Pay before we pick it up?

Dealer phones me about picking up our new to us van on Saturday he wants us to pay now, not keen so l say will pay Saturday via debit card, he says they don't take dB cards as payment anymore and can't accept bank transfer on weekends as accounts dept only work week days so he can't confirm payment.

I want to see the van before paying for it to make they have done what the said they would do, I feel that knowing we haven't paid will concentrate their minds on getting it right for us to pick up

After a bit of a chat we decided to pick up next Tuesday. Think he's a bit peeved.
I had the same thing, but our dealership is only 5mls away and we’ve dealt with them for 4 yrs, checked van over before we’d paid, has always looked after us so wasn’t an issue. But I think that’s the norm now

Best to pay by credit card. I bought a Freelander from a garage, had problems with it. I tried to reject the vehicle, the garage didn’t want to know but I claimed and had all my money refunded through the credit card company.

Dealer wanted payment in advance for the MH ?
Would one walk into the road, without looking ?
I always try to evaluate one`s character and integrity by asking myself the question
"would I buy a used car from him?"
The people I have said yes to are still my friends.

The contract that we signed said that payment was due before we collected the vehicle in Germany, with CV-19 we couldn't go to Germany so it would be brought over on a Low Loader but we still had to pay before it left the factory:LOL: our dealer registered it with our details as soon as it was in the UK and then we picked it up about 6 weeks later, might have been different if we didn't trust the dealer;)

think you have done the right thing there. I would make sure everything is working right before handing over any money . Check all is working off hookup top.

I'm charged an 'item fee' for debit cards. Credit cards are charged at a percentage of the amount. This can range from 2% up to 5.5% for AMEX Corporate Cards. As mentioned above 'Section 75' only covers up to £30k.
Any transaction over £100 up to £30k is covered no matter how much is paid on your credit card. So as an example buy a £20k motorhome and leave a £250 deposit by credit card will give cover for the full £20k even though you may pay the remaining £19750 by bank transfer. Debit cards offer less protection so try to use a credit where possible. Section 75 is only an appeals process, the final decision is down to the bank. They will take the merchants side of the story into account as well as the consumers.

when you can do a transfer and its free to all
Only in the Uk. Only thing free here is cash:giggle:
His nose must be very long. What s load of crap he's saying.
I've been there and done that to the tune of a £22,000 loss to me.
In view of what many are saying I think if I was the OP I'b be checking that there is no 'stocking finance' still on the van?

Stocking finance would not be secured on the vehicles. It would be against the company.
Normally when a dealership provides finance as an agent for say Black Horse then Black Horse will finance their stock.

Our bank likes to know, in advance, if I'm going to make an "unusual" payment. So assuming that you don't make regular payments in the £10s of thousands - it might be an idea to let them know the details. The last time I bought a van - on the day, they still sent a text asking if it was OK. Recently, the same bank now sends a one time pass-code for every transaction.

Hi.
Do check it over slowly and carefully. Do not be hurried. Perhaps take a list of things to check.
Regards
p-c

Our bank has a limit of £24999.00 for an unadvised debit card payment or transfer. To cover a higher amount I have to inform the bank of which day and time it will happen and they then provide a two hour window. If I miss the window a phone call will move the time on. I have never had any problem with paying large amounts which have always gone through very quickly any day of the week/weekend. As said above I would never pay in advance of inspection.

Did you pay any of the sum on a credit card? If the sums are right section 75 can be your friend.

I think fairly standard in Europe to pay in advance . We were asked to because they will not register in your name until you have paid understandably. Also absolutely no problem with delivery on time but only lockdown for Covid delayed ( we didn’t pay till a few days before pick up ) In fact as we were given a specific date for delivery and they had to shut for Covid we received a letter by registered post in legal jargon saying that the delivery could not be on the given date . Apparently this had to be done legally or they were in breach of contract .

This dealer went bust and is under police investigation for near £6 million of fraud. You wouldn't believe what he'd been doing. WAS a reputable dealer with various franchises. Trust nobody when money is involved.

If you think that is easy, try buying an R-V, in Forida,! The cash Was transferred to my USBank in 3 tranches to avoid delays due to money laundering rules (fee x 3) then the transfer had to be authorised . In the meantime I a sat in a hotel in Jackson biting my fingernails waiting for the word that the transaction was good an we could go and collect the bus!. When I sold it it took 6 weeks to repatriate the money.

Having read all the posts on this thread can someone explain how you get your registration document ? Does the dealer register before pick up and do take the risk you don’t pay up and so is left with a technically second hand van .
Only bought one van in the U.K. before we left and that was a private sale

A big firm in Huddersfield tried that with me a couple of years ago, i resisted and said i would pay by debit card on the day, upon collection there was a list of niggles that annoyed me but as i had trips booked i accepted that they would sort it when i was back a couple of weeks later......i paid and took the van! IT TOOK THEM 18 MONTHS TO SORT OUT THOSE NIGGLES............Don't pay until you are 100% satisfied and don't book trips until it is on your drive. Good luck with your van (y)

They have told me to tax on the d

Ok . Not sure if that would work here . We have no road tax but have a registration document as you do

We checked over our new van, when it was delivered the work was not carried out to a moderate standard let alone a good standard. I paid the balance of our part exchange upon delivery , I will see if the dealer squirms when I sue him for the bill if he does not pay for the remedial, he can be sure I will if he does.
When people /dealers are recommended, one has to trust them, unfortunately to their peril sometimes.

VISA used to charge me 4% of what i put through the terminal, I'm sure i could have got better deals than that, the seller probably wants to save that 4%.
As for paying before seeing, i would not part with any cash (you could have paid cash, no ?) before i saw it, having said that we all have to pay first without seeing, that is what we all do now when purchasing on line.

The problem is most of us are dealing with a Salesman, he's going to tell you anything and promise you anything to get the sale, and by the time he gets back in the office he's forgotten half what he's told you.
I employed them when we had a kitchen company but I always went round after they had made a sale to find out what they had promised but forgotten to tell me. ::bigsmile:

When we bought our new motorhome we paid the remaining balance the day before we were going to collect it (March 2018), then it snowed all night, and we were unable to collect it for nearly 3 weeks! Not all the three weeks was due to snow, we had some family commitments we didn’t want to miss.

I think you should name and shame the dealer

Due to pick up our new van in September.

On day of pick up, full day (if required) for handover. Once we’re happy, then the balance can be paid by Debit Card and we drive away.........well that’s what we’ve been told to expect. :giggle:

We're collecting our van on Saturday too! I'm planning on paying by debit card and have already contacted the bank to make sure there's no limit on debit card transactions. I also asked if it was possible to put a note on the account to say what was going to happen, but apparently there's no provision for this.

When I bought mine transfer (private sale) half out of 2 different accounts same bank let half go through stopped the other 4 hours of messing about very embarrassing I felt as if as if I did not have the money.
Not only that they had been informed it was happening It was not until I informed them that I would not wait another '10 minutes' and I would stay on the phone having a chat with the CS agent until it was sorted. I did it on a weekday I was not a happy bunny.

Always keep in mind that you call the shots. The dealer wants to sell he wants your sale and make a profit from it. If you walk away he’s lost so you make the demands on him not the other way around.

Sapper,

That was exactly my experience. Took as long as we wanted for the handover, they put a couple of minor bits and pieces right, there and then, paid with a debit card and away we went. That was Camper UK at Lincoln.

We’re buying from Cara in Stoke-on-Trent. Going up (3hours from us) on 15th to check it over and point out where we want things putting, 7th September pencilled in for collection. (y)
