Nationwide Flex Account not covering over 7 meters from 1/3/22

Mine is 3.2 also it's a good get out for insurance company on a expensive repatriation of vehicle. As they will have to measure to work out which can take it back. IE height of bridges tunnel or ferry.
Praps I'm missing the point but the height restriction problem applies in the UK too. Having driven 15' 6" tall lorries in the UK I can assure you it can be an absolute pain to get places.

UPDATE FLEXPLUS COVER

Letter I received this morning

Dear Mr Upton,

Following up on my email of last night and having worked through your issue with my team, we have positive news for you. And, if I may, a request for a little more advice from you on how best to reassure other members who own large motorhomes.

First, a little bit of background.

We periodically review our contract for Breakdown Assistance through FlexPlus to ensure we continue to give members the best service and value that we can. We had agreed a change to the AA on the basis that the cover would be at least as good, if not better, than the existing provider.

The motorhome dimensions question you raised was something we had identified through negotiations with the AA as needing enhancement from their initial proposal. Therefore, motorhomes of 7.5t, 8m in length and 3m height (as per your specific query) WILL still be covered. This will be confirmed in the communications and new policy documentation which FlexPlus members will receive from us in a couple of weeks’ time.

Given there is no degradation in cover for members, our plan has these communications going out a month before the switch to the AA. If there had been any negative alteration in the cover we would clearly have given more notice to enable members to have sufficient time to make alternative arrangements if required.

However, we did need to flag on our website that cover would be provided by the AA ahead of these communications to existing members to ensure that people buying FlexPlus for the first time were aware.

Your question prompted us to discover a mistake in the information on the website regarding large motorhomes as it was taken from an early version of the policy NOT the finally agreed cover.

Thank you so much for alerting us to that issue. We are currently updating the web site.

Also, in going back to the AA as a result of your query, not only have we been able to confirm that the AA will indeed cover vehicles of the specifications you outlined but that they will now cover ANY length of vehicle for recovery in the UK (subject to the other dimension restrictions) for our members.

Given the concerns you also alerted us to around the AA’s ability to recover such vehicles, we have had further reassurance from them that they will do so even if it means having to use a specialist 3rd party if their vehicles aren’t suitable.

So just to confirm for you, in terms of length, the cover will have no limit in the UK and be 8m for Europe, and for weight the cover for motorhomes will be 7.5 tonnes both in UK and Europe. Other dimensions will be ‘at least as good’ as our existing policy, including having no height restriction (vehicles of course will still need to be within any legal limits).

I apologise for the confusion this oversight with the website has caused but hope you are happy with the action we have taken to put things right.

Now for the request given your evident understanding of the motorhome owner community!

You mentioned in your email that many other members with large motorhomes are frustrated by this change. As explained above, they will see the correct information in a couple of weeks when they receive their new policy documents. However, if you have any suggestions on the best way for us to confirm the right information to these members in the interim to save them from additional hassle or concern, we would be very keen to hear. For example, if there are any fora where you have seen this discussed, we could investigate responding directly.

Once again, thank you very much for contacting us, and thank you for what I hope will continue to be a longstanding membership of Nationwide.

Kind regards,

Sara

OK. Just read the new terms and conditions. Seems fine to me now ref dimensions and weights. Anyone else agree?

Bit concerned about this General Exclusion in Section 2e "A second or subsequent recovery, after your vehicle has been recovered following a breakdown". Have I misunderstood it?

I think they want to take you to go a garage and have it fixed or then taken home; or they will take you home to a local garage; there will be some wriggle room if you are near your or an acceptable to you destination as that gives them time to organise things. They don't want you to decide after going to the garage that the issue is fixable by yourself and you subsequently break down with the same or similar issue that the garage would have undertaken.

Terms now updated

  • Maximum Vehicle Weight for Motorhomes ONLY: 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight
  • Maximum Vehicle Width: 8ft 3in (2.55m) which constitutes the overall width of the vehicle
bodywork excluding mirrors, measured at the widest points.
  • Maximum Vehicle Weight for Motorhomes ONLY: 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight

Your scenario is what I assumed they meant but I don't like it when they leave things up to interpretation. Thanks for your input.

Just opened a Flex account to take advantage of recovery and travel insurance.
That means my 23 year old daughter is left without breakdown insurance after March when our RAC runs out … they cover her as she’s living at home whilst doing her postgrad year.
Any ideas for cheap single person breakdown cover?

Open the account in joint names, You get a card and your daughter also gets a card. If you are only using the account to pay £13 per month for the breakdown cover so both would be covered.

Nothing about maximum length?

Also, in the UK section it says
"Breakdown assistance is only available for cars, light van, campervan, motor caravan, minibus, trailer, motorhomes, vans, minibuses or motorcycles"

But in the European section is says on Page 21

"Any type of vehicle or trailer not mentioned in these terms and conditions is not covered. 1. Vehicle types we cover: a. Private cars, light vans, campervans, motor caravans and minibuses Cover is available for the vehicles listed, providing they meet all the vehicle specification criteria set out under the policy."

Now, I may be pedantic but they dropped the use of the word Motorhome from the UK cover???

Nope it says Motorhomes in 2 section D

yes, you're only agreeing with me, Im saying it IS mentioned in the UK (which is section D of 2), but it is NOT mentioned in the EU section at all.

???? Lenny HB I don't understand what that's supposed to be saying?

Rewind Lenny HB you are interpreting my sentence

"Now, I may be pedantic but they dropped the use of the word Motorhome from the UK cover???"

as if I was saying they dropped it from section 2. In the context of the whole message referring to the EU cover on Page 21, they have dropped the use of the word motorhome which is used in the UK section.

That's what I meant by it, but can see now why we appear to be at cross purposes

Just had a call from Nationwide re. my complaint about the Flexplus breakdown cover, which as we know, they 'dropped the ball', apologizing for the 'half cocked' (my words!) nature of the announcement and the fact that they got it wrong.

Cover seems to have been enhanced and the correct information published. So credit where credit is due for following through on my complaint. So well done Nationwide, unlike my current contract marathon with Virgin Media but I won't bore you with that!

The maximum vehicle height of 3m for vehicles breaking down in Europe will affect some.
My unit is 3.2 taking the satellite into account.
The current policy does not mention a height restriction for motorhomes but it does under "all other vehicles"
Don't know where you got that from there is no mention of height in the policy.

As per Lenny HB I was told on my call that the height restriction had been removed i.e an enhancement.

It was from the the Nationwide website before they updated.
I did contact them and they assured me that it would be removed and the cover would be identical

Yes had my call from the Nationwide this afternoon. No issue and all is well. Did you have the lady working from home who's dog kept barking. She was so apologetic

PJGWiltshire, no barking dog for me! When I mentioned about people being away in Spain etc. she was very apologetic.

Still all is resolved now!

Just received a copy of the new March 2022 policy from Nationwide. All good and no worries for Moho's upto 7.5 tonne and under 8M. No mention of height restriction. (y)
