Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

No, you’re an optimist, getting a free pole mount doesn’t reduce what you paid for the rest of it.😎

Ian
Yes it does cos I got another £52 in the bank so I’m using that to offset what I paid for my cheap Starlink kit.

Duh! You stupid or what blah blah blah.

Lol 😆

Sorry if this has been covered in the 30 pages so far but a friend was looking at Starlink to use in our home town as the centre of town has shockingly bad Internet coverage. He used a mobile phone app to check the speeds available with starlink at that location and they were OK but when looking at the reviews, many commented that service was good on the first day but poor then after and customer service is appalling.

What speeds do you typically get uploading and downloading?

Did the service get better or worse over time?

Have you had success when trying to contact Customer Services?

Cheers

I did get in touch with customer support as speeds got slower. I have received the following reply (app won’t let me copy to paste, so have attached as two images

Connecting on 2.4ghz or 5ghz has nothing to do with the Internet speeds. That's the speed from your device to the router. Sounds to me as maybe they have not got enough satellites yet to secure consistent high speeds. Can't say for sure as not had chance to test mine on the road yet.
I would only use starlink at home as a backup or if there is no other suitable option.it's expensive for home use and there are a lot cheaper options out there and definitely not for retail price now as that's insanely high.

Starlink speeds are higher and the coverage is far superior to any mobile data network . With a good external 4/5g antenna for data while in motion and the Starlink system when stationary, you will always have internet , wherever you are .

First stage of making the router work on 12v as per The Overlanders mod...

Almost there

And done !!

Next stage is to solder wires onto this part

ok. I am confused? Why are you stripping down the router? I thought overlanders cut the back off his dish?
That's to flat mount the dishy only, nothing to do with the router and 12v.

If you want to do 48v without the router then I thought you bought the ethernet adapater and cut the cable on that to inject the voltage. No need to take the front off the existing router?

Just remembered the cable it completely removable from dishy so you can forgo the ethernet adapter and just cut the main cable for injection.

You're right, that's one way if doing it. The way I am doing it as per the overlanders is not to cut the cable but to mod the router. I'm not suggesting it's the best way, or even the easiest way but its a simple mod

I wasn't criticising you. I was just confused as to why you would choose the hard way? Cutting a replaceable cable has got to be easier than potentially knackering a major component you cannot step back to?

I will be ordering a spare cable and butchering that to do the PoE injection :D

I didn't think you were being critical!! I just fancied doing it that way, as I said it might not be the best or easiest. I even bought a new RJ45 crimper to cut the cable but decided to go down a different path.
The reality is that the router isn't even that good apparently but it's prob good enough for what I want to do.
I did buy two starlinks, one of which I will leave as is on 240v for now, the other I will add the 12v option for use in the motorhome whilst at the same time maintaining its 240v capability by doing this mod

Yes exactly as that's what I am going to do (y)

I might be stupid 🤔 but I’m a realist! 🤣 Whereas you’re a fantasist! 😎🤣

Ian 🤪
No I don’t have any fantasies but please stop sending me messages with photos of you in leather gear, it’s put me off my tea.

Would you prefer Lycra? I can do Lycra too.👍

Cheap but sturdy/secure, mounting option maybe silka to the roof? custom made double glaze frame (glass removed) with perspex cover
frame cost £78.00

I'm now thinking of our of the box !

I'm ready to solder the wires onto the 48v (x12), 22v and gnd wires

IMG_20230618_120406.jpg

However I've been thinking of how to bring the wires out. I have provisionally got them exiting out if the bottom as per the overlanders example.
However I also needed to work out a way to connect the router to a supply via the transformer/voltage stabiliser and then the 12v supply.

My thoughts now are to panel mount a female socket into the side or back of the router and a female socket as a fixed point in the motorhome, which will be fed from the transformer/voltage stabiliser.

I would then make up a male to male lead to link the two together.

My thinking is

If the router was connected to mains supply, then the male socket or external wires would be 'live' with 45v and 12v and there is potential although minimal, for a connection to be made from 48v to 12v which could cause damage.
If I use female connections those connections would be less likely to be compromised.
Also if used male 'outlets' there is potential that further down the line in terms of owners, may attempt to plug an electrical appliance lead into it
If I use a permanent socket, then there's no additional trailing lead from the router, making it more compact.

Views/comments if you can think of any problems with my thought process, other than suggesting I don't do it lol!

Dave, I'm sure you've really thought it through. My concern would be if someone (not necessarily you), operated the inverter for another appliance with the Starlink lead already plugged in, before the male end was plugged in to the satellite socket, thereby exposing live 240v pins to the unwary operator, ie, you. :Eeek:

If I've misunderstood your post above, I'm happy to be corrected. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Edited...........Possibly due to a poor signal area, but your second have of your post wasn't visible to me when I posted Dave. :(

Having thought about it, those blue Euro plugs/sockets might be the way to go, ie, a downward angled male Euro socket on the box, with a matching female on the external end of the power lead, with your domestic 3 x pin plug at the inverter socket, ie, all the power without the exposure. Just a thought. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Use xt60 connectors. Very reliable and perfect for this application 👍🏻

Some surface mount ones I’ve just seen on Amazon for you. Usually they are yellow which is what I’ve used over the years.

Which blue euro plugs ?? Happy to consider anything that is small and achieves the same thing

These are what I'm thinking about but if I could get something smaller. I am looking to see if I can find the cloverleaf laptop style as I think they would be smaller
I don't really understand what you are doing sorry. But I would not use those connectors for anything other than feeding in 240V. Sorry If I am misunderstanding you.
