Tam & co the great winter escape

After reading this thread on using different names to call out to get your dog to come to you, Steve was calling out to Jack to come inside from the garden. Anyway, as he sometimes does, Jack ignored him so I went to the door and shouted "screwdriver" and he came flying in :ROFLMAO: (Jack, not Steve)

Thanks Minxy. Vet didn't talk to me about food, just asked what I fed him on. He has dry food (James wellbeloved) You have raised my interest and I have been reading up online. Seems he needs more fibre in his diet, the article even mentioned giving him probiotics or Chia seeds. His scooting is nowhere near as bad as it was when he first came to us though.
We were advised by a French vet a good few years ago to give Lily some bran to help her 'glands' issue which in addition to not emptying fully we're constantly infected - at the time it was so bad we were serious considering having them removed. We just fed her normal human bran flakes and it worked an absolute treat, withing a week she was much happier and hasn't had any infections since, just the odd squeeze every now and then keeps her in good form.

We're currently parked next to a German motorhomes and his 2 boy dogs, lovely things but of course they don't understand English, however both of them fully understand that when I make a hard "a, a, a" noise it means stop what they are doing! 😄

I was just going to ask you if All Bran or Bran flakes can be eaten by dogs. Bran flakes for breakfast tomorrow Jack (y)

We just get the cheapo supermarket ones, Lily will eat just about anything and isn't brand conscious.😄

Perhaps they think you need help Mel :giggle:

Had a little success today with calling mou mou instead of saying ela come.

She's come rushing to me that way in the house at least 5 or 6 times.

Not as much success in the garden though but will persevere. She's been happier today.
And mum hasn't been such a pita today either but then i did take her to asda ...and Gerry's love a trip round the shops 😁

On anothe note theres still a problem getting calor bottles here it seems and those who do have them are crazy prices , so i took the van to Morrisons in Kirkcaldy and filled up my LPG bottle and have now removed it out the van to use in the caravan for now.

While at Morrisons there were 2 auld guys in a fairly new bailey autograph trying to fill LPG. They were there for ages holding everyone up while they tried connect and disconnecting the hose several times. In the end i got out the van to go see if they needed help. They were trying to fill an ordinary calor bottle inside the locker with one of those bayonet adaptor things off ebay. Every time he disconnected the hose there was gas spraying out everywhere. I told him that he shouldn't be using one of those and especially not inside a locker at which point his mate piped up saying i just filled 2 without problems. The difference being his were empty while this fellas was half full so everytime he opened the valve the pump was not going to work.

I basically told him he was an accident waiting to happen and if he could afford a nearly new motorhome surely he could pay £200 for a refillable kit of ebay.

Needless to say he wasn't happy but i left him to it ,used the other side of the pump that i had to reverse in to and then when i went in to pay i told the cashier he was filling a non refillable bottle.

Morrisons is the only LPG station around here for miles and idiots like that are going to cause problems.
I’m glad Ela is doing better today. I thought of you at dog training tonight. The trainer shouted, ‘Yoshi, come’ and he ignored her. She said have you not taught him to come to you 🙄 I said yes, but I say ‘Yoshi, here’ so she tried that and he came straight to her! She just wasn’t talking to him in language he understood!

Tam, gkad you had success with Mou mou in tbe house today but then you spoiled it by moving her to a different area with different smells and distractions.
Did you have her on tbe lead or did you confirm to her that she can choose whether or not she wishes ti respond?
You need to work in the same area until the correct behaviour is working 100% for 3 or 4 days. Then you could move to tbe garden.
Everything needs to be done in tiny steps otherwise you are confirming tbat she can please herself.

I didn't move her to another area ...but she has to go out to the toilet 🤷‍♂️

Only had a lead on today for walkies the rest of the time shes been very good , coming in and out the caravan and the house herself which is a big improvement.

How much bran flakes did you give Lily Minxy, Jack weighs 15kgs

I am told 'puppy puppy puppy' is a universal good call.

Try saying that and sounding scary. Almost impossible.

Lily's about 7kg and we give her a handful of flakes. Even though the others don't have the same severe issue Lily had we still give them some as it keeps their systems in good order and reduces the risk of problems developing with them so Tazzy at about 7kg has half a handful and Minky just a few flakes as she's only 3kg.

Thanks, will try just a handful at first with Jack. Some sites say start low then increase but don't say how much to start or continue with (y)

I don't think much of the slip lead , she seems to pull more on that than she does on the short lead attached to her collar.

Have you got it positioned correctly? It should be high on her neck, just behind her ears and with no pressure on it except a very brief tug and release when you are correcting her.
If it is lower down her neck or she is allowed a steady pull on it she will overide the discomfort and possibly damage her windpipe.
It would pay dividends to visit a professional Tam as timing and handling are crucial.

Yoshi was the same on a slip lead, and also a half check collar. I tried using the slip lead as a figure of 8 headcollar and he walks really nicely. I mainly use a figure of 8 headcollar on him and I‘m also training him on loose lead walking with the use of food and toys. I think it’s trial and error because what works with one dog doesn’t work with another.

I think so , but she's not making any choking noises or anything so i don't think its doing any harm. But she pulled less with normal lead and collar just giving a tug and a chhhhh.

Ive left answer fone messages with 3 professionals none have returned my calls and it always just goes to answer phone

This is the website of daughter’s best friend, lovely lady and would do zoom type chat as she lives in Cornwall.
We met up on Sunday on the busy beach at Exmouth and she said Rosie is behaving beyond her age so I was a proud puppy Mum.
So glad that I have a vet daughter to do the anal gland checking/emptying thing!

Hmm! I am sorry to hear that Tam, it's a bummer and not at a professional! way of behaving or running a business!
No but it seems the way of businesses nowadays .. you've to keep chasing them which is annoying.

Isnt this turning into the norm these days, you have to beg them to come and then they want £1000 a day or something ridiculous. Why is it that a “Grand” appears to be spoken of as being next to nothing. I remember being on a £1000.00 a year with a Company Car,Telephone paid, and expenses and thought l’d arrived, a wife and two children and mortgage to boot.

l know this doesn’t help you Tam but l share your frustration.

4 people ive had arrange to view the iveco today and none turned up. 2 of which i messaged about 20 minutes before they were due to check they were still coming .one didn't reply the other confirmed ....neither turned up.

And then i also had 2 others phone , one from northern Ireland one from Basingstoke. Both asked lots of questions , haggled a price over the phone , agreed a deposit which they claimed would be paid within half hour and then never heard from them again 🤷‍♂️

Its amazing how many people out there just seeking interactive entertainment. No intention to buy .

Ive another 2 supposed to be viewing tomorrow and in total ive had about 20 enquiries.

Its currently offered cheap with mot expiring next week . I have it booked in for a test and i reckon it needs maybe £200 to mot it .

And still you get wasters.

Not a lot of campers out there these days for £6k with the equipment this has got.

With a years mot im asking £8k

Tam, I was watching Graham Hall dog trainer on TV tonight. He is brilliant. Don't know if you get the programme up there. His programme is called Dogs Behaving (Very) Badly. Each week he tackles everything from dogs chasing cars to dogs picking fights with other dogs, really interesting. He gets 100 per cent success rate. (maybe his failures don't get aired:giggler:)

I've been meaning to mention Graeme Hall too as he really is very good and admits when things don't go quite as expected but does find a solution. Obviously the TV program is edited down from what must be a lot of work and time to get to being in control and/or solving the issues of the various dogs as there is no magic cure.

When we watch the program we like to work out what the real issue is before it is divulged and the vast majority of the time we are spot on. Many times the dog hasn't the issue but the owners who are doing the wrong thing for the right reason, or mistaking the dog's behaviour for stress etc when it's actually the dog manipulating the owners to get what it wants. The episode with the collie apparently barking at his own reflection was a brilliant example of the latter when it turned out he wasn't looking at himself but 'spying' on the reflected reactions of the owners!

Sorry Tam, Minxy's spelling of his name is correct not mine if you are going to look for info on him online (y)

I watch Graeme Hall as well and think he is brilliant at what he does. I was interested to know what he charged so I Googled him and this is what I got 😱

According to his website, If you want a private session with Graeme, it will set you back £875 – if you live in certain areas of England and the Midlands. It'll cost more if Graeme needs to travel further.

I had a dog trainer come to my house to help me with my boy Stanley when he was a puppy. He walked into the house and asked where Stanley slept at night I told him he slept in the bedroom with us. He said, no that has to stop. He looked around the house and told me that my office was the best place for him to sleep, to move my desk and put a crate in there with a pair of my knickers inside. CREEP !! "you won't get any sleep for maybe 3 weeks, but that's what you have to do" I said that's not going to happen, Steve has to be at work at 6 every morning. I asked how much I owed him which he said was 70 quid. I paid him and we parted company.

I think that’s great value, assuming it’s 100% guaranteed to provide the appropriate result. Yes it’s an enormous amount of money but over the lifetime of a well behaved and happy dog it’s worth considering.
