Motorhome stolen of my drive!

Sorry to hear this.
Possible consolation: If you are insured for market value, you might well get back more than it cost in 2016!
I'm with Comfort too. Let's hope they pay ok. Market value would be good, getting it back better. It was such a good van, no trouble, nearly immaculate and much loved.

Comfort were very good with my (admittedly much smaller) claim

John has just reminded of the time our friends came back from holiday. They live in an off the track house on a sleepy Somerset village. Their Jaguar was taken off the drive while they were still unpacking and had gone in for a cup of tea or something. They have a long steep drive unseen from road so not opportunistic, someone followed them.

If the keys were in the insurance company may well have not paid out

I nearly had my keyless Ford stolen a couple of weeks ago.
According to the police there are loads of Fiestas being stolen in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire
They failed because I keep my keys in the special anti clone wallets - but then they smashed the drivers side window.
Luckily a neighbour heard them and scared them of. They were in the process of trying to find the OBD socket which is so easily accessible behind a little drop down hatch.
The standard alarm horn is so pathetic especially inside such a sound proof car no one is going to hear it.
I've now had to started fitting an old steering wheel lock and fitted a massive new alarm horn.

I am confident I do have a fail safe anti theft device on the van but for the sake of belt and braces I have fitted a steel OBD cover.
I need to make some thing for my car now

Before I fitted the anti tamper screw

Not trying to steal your vehicle or anything :) , but I might fit one of these to our MH , but can they not just be unbolted with an Allen key , or torx key ?
Or is that a "special" bolt

We live in a bungalow, the bedroom is next to the drive, so my head was just a few metres away. Didn't hear anything! Zonked out after 11 hours of driving back from France I guess. Must have been professionals. Just about to knock on neighbours doors to see there's any CCTV.

No, penny-wise, pound stupid. It'll help your sales anyway Eddie, so some good will come out of it! You can be sure I will. Will I get a discount? Just joking, wife says I've got a funny sense of humour!
I asked as genuinely you would be amazed how many time people forget that they have tracking systems fitted! Yes of course you'll get a discount and when you get it back, (think positive) PM me and we'll help you jump the waiting list as "
lighting does strike twice"

Insurance claim now in, Comfort handed me straight over to Axis insurance, their underwriters, who said no hire options are offered by Comfort, £200 excess on contents, £200 on something else, can't remember what, up to 8 days for valuation, taking into account mileage. I was talking to them about rarity value, where am I going to find a good van like that in to the high season? Neighbour has offered me the loan of a car (and bought us some flowers)! So there's some good.

That's very decent of you. I'll be around there for sure. One way or another.

Do they ask how many keys it came with when you bought it? No? Then how can they after,? Mine came with 1 remote. I now have 4 sets.

Really needs to be the locking type.

When in the UK I use every.
Obd lock is always on ,
Clutch claw,
Steering lock
Double locking external deadlocks on cab doors,
B pillar to cab doors internal 12mm stainless bolts. Rear door and side door have external dead locks. Rear doors have internal top and bottom shoot bolts .
Side door has upper internal
" anti,-peel" bars.
Tracker
Drivers door is the only door with any type of key operated lock but cannot be opened until internal door bolts are removed from inside the rear of van.
Van is always deadlocked access is only possible through side door using remote.
Alarm.

Thanks, you're quite right. Stupid aren't I.
No. Just unlucky.

There are plenty of reports of m/hs with more security than yours being stolen.

I would echo the suggestion of having a Vanbitz alarm system fitted. Fantastic customer service and a great product.

Remember they will make you an offer, and it is just that - an offer. Negotiate. I did this with a car, gave 3 examples of similar (same make & model) for sale and successfully got them to increase their offer.

Alan Kerr are advertising a very similar one on this forum, for £41,299, which is more than I paid for mine. Same age, etc. So I have asked them can they help with the valuation negotiations. Not hear back, only just posted it

Out of interest... can you see the van from Google maps? Streetview or overhead? It might be that the night they came to look for it just so happened to be the night you came back.

I don't know, haven't looked just yet. It doesn't change much I suppose, how they found it. They wanted it, they took it. Such is life nowadays.

Certainly consider the excellent VanBitz products.

Also consider a Ghost II Immobiliser - it works directly on the CAN data unit and is now TESSA verified.

No keys, fobs or anything else - it can't be hacked and the van won't start unless you key in your unique code (user-set) using (up to 20!) buttons on the steering wheel, door etc.

The thief won't know it's there until he tries to start the van - which immediately cuts out. And then it's necessary to go through a VERY, VERY involved process to get things back to the key code entry.

I think the only way my van could be stolen is on a flatbed loader.

Oh yes, and one thing the underwriter did say, very helpfully. There WILL be an increase in your premium next year! I'm thinking, I shall be 80, what sort of increase will that be, then? Maybe my motorhoming days are over?

I have to say I've checked outside the window a few times today to see if the van has just as magically reappeared. Unfortunately it has not!
So sorry you haven't heard anything about your van. It's a nightmare for you.

Gina

I find having an easy way to disable it bu removing something is a good way to stop it being stolen. Theifs are prepared for alarms, obd locks etc etc . But they dont carry spare parts with them 😉

Just keep it a secret what you remove
