P&O Ferries told to stay in port

Is this a technicality. Can they sack you (cancel your contract) but allow you to reapply for your job on new terms and conditions.
British Gas did that with their engineers apparently

My last employer did claiming my post was redundant and the new post was different.

I sued and they settled out of court with a 5 year gag clause which they broke within 3 months so an extra pay out for me - the shinanigans didn't save the company which folded less than a year later :(

In 1977 I needed a 2nd engineers ticket for a Monrovian registered bulker, it cost me £1.50 from the Liberian Embassy in Liverpool, maybe certain dubious flag states still operate like this (I actually held a UK ticket at the time)

I was Engineering Manager for a ferry company for 10 years, although quite a bit smaller than P&O all of the Captains held a PEC for Cowes and Southampton but I don't think that Dover will hand these out without a fair amount of experience to the new crews
To be honest, I have dealt extensively in very recent times with Greek, Italian, Turkish and Croatian shipowners/managers and found their standards to be high. A lot of respect for the Greeks, especially. They really have thrown off their previously dodgy reputation and the Charterers are the people responsible with some fairly comprehensive ship vetting systems but the Greeks have ships in their blood - hard to describe without seeing a Greek speaking passionately about his fleet. Ships are in my blood too…….

Edit….. got carried away. As I said in an earlier post, how they are going to address that will be very interesting, but must have been one of the first things they considered

Carnival have had many thousands of my beer tokens over the the years through their Cunard and P and O cruises. Always found them impecable and likewise their international crew. On our last year Covid secure round the UK P and O cruise we spoke to a number of their charming 'below stairs' crew about how they coped with the Covid issue. They said that P and O/ Cunard cruised them all back en masse to their home countries and continued to pay them a retainer whilst skeleton crews remained onboard whilst moored off Weymouth and Torquay for the duration. It was heartening to hear and in sharp contrast to the recently witnessed actions of their ferry namesake!(y) They now have a few more beer tokens coming their way as the van is currently a distant dream!

The roughest looking ships I see when on the dock seems to be the ones that carry scrap and fertilisers

I gather my first company Denholms were known as the Glasgow Greeks 😁

It is horrendous how P&O have treated their staff and there are no excuses whatsoever for the way it is was carried out.
This is a clear case of unfair dismissal by way of Redundancy.
My wife won at a tribunal for the same thing. No consultation, No appeal process, Redundancy process not carried out fairly.
Because of the size of this redundancy there further things that a company has to follow.
Anyone with less then 2 years( I think) employment are not covered.

P&O will know all this, and would have Legal advice how they can mitigate these problems.
so probably they will make an enhanced redundancy payment on a contingent, that the individual signs that they wont pursue tribunal proceedings. (Im guessing!)
It will take at least 2 years to get to the Employment tribunal due to Covid delays. So individuals will be under immense pressure to sign with extra payment or risk not getting any extra in court and the stress involved!

I hope they dont get away with it and Government can sanction them and withdraw any contracts they have with them.

They certainly were. London Overseas freighters had a similar reputation

A few years ago I shared a flight and a subsequent meeting with one of the directors of Consolidated Marine Management. Better known as Latsis……. the meeting was looking to improve their already impressive management and auditing systems. Similarly a meeting with the Onassis group. Utter professionals

I agree about the way P&O have handled things as I stated in my post #160 but why make this political and try to apportion blame on the PM.
The question is how can a thread about 800 jobs being lost not venture in to politics.

I'm not saying it's his fault but the timing is incredibly iffy.

There’s politics and there’s Boris bashing, are you really suggesting that our PM arranged this with P&Os owners just a few days ago?

Nobody is bashing him, you're getting defensive on his behalf. Same as when anyone dares to suggest a problem may be due to Brexit.

I didn't suggest anything of the sort. I refuse to believe it didn't come up in their discussion though. Somethings a bit off with it.

Spot on. Most people have no idea of how much planning and effort that goes into this sort of thing.

Any excuse……

I’m not getting defensive on his behalf, I’m being realistic, but pointless continuing this discussion with you.

He almost certainly had no idea at all about it whatsoever. It is all done on a very strict need to know basis. The whole government will have been blindsided by this - Westminster leaks like a sieve

This is what happens when British companies are sold off to Foreign owners, no respect for people, no British taxes paid, even when trading in UK,
I fear for our public utilities, which are all foriegn owned now,
Very soon all British workers will be replaced by cheaper foreign labour, but as no taxes being paid here will be no money to pay benefits to unemployed,
UK won't seem so attractive to asylum seekers then will it ??

You know I'd TOTALLY forgotten about LOF 🙄, mate of mine was on one of their tankers early 90's for a while. At that time I was with "2 of fat & 1 of lean" T&J Harrisons.... really happy days 😁

A good few years ago a pal and several others were made redundant by BT. They were well pleased at the payment. Some retired early and others carried on doing the same work for BT but on contract through an agency and at better pay .
Some didn't need to work full time due to the redundancy lump sum and went off on several foreign holidays throughout the year.
I was one of the lucky ones at BT in July 1992 - 3 months away from my 50th birthday, I fell into the Early Retirement category. Having just adopted my 6 Yr old granddaughter (my reason for accepting the offer) I was able to change my flat for a house, with no mortgage, picked up my (very good) pension on my 50th and as Spriddler says had at least 2 holidays abroad every year. For the first year I was also unexpectedly entitled to Unemployment Benefit. I received a huge tax refund and it almost seemed that every post brought another cheque from some Government Department ! Although the capital was used to provide a good homelife for my granddaughter I have nevertheless enjoyed a very happy 30 years since and continue to do so.

I doubt however that the majority of P&O employees will be in the same position financially and my sympathies are with them in what will obviously be a very distressing time for them.

You and I share the same happy experience (now 24 years retired).

For low paid staff under £30k it’s actually harder for companies to do now. When we left the EU freedom of movement stopped so companies can’t recruit low paid Polish workers and replace their British staff, well not easily anyway. Under EU rules White Knight in Halifax managed to replace their shop floor workforce over a period of time with Polish staff, such that all the signs in the factory were in Polish.
Now work permits are needed unless they are jobs over £30k or in a special occupation such as fruit pickers.
P&O have sneaked in under Maritime law by having their vessels registered abroad.
