Morocco 2019

Malaga to San Sebastian. Respect!

Have to try the cider spot when next up there.
Well worth it, a great looking restaurant up the hill and a bar at the bottom of the hill , a great call

Just to let you know that we haven’t disappeared without trace! We are currently at the free parking just north of Ain-Beni-Mathar. We drove up from Figuig today.
After we left Tafroute we headed east and spent one night in Tata at ‘Le Relais des Sables’. Then onto ‘Camping la Palmerie’ at Foum Zguid. Spent 2 days there and Rachid the proprietor cooked us a Chicken and Lemon Tajine which was delicious - one of the best we’ve had! One night in Zagora and then on the N12 to M’ssici and a ‘hidden gem’ at Camping Azurite, family run and very laid back. The ‘Patron’, when we came to pay and asked if he needed to see passports said ‘We are in the desert. No Police’ ! Fair enough :cooler:
Then to Camping Hakkou at Aoufous another gem recommended by a German lady we met in Sidi Kaouki. Small town an easy cycle into town (no hills ) Stayed only one night but would definitely stay longer if we come this way again.
One night at Ferme Abdul at Mengoub, on a farm and very quiet. Then onto Hotel Ziguig.
Tomorrow we plan to hit the Marjane at Oujda and then to the site in Saida maybe for a couple of days as we’ve made up some time but depends on the weather which doesn’t look great:( Then via a couple of stops to Chefchaouen, again depending on the weather.
Last stop Ksar Sghir before ferry next Friday.
Today has been decidedly chilly :cold: Forecast is for 3degrees overnight:cold::cold: Might have to dig out the winter night shirt and socks :Eeek:

Stop press! Just been moved from the free parking into the town for ‘our security’! Just as well we hadn’t got any gin

Our 2pm sailing was also non existant.
Can recommend the chicken sandwich from cafe at the booking in area!
Nor ours. According to the guy at the port the 2pm acciona is rarely on. FrS are much better. I think we will be back on FRS next time.

OH..............................we're going for the 2pm sailing tomorrow ?????

But given the ferocious winds in Martil today and predictions to get worse at the weekend,we'll be happy to sail sometime tomorrow....................shhh don't tell them.

Peter, first off, thanks for the kind words - not necessary but always appreciated.

For everyone else, we met Peter on the ferry from Tanger-Med to Algeciras yesterday - who was near the front of the queue on the quay when we joined it............ Now read on and just keep a watch on the times!

Having decided to miss Asilah and go for the 5.00pm ferry, we arrived at checkin at 4.05pm with the board saying checkin closed. About to have an investigate we were accosted by an "agent" who told us the 5.00pm was the last ferry of the day, all others cancelled today and tomorrow due to the weather. However he said, "just because you are British" (and he should also have said gullible) "I can get you on the last ferry". He took me to the side door of the checkin office, took my documents and after some shilly shallying around handed me our boarding passes - and asked for 100 dirhams (for my brother in the office). Okay, thinks I, probably worth it, but at that point Bren had been to the bureau de exchange and changed all our dirhams into Euros, which she had in her hand. To my deepest embarrasment I managed to give him the 50 note - yes €50 rather than the €10 she was also holding. I put it down to a mental lapse due to the rush, but he must have thought it was Christmas!

Okay, so we were on. Down to Immigration, we'd somehow "lost" the yellow forms so the nice policeman told us to go back to the gate and get new ones, which we filled in then went back to him. Customs clearance was dead easy, didn't even want to talk to us. Then we found the original yellow forms - talk about idiot Brits - not our best day!

Onto the quayside, last motorhome in the queue as promised. Until 3 others came in after us. At 5.00pm there was no sign of a ship - the 3 others which had been berthed had gone. At 6.00pm a ship hove into view. At 7.00pm we started loading. At 8.15pm the ship finally sailed and we enjoyed a nice chat with Peter and his wife on a remarkably smooth crossing. Docked at 9.45pm, we managed to get a flyer by driving around all the other idiots waiting patiently for someone else to move. By 10.00pm we were parked up at Carlos', walked and fed the dog then into McD's for something to eat - didn't matter what we were starving!

Peter had been on the quayside since 1.00pm!

We subsequently worked out that the 1300, 1500 and 1700 ferries must have all been merged into the 2000, as it wasn't full. Moroccan ferry companys at their best.

In Ferry sue after easy customs. On behalf of Mena and myself, it was again great to meet up with the few fellow Funsters we encountered on this trip. We thought this might be our last trip to Moroc. We n9w think differently. Great trip this time around and as per our previous trips, no fines and wing mirror's intact. Now for some fun in Spain.

Terry we had actually been on the quayside since 11am and a couple of early bird friends had arrived even earlier. We were told there was no afternoon boat and the check in for the 5pm boat did not even open until 2pm. And as you said we did not actually leave until 8.15pm

We had the usual requests to get us to the front of the queue for a price and the threat that they would only be taking 10 motorhomes on the next boat anyway. So you definitely need to be first in the queue. All this stuff about check in being closed also seems another scam.It was the only time during the 90 day trip that we felt "let down or cheated" by the procedures and hassle for baksheesh.

The main learning point is that all this was down to one company.......Trasmed.............They are the cheapest because they only have one boat that goes back and forth. Most of the other companies have two and during the day(waiting) we saw FRS and Balearia boats arrive and depart with the "more experienced travellers on board"

There are other threads running about negative experiences travelling back and having to wait all day and we would never use Trasmed again.

Since found to be good to check state of departures...................you will see Trasmed only list an 11am and a 5pm departure.................which is fine if you know that to be the case.

But anyway all done now, great first trip and we'll be back..................... Inshallah !!!

We used the FRS Tarifa to Tangier service the previous twice and it was great, smaller boat so much easier and it ran more or less on time. We will probably use it again next time. The only issue is that if you re over 2.8metres you turn round just inside the doorway

I think a few words with Carlos and his crew may be in order - I'll give it a thought. But I would guess we were originally put on Trasmed because it was the cheapest at the time but after this experience if we do return I'll be asking about different ferry companies.

But no worries, like everyone else we had a great time so thanks to everyone we met. We did say at the start that this would probably be our last visit to Morocco, but our minds have been changed. Yes Morocco has changed and is rapidly joining the 21st century, but there'll be enough of it left for some years yet to avoid losing its character.

So I'm signing off this thread now and planning our next couple of weeks before we return home.

Take care everybody.

Terry, Brenda and Jamie.

Price is always going to depend on the route - there are 3 from Algeciras.

For open return to Tanger-Med the price was €200. although I negotiated a Funster discount of 10%.

We paid €180 for the open return just by mentioning "TerryL is a FUN loving guy" or maybe that was why we got the bottle of pop and packet of bisquits.

Quite like the route from Algeciras to Tangier Med and we'll probably use that one again.........Inshallah.

But we'll pay the extra (was it only €10) to use FRS.....................Trasmed let themselves down by promising all kinds of times that they cannot deliver.....................if they said their boats only run at 11am and 5pm ...............well no complaints............BUT as mentioned before, but I have to get it off my chest by saying it again we sat on that quayside from 11am until 8pm.

We're puzzled as to what the going rate actually is, does it vary from day to day, because when us and @cakey bought ours there was a notice up in the office saying return crossing €180.
Ann

You know I think maybe it is €180 but they like to keep @TerryL sweet by pretending they are giving him a discount ;):notworthy:................he has certainly been responsible for us and many others travelling to Morocco with Carlos..................now which is the best smiley to show that I'm joking:)

The normal price is €200, but we are as ‘groups’ and therefore get the €180 price. I just point to motorhome fun sign on the wall.

T'aint nuthin to do with me! This year I didn't tell them who I was, just brought half a dozen vans from MotorhomeFun and they reduced it on the spot. Think @Hotelman is on the right track.

But we don't give them much business in comparison to the literally hundreds of French and other nations motorhomes we've seen parked up outside!

But I haven't seen anyone yet get a better price.

New updated version of "Taking a Motorhome to Morocco" now available to full members in the Resources section.

Explains the new vehicle import/export procedures plus some amendments following our further experiences.

We didn't have to even mention MHF the notice said going rate €180, perhaps if we had we would have got it even less,

Yes but did you get the biscuits and bottle of pop.

Some friends of ours are still stuck in Asilah as boats have apparently all been cancelled due to the winds.

So I am now thinking we were lucky to have got off when we did (our green card insurance has now run out)despite the long wait at the quayside...............anyway I'd almost forgotten about that, now we are in the land of flowing hot water and alcohol....................but looking forward to going back next year.

Yes we got biscuit and wine
