Nationwide Flex Account not covering over 7 meters from 1/3/22

I have just been shunted round the houses with the AA.
The discussion ended amicably with the person saying that the AA have numerous contracts with companies and manufacturers; the contact had not seen the Nationwide contract as that would only happen when it went live; as each individual contract was different then it was up to the Nationwide to decide the criteria.
Complaining to the Nationwide is the way forward.
I will do it through my account.

Searching for motorhomes brings this up:

Section D: Vehicle Specifications
Breakdown assistance is only available for cars, light van, campervan, motor caravan, minibus, trailer, motorhomes, vans, minibuses or motorcycles (including quads and trikes) which meet the specifications set out below.
Please note that “car, van, minibus or motorcycle” does not include, amongst other things, electric pavement vehicles, electrical wheelchairs, bicycles (including electric bicycles), any vehicle which cannot lawfully be used on the public highway and/or any non-motorised vehicle.
  • Maximum Vehicle Weight: 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) gross vehicle weight
  • Maximum Vehicle Weight for Motorhomes ONLY: 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight
  • Maximum Vehicle Width: 8ft 3in (2.55m) which constitutes the overall width of the vehicle
bodywork excluding mirrors, measured at the widest points.
  • Maximum vehicle length: 7m (23ft)*
*These dimensions will be calculated taking into account anything attached to your vehicle and any trailer or caravan, including but not limited to towing equipment, any carriers or racks (e.g. bike or luggage), or anything else attached to the vehicle or the carriers/racks.
Ah yes, you are right Im wrong, I copied the link that I thought was current when it fact it is the Britannia one.

So we're back to sub 7m :-(

Just contacted Nationwide and logged a complaint as change of breakdown supplier I thing the more that do this the more they may re consider the changes. I was asked if I had received any update from them which I have not. Have recorded as a complaint to reconsider the change
same here, the more complain the better i suspect.

The AA on twitter just told me they have no restrictions on length in UK but have avoided the fact I was specifically asking in reference to the new nationwide contract and pointed out their section D which states

Maximum Vehicle Weight: 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) gross vehicle weight • Maximum Vehicle Weight for Motorhomes ONLY: 7.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight • Maximum Vehicle Width: 8ft 3in (2.55m) which constitutes the overall width of the vehicle bodywork excluding mirrors, measured at the widest points. • Maximum vehicle length: 7m (23ft)*

Yes worth bringing up with the Nationwide that there are no length restrictions in the AA standard contract (no need to mention any geographical limitations :) ).
I am due a phone call at some stage.

The only means of direct contact to the Nationwide is through the Complaint forum. I logged a complaint and now have been contacted by someone. I have replied to them via email outline the confusing information within their information document. I await a response and will update.

I have been keeping up with this thread and have been investigating this issue myself.

After being on the phone and contacting Nationwide through the comments page I have now received a reply from Ashley Manning-Senior Customer consultant(long job title) After a couple of tries I have now been informed that the new insurance will NOT cover over 7meters after Ashley confirmed with the AA.He also gave me a phone number if I wished to contact them direct to confirm myself.
Looks like I ,and others, will need to obtain breakdown cover elsewhere now.

Need to keep in complaining. Enough shouting they may do a re think if it’s going to cost them money

Turn it into a complaint - certainly if like many you didn't have a clue until this thread came up.

Any mention of the 3.5T weight limit?

No particular mention of the 3.5T weight limit during my investigation but the new document states from reading through it that Motorhomes only, the weight limit is 7.5T.But vehicle length restricted to 7meters.Which is the issue I was looking into as Motorhome is 7.48 meters long but within the 7.5T at 3.8T.

Indeed I have a response from Nationwide informing me to contact the AA. This time the AA rep then lists the lengths as per the Nationwide policy. He is sending messages to senior AA to help clarify. Excluding the 8m length for the MH point I also covered the point that the length of a vehicle is 7m in the policy including any towed trailer (Caravan) pointing out that there are probably no caravans and cars totalling under 7m including A frame. At this stage complaining to Nationwide may trigger peers to be to look at what has been agreed as it appears some in the AA understand the lengths to be the old policy lengths and others are now quoting the new policy lengths.

Been with nationwide flex plus at £13 a month for the last 5 years. £750 and all I’ve had is a jump start ?? Ok some people may have had more but seems like easy money to me and they want to end it 🤔

Think I will stick with my Britannia rescue policy direct through csma boundless £110 per year incl euro cover and husband and wife cover motirhome covers up to 7 5 t

I have just lodged a complaint, the agent said that they would have contacted me..soon. I am now on a list for a phone call from someone. I will close my account that I have held for 20 odd years.

From looking at the policy documents, vehicles over 7m are no longer covered at all. Motorhomes under 7m and under 3.5T GVW are covered in the UK and EU but motorhomes over 3.5T are still covered in the UK.

The Coops Can I ask when the Nationwide agreed for personal travel insurance with declared medical conditions not covered but ok if you fell etc. We have been with them a few years but now they will cover me but will not cover hubby even though we asked for no cover for his illness but maybe if we were involved in an accident etc.

This is bad news, by coincidence I had to call on them yesterday, first time ever, as my car developed a computer fault and wouldn't unlock the steering, mechanic arrived within thirty minutes so brilliant service. I too will be raising a complaint but suspect there will not be enough of us with vans over 3500 kgs to make a difference.
Complaint sent!

As a previous poster has said, panic over. Nationwide have replied by email to a friend of mine and they have confirmed that the 7 meter max length in the new terms and conditions is an error and that they will be contacting all flex plus customers in due course. So it's still going to be 8 meter.

I look forward to hearing from them, it seems a tad confused - perhaps it a fallout from the Christmas shambles!

From reading on another forum it seems that Nationwide have printed it wrong and cover will be the same as now. All account holders should have an email from them after the 17th January confirming this

From a motorhomer on a group on Facebook - the letter they received from Nationwide confirming this situation was an error on the policy info. - in case it helps:

I have just looked at the policy for flexi plus cover and it say's the following.
  • Vehicles must not exceed any of the following dimensions when fully loaded:
    • Caravans and trailers – 8 metres in length (including A-frame)
    • Motorhomes – 8 metres in length or 7.5 tonnes in weight
    • All other vehicles – 7 metres in length, 2.3 metres in width, 3 metres in height or 3.5 tonnes in weight
See policy document for details on vehicle eligibility.

Well for anybody having complained and not getting anywhere and thus will be looking for breakdown cover for Europe.
I have just got an on line quote with Brittania(who in fact are LV) who are the company presently used by Nationwide. The yearly quote was £142. This covers upto 8m and 7.5 ton. Overall a couple of pounds cheaper than the Nationwide account per year. Yes you do not have travel insurance or mobile phone cover. In my case I only opened this account for the breakdown insurance I have the other cover on my main bank account.
