Tam & co the great winter escape

gpat Tam is referring to the “YouTubers“ many of whom are also Patreon members who ask for “coffees” and earn money by being popular. I follow many and I agree with Tam that they are often more interested in gaining and keeping a following than in following the dream they started with before being sucked into “popular=money”. After saying that I still follow them. Examples are Foxes Afloat, Cruising the cut, Van wives, Mav, Bob Earnshaw, The Slaws…..
Good for them,,They put some time and effort in making the videos,,We follow Tread the Globe,,ExPawyers,,was following Kinging it and Jits...

busby I hesitate to put words into Tam’s mouth but he could be alluding to the way that Vlogs of those starting off as You Tubers change as they become more popular, or they start off pandering to public taste knowing there is money in it to subsidise or pay for their way of life. They realise that a) they have to pander to the crowd, and b) they have to keep the production line running even if they have nothing to say. Some Motorhomers resort to an endless parade of winter weekends away in dreary weather walking the dog and staying at pub stopovers; others replay past memories, and reviews of accessories are a favourite. Don’t get me wrong, I like most of them and no blame is attached, but I think that Tam is more interesting in living his dream and taking us along for the ride, no detours, if we don’t like it, then it is our problem not his, he is not going to fall into the trap. He is not doing it for the money. Now I will get out of his head before he gets a headache😂

Whilst I agree with most of your post the part I do not is the moving numbers around on their computers. Hard work is not always about physical actions but also about moving stuff around in the ehter, it is still hard work, not physically but mentally and can often mean longer hours than those in a physical line of work. I am sure you never worked 24*7 though it may have seemed like it as that is not something an average human can do and still retain any logic in thoughts or physical abilities thats why they torture prople by sleep deprivation!!! I work and have done for the last 20 odd years pushing numbers around and currently I start at 8:30ish but work many times till 9 or 10 PM but never stop before 7:30 so as I say don't put people down because they are not doing a physical job (I used to). Also for every person say making a car or digging the road or whatever you do there are back up staff to do the HR stuff, pay wages, organise benefits, selling the goods they make, doing customer service and after sales etc. Oh and the majority do not get paid millions of pounds your average teller in a bank will get just over minimum wage, the back office clerk settling a FX trade will get more but not much but they are just pushing numbers around just the same.
Whilst i don't deny that driving a desk might well be hard work in one sense. It is lighter work than those who do a hard manual labour job day in and day out. The hard labour job is more likely to be the one that causes disabilities etc in old age yet they are often less paid jobs, and less paid jobs are more likely not to have good pensions etc or the affordability to pay a private pension . I know none of mine were. The shittiest jobs are often the least paid under the guise of unskilled. Until something happens that makes people realise actually they are important after all

Kind of like what covid did , when everyone realised for a short time just how important those drivers, cleaners , shop staff etc were

Not that it made much difference to their wages right enough.

Im curious how you're quoting busby ....i can't see any comments from him as i have him on ignore. I was also assured by Jim that when i put someone on 2 way ignore they could not view or comment on any of threads.

But yes you're right i don't do it for the money i do it for the enjoyment 🤷‍♂️

My buses were based just outside Greater London and the London contracted buses ran from 05.00hrs to 01.00hrs
(Sundays 06.00 - 24.00hrs) and for the first few yrs that 4-6hrs was the only rest I could count on IF I didn't have any mechanical work to do on them.

As you say, not all work is physical and when you are starting up a business, especially at the beginning of Maggies recession in the late 70's, there is a lot of mental work involved!

So, YES I believe, for those first few years, at least, I did work 24/7!

Yes, I did have a Transport Manager and 4 drivers but to cover 'rest periods', holidays, sickness, breakdowns, office-work, VAT, service inspections, hired vehicles, bookings and a shortage of Drivers, I slept in my office more than I did at home!
(Thank goodness British buses operate under 'Domestic Rules' and not EU Tachograph rules)

He's back. I can see him.

I am sure Smirnoff is brewed and bottled in the USA.
It's got nowt to with Russia and that's a fact. In fact I believe less thN 2% of vodka consumed in the UK actually comes from Russia.

Saying that, I'm not going to drink it just because it sounds Russian

I never drank it anyway

Vile stuff

Tam many will look at you travelling Europe for months and consider you well off. I certainly couldn’t have done it at your age.
They might but then the last 4 months has cost me just over £2k so far 🤷‍♂️ there's people on here will spend that in a couple of weeks.

Id have spent more staying at home

Northernraider Busby suggested that being a “paid” YouTuber involves honest graft (my words) and shouldn’t be dismissed. I sort of agree but also see it as possibly a slippery slope - one you are certainly not on. He definitely commented on your thread.

Not saying you are rich. Sadly perception clouds the truth. We all look at people who we think are better off at the same time many look at us as better off. No matter what you have there are many who would love to have spent £2000 in the last 4 months. Not a criticism just an observation.

I think £500 a month is probably less than most pay for rent

You've to remember i aint on holiday , i live in my van fulltime . It makes sense to try and go south for winter. Although its currently minus 6 and im using boiling my potatoes for warmth 🤷‍♂️

Not surprising as the reason i have him on ignore is because the only time he posted in the past was to stir it.

I wouldn't say YouTubers worked hard to be honest ...i think its more a way to fund a lifestyle...the problem is many of them actually do this lifestyle harm by doing what they do.

And its not always a true depiction either.

Anyway its not for me

That’s the crux of it Tam, you live in the van rather than holiday in it, folks forget the live bit and think it’s just fun. Fuel costs are likely to sting a bit before you arrive back outside your ma’s but hopefully not too much 👍

Jim ...last year you pm'd me after i had said there was no block button on here and that when i ignored people who only contributed negativity or went out there way to wind up they could still access and view my content.

You told me this

I've seen people quote others ive had on my ignore list before and just thought it was a glitch but it still appears to be the case. And i find that a bit unfair.

Today someone again quoted someone on my ignore list .

Ive checked and double checked and yes the box is ticked in my settings for 2 way ignore.

Yet someone kindly screenshoted my thread and its quite clear this person not only can access my threads but leave comments i can't see.

How is this possible?

No lockdowns (Covid) so casual driver delivery work should be better? I think....

Yes I agree. They will have to change the name I think.

The TV is pumping out loads of "Just Eat" type of delivery companies, I am still trying to get my head around the uptake of Maccy D's & KFC, now even Greggs for sausage rolls! Lazy Buggers, get out and get them fresh, there are only up the road in most places, but getting much dearer these days, without a delivery charge.
I look at the takeaway prices from the junk mail that we all get whether we like it or not, and nearly fall off the chair these days

Well Gone are the days of the local chinkie offering A or B for 2 for £10/12, its now £7.50 for special mixed stir fried rice, and the Indian take aways want £12 for some of their main dishes, you wont get away with much less than £25/30 for two, even without the sides we all know & love.

With the rising costs of everything, even staying at home is going to be expensive and cold for many. £3K a year will not cover the increases for most peoples energy, rumours of even more increase next autumn.
How folks with kids will afford take aways, on top of Sky Sports packages, Netflix, Prime, data packages, mobile phones, rents/mortgages/council tax/water bills, home insurance, let alone run two cars legally, will be even harder challenge later this year, something has to give.

I am lucky, as even in a weak moment, rather than getting a take away, I buy the best ingrediants I can, and spend the time to cook from scratch. Spent my whole life trying to learn the secrets of making a "Restaurant Quality" Indian or Chinese meal and have got it sussed at last. (without too much ghee or any MSG )
The store cupboard ingredients list is high, the 2nd freezer is stacked, but I can now have a meal with a main & two sides, without too much fuss. It just takes some organisation & batch cooking time, buying the fresh herbs & ingredients as you need them, plus loads of takeaway type plastic boxes to store the stuff.:giggle: Tesco is your friend.(y)

I know Tam makes his living delivering take aways, but he is not daft enough to need to live on them for his daily meals, he likes to cook his own from scratch, even the dogs get a share.:giggle:
Hope you get home safe Tam, sadly maybe the weather over here (down South) has been better than you have experienced most of the time, better maybe going at a different time of year next time, but still outside the peak, so you can find park ups.(y)
