Pay before we pick it up?

I was caught in the same situation with a dealer north of Manchester. I did end up paying in advance but only after checking online reviews which supported their honesty.
I did feel that I lacked any leverage and after a two hour train journey I found the air conditioning hadn’t been fixed. I could have left it for them but I was able to get it done at their expense locally. Not ideal but okay, as it happened!

If you bought a £50,000 motorhome and paid by dd card on sumup that's £850 straight of the bottom line. If you expect people to pay by dd card then you add it to the ticket price, happy with that?

No but you would expect them to get the best merchant deal for their type of customer.

Paying in advance only benefits the dealer as it puts them in a better position regarding if there is any problems.

I entirely agree which is why we didn't pay in advance, as for getting the best deal all you can do is compare rates, and go for what you think is the best, and they want you to sign up for 1-5 years, but in our experience they are all very similar, only big companies can negotiate lower rates.

Sumup, IZettle and the like sell you the machine, then you only get charged when you use it, unlike the traditional pos machines which cost rental every month used or not.

Your replies on this thread are quite aggressive.

I'd never ever buy a vehicle from you after your pompous replies.

I'm amazed you don't care.
Lol, what are you on about?
But then it sounds like I may have dodged a bullet by not having you as a customer?

When I collected my motorhome in 2017 I paid the balance of over £40000 on collection with a debit card and it wasn't a problem as long as you make sure there is sufficient funds in the account !

We did similar in 2019. I seem to recall that there was a £25k limit on the debit card, so we paid a sum by debit card the day before, to reduce the balance to just under £25k and paid this balance remaining on the day of collection

Haha,
Still trying to work out how I have been pompous and aggressive?!

I am also still trying to chew over in my head if calling someone pompous is just damn right rude!

We picked up our van yesterday. Should have been Tuesday, but when we tried to pay, the dealer said they only take cheques or banker's drafts, and didn't take debit cards for amounts over £1000.

Obviously a cheque was no good (and neither of us had a chequebook anyway :)), and the balance was more than £25K so I tried to organise payment over the phone. No chance! There's a limit of £10K via the operator unless "enhanced security measures" are in place. And all of this happened after the branches closed at 15:30.

So, we had to go into a branch (remember them?) the following morning and do the payment in person. On the bright side, due to CV-19, the faster-payment limit has been raised to £150,000 so we didn't need to pay for CHAPS (but this didn't come close to covering the cost of fuel going to/from the dealer).

First two vans we paid on the day - maximum on credit cards (I got my points!), & rest on debit card. When we bought our current van from Marquis in 2018, they insisted on bank transfer three days before pick up! We had got a good deal, & it was the van we wanted, but it did rankle a bit! Luckily they fixed the odd bits we found on pick up inspection with no trouble! Not sure I would go to them again tho - seemed to me that they were doing us a favour! 😒

We pick our van early September. One thing that put us off buying from a number of dealers, was the fact they wanted full payment a number of days before collection. What would happen if you turned up on collection day and refused the vehicle? Even worse, what would happen if they went bust between you paying and collection?

We paid a fairly high deposit (initial £500, once confirmed with factory a further £3500), balance on collection day using debit card......AFTER handover complete.

Contacted my bank, they said contact them again with less than a week to payment. They will put a marker on the account, but this doesn’t guarantee I won’t get a call to check it’s me doing the transaction. (y)

I agree with you, you are in business to make a profit ,also to be there for other customers, not a bankrupt, as my saying was when unrealistic requests were made "There's no sweetness in nothing "

Surely they told you that in advance?
