P&O Ferries told to stay in port

I've heard that the Government have reached some agreement with the French and that Priti Patel is to deliver the announcement

If it is true then I hope everyone avoids them whatever they charge (assuming they will cut prices) and support UK jobs, of course if it is linked to Brexit like someone said above this will exclude those who voted to leave as they can reap the benefits if they wish:censored:

Probably owned by some Russian Oligarch now sanctioned.

Just tried to book the hovercraft but not running.......yet 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

ITV News understands that all P&O Ferries staff have been made redundant with immediate effect.

The company is set to use an agency to keep their ferries running and current staff will be able to apply to the agency for work.

Expecting escalation by seamens unions...

Yip, DP World.
Any UK politician visiting \ visited there recently?:whistle2::getmecoat:
This will have been planned for many months. And it was AbuDhabi emirate and Saudi, not Dubai Emirate. Surprised (and impressed from a purely business security point of view) that nothing leaked out.

It took me and my team several months to plan a "restructuring" of our work in the middle east which did not involve further employment of European inspectors. Was I proud of what I had done? It was my job and if I did not do it, someone else would. I managed to find quite a few suitable employment elsewhere within and outside the company so satisfied I did the best I could under the circumstances. Life happens....

Please leave Brexit out of this. This is a disgusting way to treat a workforce. Devastating for the employees and their families. This kind of treatment by British companies was happening long before we left the EU.
As for cutting prices….I very much doubt it.
Looks like all staff sacked with immediate effect and replaced with cheaper foreign crew. Barstewards.
Barstewards
Doesn’t even begin to describe what I think
of P & O

I was quoting a post above where it was pointed out that without Brexit this would not have been possible, so if true then you reap what you sow so not disgusting at all! I also agree that it is terrible and we should boycott them henceforth if it turns out to be true.

They could've left it til tomorrow as I bet the passengers being returned after a couple of hours on their outward sailing will be busy filling in their Passenger Locator Forms.

This happened to me in 1985 when I was deep sea in the Merchant Navy, worked out quite well for me personally working through an agency. I wonder why P&O have waited so long. Bear in mind that the Merchant Navy have a long history, going back hundreds of years, of employing foreign crews. A problem in recent years is that qualified, experienced, UK staff, have been increasingly hard to source, young people don't like the work.

You spelled the word wrongly...

Two threads running on this issue.
I've just watched it on ITV news. All staff are being made redundant and replaced with agency staff. So! After that announcement, how long before they resume services ? They must have a plan to minimise disruption and I guess Permanente staff are let go over time so replacement staff can be trained and replaced without disruption. I thought P&O were French but clearly not as this would not bee allowed to happen, must be be a UK company.

Three threads now

(It's déjà-vu all over again, again, Rodney).

Are Abu Dhabi and Dubai not two of the Emirates making up UAE with Abu Dhabi holding Presidency and Dubai Vice Presidency?

On the North Sea routes all the catering staff were philipinos anyway , have been for for 40 years.

There are more than 2 Emirates but the fact is that DP world are Dubai and Abu Dhabi is a fair old way down the road and a different country to Dubai

P&O were way back when Peninsular & Orient Steam Navigation Co a major player on Iberian trade.

The group was broken up in the noughties with the container services being bought by Maersk (Danish) the world's largest container shipping line. The ferry part sold to Dubai World.

I wasn’t having a go at you Michael T. Apologies if I came across that way. But I still think it is disgusting.

As I said "two of" the Emirates. Are they not "linked" centrally as part of UAE broadly similar to, say USA?

Yes, my best mate until recently worked for a Glasgow based management company as Old Man on one of their VLGCs - to have a Yorkshireman describe them as "tight" was quite something. He took early retirement due to falling standards, though he had no criticism of the actual staff who were a mix of eastern European and Asian both officers and crew

Possibly, but they are different countries not different states under a federal system, and it is irrelevant as Dubai has no oil. AbuDhabi do, which is why he never went to Dubai.
