Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

Ordered mine not sure I need it but at that price is too good to miss will just use it as a spare when needed. Will want it on the roof though using the hole that the TV aerial used to be in so some modification will be required. Will check once it's here to see if the pipe is going to fit in. If not I have a 3d printer so should be able to do something with it.

Its 14 days from shipping date.
Shipping date or delivery date?

Just had notification that mine arrives today, so will have a look when I get back home this evening and a play with it tomorrow

And it's arrived - woo hoo !!

That's a big box!!
Mine also arrives today, but at my Daughters, as we're away until August boo hoo! But I have today ordered the Dishy Dualie DC Power Supply and I think need to order the Starlink Ethernet Adapter, maybe a bit more research too :)

Not read the whole thread but....

This seems a mad price to pay for some data. There are so many cheap SIM deals out there. You just need to be flexible and do your research.

I think its about convenience and not having to mess around with multiple sims/networks/signal etc etc, the cost of these are now so cheap and with the ability to freeze the plans when not in use is pretty sure the reason most are jumping on this. I for one do not have an issue with signal using external antenna on roof and 5 g mifi but for both home back up and motorhome back up this is an ideal solution.

Not for everyone of course and when i say cheap the cost of the hardware at £99 is a steal, not so much the monthly cost but if only using it when needed and pausing when not it's not too bad.

Depends on your needs I guess, I want to be able to work remotely and still do video conferences, teams calls etc and the amount of times 4G let alone 5G lets you down or on a campsite on the wifi is rubbish.

This is a game changer for people like me meaning I can be away more in the van in Europe and still have the access I need without worrying about data caps, wifi signals etc.

It is critical I have internet access all the time. My livelihood relies on it. Starlink is a game changer.

More and more people make their living using the internet and finding out the campsite you booked into is too far away from a 4/5G tower to get a signal is just not good enough.

Mine has arrive as well today set up and working well. 190 download. Changed it to roam mode and have paused it until I need in the summer. Can use now until 6 June
It's a good policy to subscribe every six months or so - to update the firmware which seems to change regularly.
I think it's possible to update the firmware without a subscription - it has been claimed that this is possible, but I've not tried it. This post seems to confirm it.

Cheers

Fair enough - I was thinking as a retired leisure traveller. I tend to park off grid so if signal is not good I go to where it is - or do without, which is no bad thing occasionally!

For the leisure traveller, it is also attractive as it allows you to stream tv/films etc anywhere without worrying about data limits. So when you tootle off to France or Spain for your jollies your missus can still watch the soaps and you can still watch your sports.
There are loads and loads of good reasons to buy one. There is literally only one reason not to and that is cost.

I know you have responded a bit differently now people have explained and you recognise it's a good solution for some people. for me when we are in France for the 5/6 weeks of the school holiday, we have three static vans all next to each other. Out nearest FREE outlet is an hour away and we can only get one SIM at a time at €30 a time as they need to be activated in store. The sims provide 210 GB (or one month) and soon run out if everyone uses it (6 adults and two TV/gaming children). £85 per month for unlimited internet for everyone, whenever they want is a game changer for us as a family

Even for us two just for trips out if the uk, it means w dont have to think about how much data we use or where to get it from. Or will the SIM work in other countries etc

I'm sure other people have other justifications, who knows, at that price you might decide to buy one and pause it until you think it's feasible to use OR sell it!!

A question for those already using Starlink.....

When using it abroad what IP does it assign? As a UK subscriber do you get a UK IP address? Or do you get one for the country you're in? Thinking about the potential for working abroad, but corporate IT need to pre-approve the location.

Nope when the kit arrives you have 14 days before the first billing cycle starts so you can test and return within the 30 day free return period but with Roam you can pause and unpause the service so in effect the first 14 days are freeish.

I was charged £ 4.53 pro-rated for going from Residential to Roam and the app shows if I pause I wont be charged until i resume the service.

Works out well for us as we are heading to France for a few days shortly but back before the 14 day period ends when I will put it on pause until later in the Summer.

Same :) within second

Before I start pressing buttons ... Did you change to roam and immediately pause or change to roam but you will pause before 14 days from it arriving (shipping?) so you get 14 days 'test' ?

Thanks

When in Holland it geolocated my UK version and gave me a Dutch IP address. I'd recommend a VPN every time, as I'm not sure of any encryption on the link .... In the UK I get a UK IP address.
I VPN'd back to my home network, where I run a VPN server.
Cheers

I changed to roam before delivery and then paused when I set it up as it tells you the date for the pause which for us it 6th June.

And it’s fast

Would a VPN not slow the connection down or would you get the full connection speed ?

So have you got 14 days to use it now or 14 days from when you unpause?
My thinking is that I could change to roam immediately but hold off on pausing until 12 days?

Thanks, that's what we needed to know. A VPN to fool geolocation isn't an option when connecting to work's network. But so long as we know it's a local IP address we can book it in with IT

Why isn't a VPN an option? Is it a rule or a technical restriction?

For security purposes. Allowed to work abroad but has to be cleared with IT beforehand. A VPN might be technically possible, but unadvisable if you want to keep your job!

That is confusing sorry?

Are you saying using a VPN to hide your country and not telling your company is unadvisable? If so I totally agree.

But if the IT dept doesn't want you to use a VPN to secure the connection that would confuse me. Most decent companies that are big enough to have an IT dept should offer a direct VPN onto the company network anyway for security purposes.
