Hi guys I wanted to start a threat to see the thoughts on this government and how they are looking after us.
We have a little Citroen c1. With zero road tax. And it looks like it’s going up to £195 give or take a year from April.
We have a motorhome and it’s currently £135 per year but it seems as it’s less than three years old and over £40k in values will be hit with the £600 per year tax and then the road tax is going to £105 I think so if my sums are right we are going from £135 per year for both to £1000 a year. Not a bad way of looking after the normal person paying into this system for over 40years. Oh and the electric car we lease will go from zero tax to £195 but that’s not in our budget.

Correct.

So long as you don't mind queuing up at a post office (which does road tax) for ages along with everyone else who's doing the same!
That’s not a problem for us as our local villages post offices are not that busy. Can understand though for others at work or in large towns etc that it would be a pain.
To save £40-50 I’d still do it, it’s bread into me growing up with very little money in our house.

Looks like my 61 reg diesel mini, currently band A (free) will move to band B (£20). I don't think I would bother with sorn etc for £20 a year and at least I can put it on DD so I save the faff of renewing every year.

So long as your local PO does VED it won't be a problem, but many don't.

Dear keyboard warrior in response to your posts:

except for posts directly encouraging violence against others
Why? It should be encouraged against politicians who lie, cheat, & attempt to do anything but work solely for the people. They are not there to enjoy themselves, live the high life ,just nose to the grindstone & churn ot the work

Are you serious? There are two MPs who have been murdered in the last 10 years and many have to live with threats of violence from thugs with more brawn than brain. Who decides whether they ".. lie, cheat, & attempt to do anything but work solely for the people."? You? I hardly think you are a paragon of circumspection and neutral arbiter to make such decisions and neither are most others. We all have our prejudices!
That was a government decision given that prisons were full to overflowing.
no they are 50% empty if you had all the scum on chain gangs day & night & start repairing the roads. No need for H&S or safety .Save fortunes as well.

Would Yaxley-Lennon aka Tommy Robinson be among the "scum" on your chain gangs?!!

P.S. What do the native Spanish population think of immigrants like you? From what I read they don't seem too happy?

They put up with those incomers who pay there way.It is the illegals they don't like ,except when they illegally work them for tap washers.

I read about VED changing in the budget news articles online. It appears that those vehicles already registered (and those before the new rates come into force) won't get hit with the massive increases for new registrations, however £0 car band is being changed so that cars currently on that rate will instead pay £20 a year. I haven't studied all the bands so can't say what the likely increases are but from what I've read PHGV will only go up by RPI, whatever that is, so fortunately the £165 I currently pay won't go stupidly high ... unless of course they move the ruddy 'cones' again (geddit? :giggle:).

If people want to save having to pay the new rates then SORN end of Feb and retax in early March.

I get a brown envelope through the letter box advising road tax is due on such and such a vehicle we have.
I pay, end of.
On 1st of this month i paid £600 for 1 year for our Audi, next year who knows, the envelope will come i pay.
Still don't want an electric car..........even if it were to stay free of road tax.

Our son has a Tesla & is facing the same situation. He will sorn it for a day before tax is due then retax at the zero rate for another year while he can. At least it will save a few bob.
No need to SORN it, you can just retax it online so long as you have the V5 with document number on it. Did it with my Tesla last week in case it got clobbered in the budget. Mine wasn't due till next June.

Absolutely bonkers the number of tax bands these days, just for cars, remember the good old days just one rate of car tax!
Those politicians aided by civil service bureaucrats love to build a little empire. Look at out Tax Code - the largest in the civilised world. Keeps a lot of people in an unproductive job.

Tbh Richard if the road tax was for the roads I don’t think anyone would mind paying it👍
Are you saying people like paying other kinds of tax! Most are trying as hard as they can to avoid paying.

I have a couple of older motorcycles which come into the "historic" tax class. I do not pay any tax for this class, but the daft thing is that every year I get a reminder from the DVLA and then have to go through the motions of re-taxing the bikes. It's a good old government paperwork for paperwork exercise..

In fairness it does check that the bike is insured. I have to do it on my old BSA but as you, no need for MOT as we are expected to be capable of maintaining our machines in a roadworthy condition. I guess it also helps them maintain the SORN statuses.

Sort of true. I do not tell them that it is insured as they know that already. I was in Spain when the renewal for my Norton arrived in the post last month and I was 28 days late in "taxing" it. I did wonder of I would get a fine fir having an untaxed vehicle 😳.

We need a new system based on miles used aswell as things like weight (damage to roads) and emissions.

I have paid £415 this year for a car that ended up doing 500 miles (less on public road as it's a track car). The other car was £385 and did 4000 miles. The motorhome (£165) did 3000 miles (unusual for me due to health issues) with half of those in France!

Compare that to people doing 10,000 - 30000 miles a year possibly paying less. doesn't make sense.

Didn’t understand a word of that so thought I’d copy this which shows our March 2017 car goes from £0 to £20.

while my 2021 electric moped goes from £0 to £25 - mad!!!

Get what your saying, but….

Vehicle excise duty/vehicle tax is no more related to road use than national insurance is to NHS usage?

There is a proposed new first year tax on vehicles starting April 2025 so initially you pay extra for the first registration only then it reverts to the increased VED bands.
Do you have any further detail or links on this? I have a new van coming in Spring and wondering how much post April registration is going to affect us.
