Starlink ordered… I feel it’s the only sensible option now..

Nice solution. Were you tempted to mod the cable to shielded RJ45 connections to allow Dishy Mcflatface to be used elsewhere, or even buy an additional cable?

I wasn’t as I’ve configured it already so it can be used away from the vehicle. The cable is all stored in the small box on the roof so that I may run the cable out into a field and hook up the dish away from the vehicle, should topographical/foliage conditions dictate I do. 👍🏻

This is mine. Made for deployment on-site.
New version with box.

They have a couple of pole mount options in the Starlink shop, have you seen these?

yes, i was wondering if someone had already tried it as not sure if the dimensions are different but it would be an easy swap out if they did with no drilling etc

you prompted me t check my emails - mine is also arriving tomorrow !

I can confirm you can order the rural £99 kit (mine arrives tomorrow) and switch to Mobile Regional (Roam) straight away and the best bit you can pause within 14 days so can try it in France over the long weekend then put on hold until I need it later in the Summer.

Once you receive shipping notification you Create Notes & Actions for - go I to the app and change the service.

I've just done the same as 'orridge' received my shipping notice this morning, would have been nice to play with it for a few days, but I'm in Spain/Portugal etc until August, so immediately went on line and changed to mobile regional/paused.

re the 14 day period - i assume you will be charged for the full month for this or is it a free 14 day test period (which seems unlikely - but great if it is!)

if you are charged for the full first month, couldnt you just use it for that month (after pausing it) until the month runs out?

PS i understand you might not know the answer, but someone might?

Nope when the kit arrives you have 14 days before the first billing cycle starts so you can test and return within the 30 day free return period but with Roam you can pause and unpause the service so in effect the first 14 days are freeish.

I was charged £ 4.53 pro-rated for going from Residential to Roam and the app shows if I pause I wont be charged until i resume the service.

Works out well for us as we are heading to France for a few days shortly but back before the 14 day period ends when I will put it on pause until later in the Summer.

quick update - at another location now (third with Starlink) in Topsham (Devon) and still getting over 200Mb down, although peak yesterday evening was down to 130Mb. 👌

Don’t know how we functioned on 4G for so long!

We’ve also consumed 221Gb of data 🤷‍♂️

Have you done your 12v and 48v conversion yet Charles?
A pre packaged 12v conversion kit would be great. I’m sure there will be a few enterpriseing people doing it in time. I see a couple from the States are on it but when u factor in import costs not worth it. I used to have good sparks skills and even have all the Ethernet splice kit so should have a go really. But I will wait a while to see if a prebuilt comes along

It's working on the bench at home! I used the kit in my previous post, and it arrived fairly swiftly.
I use a Teltonika router that runs on 48 Volts, so I didn't have to put in a new 12-volt power for running off the mains.
This is the adapter and POE injector (I see they are not in stock at present). There are a few alternatives if you trawl the Internet:
  1. A POE injector for Starlink (they have to be about 150W),
  2. A Starlink cable to Ethernet Adapter.
I used the plug-in adapter as I didn't fancy cutting the existing Starlink cable, as some have reported issues with this with bad connections and earthing issues. It's very easy to adapt as everything is in the dish on 192.168.1.1 - and the Starlink external box is just a WiFi AP and power supply.

It is a dual power 12 volt and mains box, using a small step up for the 12, and a small switched mode for the mains (the unlabeled boxes below). You can easily add an ethernet connector to the van, but I just connect to the WiFi from my internal router.

I'm still not convinced that there is enough power to run on full motor and snow mode - but you can disable the heating, and it seems to idle at about 40 to 60 watts on 12 volts. When I finally get it in another box and looking smart, I'll take another picture or two, but at the moment I'm just using it on mains hookups.

There is a very crude diagram below - still on the road and can't do anything fancy!
Cheers

Looking great for future internet mobile connections.
Does anyone know when the £99 deal is likely to end or is it now going to be the regular UK price?

I'm not sure if this will work. When in transit it is difficult to get the motor-driven dish into a horizontal position to minimise windage.
The stow mode puts the dish at about a 45-degree angle.

Since the antenna can work flat (it's a phased array for those who have a technical interest) people seem to be disabling the motor and pointing it straight up. It can't be as efficient as it can be but seems to work (the proper mobility flat dish seems to be a much higher gain and therefore does work well).

Maybe others will have brighter ideas.
Cheers

Me too, but mine is with DPD, who’s website says “sorry we don’t seem to have received your consignment from the sender”

If it wouldn't work as is i would probably look to disable the motor as it will be far easier than having to mount it on the roof and start cutting it to pieces. The flat mount dish they supply is just way to expensive to consider but thanks anyway.

Ok so this 14 day thing
Does this start from when you first activate it or ?
Its not arrived yet but my account is active
I don't need to use until next Monday then need it for 2 weeks before putting it on hold until the summer
Would be nice to use for the 2 weeks and not get any costs

Its 14 days from shipping date.
