Tam and Toby ~~ Hunting Zorba .....Take two.

I look forward you you going to address the windows. It’s a lot of glass to get rid off and replace with something to blend in with the body work.

Number plate looks good too, has a ring to it...?

looking forward to the thread and pictures of the conversion...👍🏼

In the photos it kooks like it has an awning both sides - surely not on a bus?

Yes but all flat surfaces so its just a case of removing glass using it as templates for steel then puddle welding them in to the spaces. Few brace bars on inside then painted insulated etc ...never know there was windows there

Here's one someone else did

Well done Tam. Did you get someone to look it over for you, or are you just taking a chance on rust etc?

At least you can have a bunch of money to throw at it at that price.

Can you afford to hang onto the Hymer to live in till the project is finished? Would give you more choice of places to rent, maybe a long way from Mum's place.

So now you have the one you want in UK you do not have to allow time for looking in Germany, nor having to worry about any import tax - I am still following any information on the new UK rules for my possible swapping our Arto for a LHD and then maybe taking it back to UK in future.

Your Hymer is not LHD is it?

Geoff

And you told me you weren’t buying a bus, maybe get some ideas off that link I sent you now. 😉

I didn't get anyone to look it over ...due to lockdown etc that was difficult . But i figured as its a 1 owner bus and a business vehicle it earns someone's living so it pays for them to look after it, then as its a psv it has to get checks done every 6 weeks , it has high miles but full mercedes service history so im hoping that means that anything its required its had done. Overall the bodywork doesn't look to bad from the photos but the common rust areas on these are quite easy fixes. But as you say it is cheap at that price especially as vans i was looking at in germany also had on average 300 - 400k km and for a 2003 - 2007 around €8500 -10000.

I plan to hold on to toby and live in it still until ive built the merc ....unless my mum wants me to move in to the house in which case i may take advantage of the higher demand for motorhomes and sell toby around may/june ...not sure yet.

But yes i can stop looking for vans now and just look for build ideas etc ...

Toby is rhd

I didnt plan to and most of them i wouldnt have but this particular one had the side door i wanted in the right place as most are at the back where my bed will be so it wouldn't work ...it also had the half tailgate rather than 2 large doors i wouldnt use anyway. And of course the price was right

But the build you had sent wasn't my taste , i plan to build from scratch and wouldn't go down the caravan interior route etc ....and all the windows in this will be removed

I'm confused by the no windows thing - isn't going to be very very dark inside?
Surprisingly not ....if you close all the blinds in your motorhome but have 4 skylights on it you get a good bit light in
Then with lighter colours inside its quite bright.

All those glass windows would be a nightmare for condensation and cause damp issues overtime. I plan to have 4 skylights ....and i may fit 2 seitz sliding double glazed windows one either side behind the cab

Cab will be closed off from the rear too.

That will make coming back less depressing as you've an exciting new project. But please don't rush, it's sooooo good to have your thread to follow....
Dont worry i still wont be back before end of march ....ive still 5 countries to get through on way home and no idea what complications face me on the way.

It wasn’t to do with being to your taste , what it was is a thread about stripping out and what he found as he went along. I was merely trying to be helpful, I have my own ideas just the same as you but I wouldn’t just dismiss anyone’s help. 😳

Not dismissing help just saying it wasnt to my taste and that whilst it is a bus ill be making it a van .

The stripping out parts the easy bit ....big hammer a saw and an angle grinder ill make short work of it

wasn't intending to sound ungrateful just saying that what i plan is a very different route to that guys build.

I am looking forward to seeing your journey of converting it. Hope it’s not making you want to come home earlier 🤣
Nah my original plan wasn't to come back till end of march but then as i thought about viewing vans in germany etc i thought id spend a few weeks doing that and be back end of April.
As I've now bought a van ill likely be back sometime between end of march and mid April probably. .....so don't worry

Although my travel insurance ( for what it covers ) runs out end of march as that was original time .... hopefully won't need it

No please not, I will have him on the phone for hours about his electrics.
Lol mibbes aye mibbes naw 😉. The guy i plan to use for supply of parts @tinybuildelectrics usually does a step by step consultation , plan and support package in the price of the kits ....so might not bug you about it that much lol

Bloody electrics will likely cost more than the van 🤣🤣

So in between van buying etc i managed to hike up to the wee church up on the hill .....its been really stormy today , had thunder lightening torrential rain earlier and high winds but its dried up now thankfully .

After the hike I drove up the coast for an hour and now parked at another beach

I'm actually not a great fan of light - all the property adverts saying how much light comes in put me off right away...
... but obviously some light.
I wasn't thinking the original glass because it would cause the issues you mention.

Now I'm curious as to why you want to separate cab from living area... surely you lose a lot of habitation space & two comfortable chairs?

You've obviously given this a lot of thought - have you sketched out your rough design plan - and are you willing to reveal?

No point in comming home till the enforced hotel stay and the cost of it is over mate.

Directly behind the cab im going to have a width ways L shaped sofa facing to the rear of the van and side door . I rarely sit in my cab chairs when im not driving ...i tend to sit in the back more ...so for a few reasons really
1) privacy ....stops people seeing in the back
2) warmth ...the cab having single glazed windows , vents etc holes behind dash to engine bay ....its one of the hardest parts to heat and also where condensation gathers on windows etc .

3) security ....with only one rear door to access the living area theres less chance of a break in

When you enter the side door the sofa will be on right side and the woodburner on the left .

The bed will be width ways along very rear of van , approximately 1200mm from floor . Shoilet in front of bed on lhs , then sink unit between that and start of sofa

Rhs will be wardrobe then fridge then cooker and woodburner.

Thats the rough idea i have at present.
