raised my interest and I have been reading up online. Seems he needs more fibre in his diet, the article even mentioned giving him probiotics or Chia seeds. His scooting is nowhere near as bad as it was when he first came to us though.

Had a little success today with calling mou mou instead of saying ela come.

She's come rushing to me that way in the house at least 5 or 6 times.

Not as much success in the garden though but will persevere. She's been happier today.
And mum hasn't been such a pita today either but then i did take her to asda ...and Gerry's love a trip round the shops 😁

On anothe note theres still a problem getting calor bottles here it seems and those who do have them are crazy prices , so i took the van to Morrisons in Kirkcaldy and filled up my LPG bottle and have now removed it out the van to use in the caravan for now.

While at Morrisons there were 2 auld guys in a fairly new bailey autograph trying to fill LPG. They were there for ages holding everyone up while they tried connect and disconnecting the hose several times. In the end i got out the van to go see if they needed help. They were trying to fill an ordinary calor bottle inside the locker with one of those bayonet adaptor things off ebay. Every time he disconnected the hose there was gas spraying out everywhere. I told him that he shouldn't be using one of those and especially not inside a locker at which point his mate piped up saying i just filled 2 without problems. The difference being his were empty while this fellas was half full so everytime he opened the valve the pump was not going to work.

I basically told him he was an accident waiting to happen and if he could afford a nearly new motorhome surely he could pay £200 for a refillable kit of ebay.

Needless to say he wasn't happy but i left him to it ,used the other side of the pump that i had to reverse in to and then when i went in to pay i told the cashier he was filling a non refillable bottle.

Morrisons is the only LPG station around here for miles and idiots like that are going to cause problems.
