P&O Ferries told to stay in port

I believe lord justice Sheen made the comment that the organisation was riddled with the disease of sloppiness from the top down.
In all my years in health and safety. This has to be one of the most damming statements ever.
Spot on there. The report makes harrowing reading.

It wasn't a 'foreign country' they were part of the British Indian army before independence & before that the East India company. They have always been classed as part of the British army for which to serve requires you to be British citizen , citizen of Irish republic or from a commonwealth country with indefinite leave to remain
interesting geography perception you have. In which part of the Commonwealth is Nepal?

I suppose in a similar way you would describe British soldiers in Afghanistan as invaders and the Taliban as freedom resistance fighters?

I was having a discussion yesterday with one of my friends who is a Thames harbour pilot and the other ferry companies are roundly cursing P&O as they have been using third country labour for years. If P&O won’t back down then the thinking is that they will simply shut the business and cut their losses by selling off the fleet, as simply closing and re-opening as a phoenix company will still tie to DP World and still not resolve the issue. Worst possible outcome for everyone but apparently confirmed by the above

Singapore ranks 158 out if 180 in human rights.
Singapore has one of the highest income inequalities in the world.
Singapore has the highest ratio of millionaires per capita in the world.
Singapore has become a significant tax haven.
You say that my comparison with Monaco is fallacious!!
On the other hand there is an excellent social security system.
A benevolent dictatorship springs to mind keeping everyone in their place and under control.
All this from Wikipedia, of course I have never been there so have no personal experience but have to make opinions by reading and listening to others opinions and hope that published figures are reasonably accurate.
It seems to me that the Economy of Singapore is based on dealers and middlemen of which I have in general a very low opinion.
If you have actual facts rather than generalisations to disprove any of the above I will be happy to be corrected.
We had a 5 day holiday in Singapore just before covid, happily wandered everywhere late at night, never once felt worried, place spotless, no beggars. Yep it was made very clear there would be no issues - lovely as a tourist but slightly intimidating!

I don’t have any problems with that. Been to Singapore loads of times both at sea and in the marine business and very safe and very well organised. Their country, their rules. Same as Switzerland where I lived for 3 years. No issues with it at all.

I lived in Qatar with my family for a while. We felt very safe until the regime fell out with Bahrain and I drove home one afternoon to find a Rapier missile parked at the end of our road!

As a visitor, no disagreement.
Trouble is that for citizens, the choices aren't quite so clear cut... actually it is, they have no choices (or very few).

Maybe the majority are happy with that 🤷‍♂️

They are. I know a lot of people who live there and are very positive about it. I cannot see why other people apparently have an issue with another country and are critical of their own rules.
Anybody who thinks that living in Singapore or Switzerland is an issue should try living in Saudi Arabia. I’ve lived in all three Singapore (only for 2 months restructuring a business) and I know my choice.……… everything in life is a compromise. Singapore or Toxteth?

On my second BA flight into Qatar I got talking to the nice lady in the next seat. We got around to the restrictions imposed by the regime, and she said she was looking forward to her English breakfast the next morning. I asked where she got the bacon from? She replied with "It's in my shoes, between two pieces of cling film..."

Being an enterprising chap, I looked around for an alternative, and I discovered tinned smoked veal from Holland, and it was fabulous and at sensible money. Silly me, I told my work colleagues about it and the local price tripled!

Some of the things we used to get up to out there would make people’s hair curl….. happy days

As long as they have democratic freedom including fwee to oppose government policies I see no problem if that's how they set their laws. The only thing being I strongly suspect they don't have that freedom in which case you've got to ask if that's what the vast majority want why are their leaders afraid of democracy

You need to live there not look there before making judgements. It is very clear that you don’t like the place very much. Have you been there? Have you lived there? Or is it just what you read about the place?

I have been there a long time ago. You sound like you have been more recently do they have freedom of speech freedom to protest etc. If not then are they any different to any other dictatorship or communist regime? I don't like repression by any government right wing or left.

Yes. A long time ago is not a couple of years ago and I note that you have not lived with the people there, with whom I am still in regular contact. They have rules but hardly onerous ones. Switzerland is a little different - I was investigated when my parents stayed for more than a week, but not an issue. Their country their rules and in Switzerland everything is put to referendum in each canton. Democracy

You didn't really answer the question. I'm pretty sure I could find people in Russia I could live with who thought Putin was a really good bloke and really was peacekeeping in Ukraine. It wouldn't make me view the Russian regeme any differently they won't allow democracy as they are afraid of letting the people decide. Do Singapore allow freedom of speech freedom to protest and free elections?

You clearly have preconceived ideas and did not address my post. You have not lived there, you do not know. End of conversation
