Red warning triangle in Spain

Anyone who buys one with the tracker on will be tempted to test it to make sure the light works ......

Mine just twist to turn on and don't have trackers as I haven't had the Spanish emergency services turn up at my front door when I tested them

To misquote Python, “nobody expects the Spanish emergency services!”

Here’s mine

Mounted it on a piece of wood and use a suction cup. It doesn’t have to be mounted on the roof. There are ones that transmit a signal when activate to the police mine dont but are legal
I can’t see the photo.

Simple idea place the beacon on top of a tin of baked beans and put the baked beans on the roof through the skylight.

This will give the beacon a bit of height to be above roof lights, solar panels et cetera
Buy one cheap one without geolocation and one with and place one at the front and one at the back of the van.

But only for this year !

It would be infinitely better if all vehicles had high-level emergency lights as part of the design activated by the Hazard light switch.
All cars since 2018 have to have an SOS button either manually activated or automatically activated when the airbags go off. Surely they could have created one system for the whole of Europe that does accidents and breakdowns.

OK, I admit I am baffled by this.

We are heading to Spain, this year, in April and May.

I assume I need a flashing beacon.

Can anyone who fully understands the requirement tell me…..

1 Where can I get a “basic” beacon, ie no geolocator?

2. Is such a beacon OK for this year, 2025 for a motorhome.

3. Will we require the geolocator version for a trip this year? (After this trip we have no intention of returning to Spain with the motorhome so the €50+ is an expense I will avoid if possible).

4. If delivery times for the geolocator versions are several months what do we do for this year?

Please help, my head hurts !😱

No you don’t need a flashing beacon for your trip this year.

Depends whether the Spanish authorities consider “tyre reinflator kits” as supplied by Fiat and others to “offer sufficient guarantees for the mobility of the vehicle”
As repair kits are now standard issue from manufacturers in place of a spare wheel for many cars & vans, I would hazard a guess that they meet the requirement of the regulation/ instruction.

It seems that it is not a legal requirement yet, albeit most people did buy them when it was announced a couple of years ago. The hi-viz jacket is a legal requirement, one for each occupant of the vehicle, and the plastic red triangles are still valid for this year.

Any hardware store or motor vehicle factor will sell you one. They are cheap.

Yes.

No, the law will (or not) change in 2026.
4. If delivery times for the geolocator versions are several months what do we do for this year?
Just forget you even read about them.

Have a whisky and contemplate the view outside.

I have an ordinary flashing beacon but will put off getting a networking one as long as possible in case they change their minds.
I'm going to be in Spain soon, I have a flashing beacon that's ok this year. I won't hurry to upgrade it. If it does come in, I'm sure eBay and Amazon will have them

I bought mine from a local Spanish hardware shop back in 2023 when I first learned of this incoming new rule. At that time it wasn’t conveyed that they MUST connect to the authorities and I couldn’t get one that did. I think it cost me 33€, so not a cheapy. I must admit it is very good and a great torch too, rechargeable battery on usb connection. Looks like I now must get another. Don’t like the idea though of not being able to test it without magnetic contact and that then alerts the authorities ☹️

The last provision should set a few cats amongst the pigeons………😊
It looks to me like any bike rack should not protrude beyond 10% of the length of the original chassis, so most do not comply ☹️ including mine which extends about 1m
This is what it says, any ounce who knows better please clarify my thoughts.

8.- TRANSPORTATION OF AUXILIARY VEHICLES

It is very common for motorhomes to transport auxiliary vehicles, usually bicycles, a moped, a small-capacity motorcycle or a Personal Mobility Vehicle. This practice is authorised provided that a bicycle rack or other removable element intended for this purpose is used and, when it protrudes from the floor plan of the motorhome, the following requirements are met in accordance with the provisions of article 15 of the General Traffic Regulations:

  • -
That it protrudes from the plan projection of the motorhome, at the rear, up to 10% of its length and if it were a single vehicle (indivisible load), 15%.
  • -
All appropriate precautions must be taken to avoid damage or danger to other road users, and the protruding end must be protected to reduce the effects of a possible friction or collision.
  • -
It must be marked using the V-20 sign referred to in Annex XI of the General Vehicle Regulations. This sign must be placed at the rear end of the load so that it remains constantly perpendicular to the axis of the vehicle.

In relation to the queries made to the DGT about the possibility of a motorhome towing a tourist vehicle, this possibility is not permitted in the General Vehicle Regulations, since it only contemplates that a towing vehicle can tow a trailer or semi-trailer (articles 13 and 26). Likewise, only "Public road assistance operators" may carry out the action of towing or dragging vehicles that have broken down on public roads or are immobilized for any other reason, as determined by Royal Decree 159/2021, of March 16, which regulates assistance services on public roads.

Without prejudice to the foregoing, the circulation of a set of vehicles consisting of a motorhome and a trailer or semi-trailer on which another vehicle is transported is permitted if the set meets the conditions for circulation on public roads,

It complies with the technical requirements set out in Regulation (EU) 2018/858 and UNECE Regulations 55 or 102 on mechanical coupling devices and also does not exceed the maximum authorised length for these sets, which is 18.75 metres for trailers and 16.50 metres for semi-trailers.

Think I’ll use a ‘dumb’ one and if required press the SOS button on my Garmin Inreach which someone will then call me to see what’s wrong or notify emergency services.
