Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

Is anyone signed up to and using Roam at the moment? How do the speeds compare to residential?

I’ve been using roam for six weeks around the UK. I seem to get 230mb max down everywhere we have been, around seven different locations so far. I’ve seen as low as 90mb one evening in Norfolk, but that seems to be an anomaly, congestion/contention maybe? Bird on antenna? Who knows.

really for streaming in HD you only need 5-10mb so even if you are getting a 3rd of the lowest ie 90mb its still going to be good enough for what most will want it for :)

Browsing the internet is going to be fine even on that as well, as is youtube etc etc, now if you are uploading you are going to struggle as most uploads speeds on this are very low.

Anything signal wise from communication or broadcasting in Norfolk always seems to be low, and the nearer to the sea, the worse it seems to get. :( 90Mb is brilliant, even if is from a satellite hundreds of miles high. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

I sent Starlink a message asking how can I can return the unused pole mount and after quite a few days the replied back with…..

Very decent. Cost of processing return for them is higher than value, so nice approach to drive PR instead!

I have one used in Wales and one roaming around and had nothing less than 120 on average...
The annoying thing is at each switch on it keeps saying 4 or 5 hours collating obstruction data even though it one is permanent mounted on my static .

Some of your "cheap" suggestions are not suitable. They are designed for longitudinal load not lateral. Probably wouldn't stand up to a mild breeze with a dishy on top sadly.
They were just suggestions to look at othe options, not limited only to the examples I gave.

I am not having a go. Just don't want anyone trying cheaper options and risking the dishy taking a nose dive.

Had a "ham" friend use an extendible pole of some sort back in the 80s to save some money. His experimental microwave dish which he had spent months designing and building took a nose dive in light winds when the pole crumpled.
Old Bill never went cheap on poles ever again I heard. I am not even sure if he ever rebuilt that particular antenna. It was a marvel of engineering to my childlike eyes. It was a microwave horn with wave guides and all sorts of copper and aluminium protrusions. Not very big but very intricate from memory. I am grateful that back then I was into computers and packet radio on 2M which was much, much cheaper to design and build for. Also had a play with SSTV.

The dishy is not that light, it has a big surface area to catch the wind and will put a lot of lateral pressure on anything it is mounted to. Using something designed for the majority of force along longitudinal axis is more likely to crumple. I would hate to see anyone cheap out and have their dishy crash to the ground. £129 is not too bad for a very tall pole like this. I am sure there are cheaper shorter ones than this but I wouldn't go too far on the cheap side by using stuff not designed for the purpose. The dishies are not £99 any more :(

Why do you need a long pole, the satellites are 550km away 😂 😂
If you want it mounted above the van height without using roof space. A rear mounted pole as demonstrated by a member earlier in this thread is an excellent idea.
A taller pole would allow you to raise it over the height of low buildings and very tall hedges for example when roaming.

I will let you test with your own dishy,
I was tempted by the £99 offer but managed to resist unlike some who I bet bought one but don't really need it! 😄

Consequently I don't have one to test the clothes prop theory on! Probably a good thing. 😆

As an aside is it really called Dishy McDishy? 😄

Close but no, the original beta dish was called Dishy McFlatface :D
The service beta code named "Better Than Nothing Beta"

The engineers at all Musk's companies have a good if geeky sense of humour and are free to express it :D

Minxy see how many Easter Eggs you can spot in this video. I recommend playing full screen, highest resolution and with either a good sound system or headphone cranked up :D

#591 pole attached to ladder

I can't imagine anyone doing that!
Me neither. At £99 then putting it on pause for when I want internet when travelling. It was a no brainer.
Ahem ...
To be honest I think I got carried away in all the excitement of the £99 deal and probably can't justify the cost of activating it for a month every time we go away in the MH. Also to make best use of it, I either need to get an Inverter or make/buy a 12v conversion kit.

My son has offered me a long term loan of a new
Netgear Nightgear 5g router, so with the addition of an external aerial that should probably satisfy my needs.

There may be a new Dishy in classifieds soon! :(
😄

Did just that for the house, plus I purchased a pole mount and didn’t need it and Starlink didn’t want it back and refunded me £52.00.

So my kit cost me £62.00 not bad.

You spelt that wong I’m Realist 😆.

No, you’re an optimist, getting a free pole mount doesn’t reduce what you paid for the rest of it.😎
