Taking your dog to Europe

I enquired at a vets near us for an additional passport as Oscar's is full. They quoted an eye watering £89! 👎

Out of interest what are you all paying for blood to be taken and lab report. Mine was £90. Interested to see the variance across the country.
We applied for our dogs first passport last October so everything is in place now. In total I paid £220 for everything our vet had stopped doing just the rabies jab in preparation for any new legislation that will be introduced when they sort things out.

I would get it done now. The longer you wait after vaccination the greater the chance of the dog failing the blood test. If they do fail you have to start the cycle again.
Came back from France on 1st July. Pet Passport with tapeworm tab date and time only. NO blood sample required for Rabies yet as long as they have had a Rabies jab or booster as required! Only checks (pet passport) on French side, Calais. No checks on UK side as we were waved through :giggle:

The blood test to prove Rabies antibodies is not for coming back into the uk, it's incase of a no deal B***** then the EU require it, if this is the case from starting the process it can take upto 4 months before you can take your pet abroad.
The pet passport is all you need to come back into the uk.

I never understand why people don't go to official sites to check things out, relying instead on rumour and dodgy government ministers. See the government website - rules that applied when we were fully in the EU apply to the end of this year, so you need a rabies jab, documentation from the vet (ie passport) and off you go, then go to a vet within 3 days of return for a tapeworm tablet against fox tapeworms we don't have in GB.

Oven ready Johnson said. Why the change now?

Given we are going out December and returning January this is going to be a right pain the backside! Better book an appointment at the vets September....
Because he lied?

Down South it cost me £140.00 per dog April 2019 - Luckily they both passed the test first time!

You're very lucky gaining freedom through Brexit. How did you manage that? I've lost mine.

Same for us. We took our old boy out on 5/7 and returned on 10/7. Waved through both the UK and the French border controls each side of the water.
Spent €44 to get him wormed in Belgium but the only people who wanted to see his pet passport at all was the vet in Belgium (to fill out the worming bit) and the DFDS check-in chap at Dunkerque (to give us a windscreen PET sticker).
The French border lads at Dunkerque wanted to get into the motorhome to check for stowaways, but took one whiff of dog's pungent exhaust gases and decided against it 😂
There seems to be "The Rules" and then "The Practice".
We got the impression that UK Border Force were more interested in stowaways than returning dogs as you'd expect.

(PS: Dog came with us when we moved back to UK from Cyprus in 2010. Our UK vet said his rabies jab is still valid.)

Never mind the dogs, more concerned about the EHIC.

The loss of the EHIC is one of the worst things about Brexit.

If you've ever had to rely on emergency treatment/ healthcare in Europe before it's been so easy. My daughter had sepsis in Sweden and the free care she got was priceless. Now we'll be at the mercy of insurers and god help those with pre-existing...

Trouble is that the official site isn't always up to date ... It would be useful though if those who DID post info put the right info too ... it's between 1 and 5 days before return.

I've just got back from the vet, they have no idea what to advise people at the moment, other than the current scheme isn't changing before 1.1.21.

Yes, sorry Speve, I was trying to reply to John Barnet's comment above, and referring to post Brexit.

Yep, the complications start next year, till then we still have our rights and freedoms.

Then why not take control of the situation and have you pets titre tested now! Then if things do change after 31st Dec, worse case scenario would be that all you'll need to do is 10 days before going to an EU country is to get an animal health certificate (AHC) issued and signed by your vet. It’s then valid for 4 months for further travel within the EU.

Pete

I have a appointment at the vets next week for my dog to have the Titre test, he had his Rabies booster in March.
Best to cover all bases even with a deal one never knows if the present arrangements will stay the same.

Check the cost first as some vets charge a LOT of money for it and you don't have to use your own vet.

Don't know if it will apply to your Vets, but as Minxy Girl says, check the charges. We got a bit of a shock today, a straightforward consultation has been increased to £55.55 and £31.32 for eardrops. When I queried it I was told they've had to increase their fees as they can't see as many animals. These costs are around 50% higher than their usual fees. We're not in an expensive area normally - North Lincolnshire.
