Hi guys I wanted to start a threat to see the thoughts on this government and how they are looking after us.
We have a little Citroen c1. With zero road tax. And it looks like it’s going up to £195 give or take a year from April.
We have a motorhome and it’s currently £135 per year but it seems as it’s less than three years old and over £40k in values will be hit with the £600 per year tax and then the road tax is going to £105 I think so if my sums are right we are going from £135 per year for both to £1000 a year. Not a bad way of looking after the normal person paying into this system for over 40years. Oh and the electric car we lease will go from zero tax to £195 but that’s not in our budget.

Possibly “some bloke on YouTube” is not the most reliable of sources? The facts have been known, and freely available, for some time. I suppose there is not much demand for facts on YouTube?

A family up our road had two boys. Within a year then father had died from cancer. Mum had given up work to bring up the children properly. Their world fell apart and she had to rely on benefits for a year until the youngest started school when she went back to teaching part-time, but still needed help for a few years.

If the dad hadn't fallen I'll they were planning to have one more child.

Please don't tell me that people should have a crystal ball into the future, or indeed should never fall onto hard times through no fault of their own. Where is the compassion that?

The children came about because you responded to a perfectly valid comparison between the opening subject and other taxes etc, with an unforgiving and uncaring statement.

Woooaaahhh - let’s back up a little here!

Are the collective now saying that my zero road tax Aygo is now attracting some form of tax to be paid? Anyone got a source for this information? When does it get applied from?

Can you tax vehicles early for a year?
No mor zero tax for anyone as it seems next it will battery scooters and push bikes

From what I understand, the changes would be:-

the zero rated band (A) is being removed and you move to the next band which will be £20 for the C1.

the EV will move to the £190 from April 2025.

the luxury additional rate will apply to those vehicles registered from April 2025. It is not being retrospectively applied. It generally applies between years 2 and 6. The additional rate is £410 plus the normal band rate for that vehicle at the time. So for many £600 in total.

having said that, its always been wrong when a car can have a zero rated band but motorbikes don't. my bike is £111 a year at the moment.
Graham, road tax on a bike is now £117
Just had to tax mine😥

The article from the govt re vehicle tax is dated earlier in the year. This has been changed by the budget but not updated on .gov.uk yet. I did read on one of the motoring web sites that the luxury car tax I.e. over £40000 would not apply to EV cars. Incidentally this has been in place for years but the value not increased which is why there has been quite a fuss developing behind he scenes. Having got an EV car which is four years old it did look as though next years tax would be £190. We always expected tax to come in at some point. However the budget does say something that suggests EV cars must be taxed less than both ordinary ice cars and hybrids. I am just going to wait until the govt up dates it’s web site.

If you read the linked gov website in Hettie's Crew post it appears that if it was first registered before April 2017 then it will move to the first band which for 2024 is £20, if it was registered after April 2017 the it will move to the standard band which for 2024 is £190. This takes effect from March 2025.

The cost for the bands may/will change for 2025.

Our son has a Tesla & is facing the same situation. He will sorn it for a day before tax is due then retax at the zero rate for another year while he can. At least it will save a few bob.

That’s is a negligible amount to be honest. They were talking about £14 billion needed just to fix potholes 😳😳😳

Just for some balance here's an article on how our tax regeme pre budget encouraged polluting vehicles

From a group with vested interests.& what is "aquisition tax" ? never heard of it.
It’s just anoying as this should be to maintain the roads not to pay a Conservative Party debt
The fact that you believe it means the scum are winning,It is just all smoke & mirrors they just wish to increase gov.uk income. The debt,if it existed, was just the same as the "there's ****all left in the bank" last time this lot left office
Road tax is for better roads and not to fund debt
As above it is just income for the gov.uk & not for you to poke your nose in with sensible suggestions.
having said that, its always been wrong when a car can have a zero rated band but motorbikes don't. my bike is £111 a year at the moment.
Which just goes to prove that it is all "rope-a-dope" to encourage the mugs in then once on board give them a kicking.same as water meters ,etc.
Can you tax vehicles early for a year?
yes

not even worth the effort .It wouldn't fund onecounty let alone the whole of the uk

As far I can see looking at the DVLA there’s little change in motorhome road tax, if over a
3500kg van is classified as heavy goods vehicle, class AO, £190 from April 2025.
Hopefully I’m correct and hopefully the Gov don’t change the classification

When Sunak scrapped HS2 he said that the money would be spent on improving traffic infrastructure in the North. Later he decided that this included mending potholes in London 🙄
Now that HS2 is going to Euston, will those holes get filled or will they migrate to Manchester?

The way this country works it would take that figure to put traffic management in place to carry out the repairs, unlike Spain who place a robotic figure with hi vision on on the roadside waving a flag to advise the traffic to reduce speed

Is that the fault of the government funding... or the highways agency or the kowtowing to H&S, or the general British love of bureaucracy ?

Or that appalling driving standards on the UK busy roads that make it a really dangerous place for the contractors (to NOT work from what I see through miles and miles if closed lanes 🤬)

Thought this new huge road tax was for a new vehicle and a one off money grab…

Easily said by office workers, chucking out cones on the motorway is a wholly different environment…
