Morocco 2019

We re in le relais right now, lovely day 22c and bright sunshine all afternoon, lovely.
Really quiet though - not even half full, never seen it like this before.

Yes water is really bad even when boiled - maybe thats keeping the French away? F Fork Lift Truck'sView attachment 280598

Whats going on here? its replacing what ive typed with Forklift Trucks Oh Please! - Deal with that then!
Keep up at the back:LOL: Fork Lift Trucking has been the chosen Acronym for a good few months now, Jim thought it was either more polite or just plain funny to replace (F) (L) (T) with Fork Lift Trucker.

Has anyone who has a Caxton card worked out if it is better to draw cash from a Moroccan cash point with the Caxton card or a UK Debit card ? Nat West charge 2% or £5.00 per transaction plus another bit depending on the size of the withdrawal. Claxton appear to do the transaction in Sterling then convert the required euros into Sterling and deduct from your balance. It's a mare trying to work the actual costs. I think I might be better off with Caxton but just guessing.

I read same thing Ken and don’t think it’s correct, I googled it this morning and those were same articles, last few years it’s been mid march,
Will see what @River gypsys relays back,
At los barios at mo ferries cancelled tomorrow due to high winds forecast.
Can't seem to get a definitive answer at the moment, butvi can tell you there's no sign of any blossom either, I'll keep asking

Halifax clarity still the best I think Phil

Hi Morocco newbies here.
Firstly a very big Thank You to @TerryL , @jonegood and Derek for shepherding us through the procedures to get us over to and into Morocco and sort out WiFi etc. (which have only just got a connection for)
Lots of great advice which has already proved invaluable, again thanks.

After 2 days at Sidi Ali, camping Zerhoun Belle Vue to visit Volupilis and Moulay Idriss we are now in wet and rainy Meknes for the next few days before moving onto Fes. Gradually getting 'in tune' with things and the adventure so far has been great. I'm sure I've been overcharged for a few things but that is part of the learning. Can't believe how friendly the people are, met some very interesting ones and already been invited back for coffee.

Thanks again @TrerryL and @jonegood, see you on the road hopefully
Safe travels to all.
Onwards and upwards.
Nik.

Get to tafraout , the weather has been unbelievably good, we've been here 2 weeks now not a drop of rain and today is the first day we've see cloud, and that's only one fluffy white one, sitting here in the sun ,again, g&t in hand ,temperature reads 26 degrees

Nik.

Meknes is our favourite Moroccan City, never been there in the rain though.

Take care in Fez, we've never been but I have picked up bad vibes about crime and drugs there, maybe nothing but still take care.

before moving onto Fes.
Nik.

I've just twigged your avatar.

One incident I recall was a pair of bikers from the Vstrom forum who went to do Morocco off piste. They nearly killed themselves constantly picking up the bikes but somewhere near Fez some local tried to sell them drugs and when they said no it got nasty with them being chased by the dealer in a car.

We've just arrived at Oualidia in pouring rain although it's mostly stopped now and the street vendors are out in force! Van is filthy, wonder if any of them are up for a quick "lavage"? Forecast is to dry up overnight and then wall-to-wall sunshine for at least next 10 days - yippee! The guardian parking here is now official, complete with a nice entrance sign (try to get a photo later) and proper receipts - 30 dirhams. There appears to be a large water tank by the bridge seperating the tewo areas, will investigate.

@nic glad to hear all is okay. Maybe catch you at Tafraoute but for now heading south on the trail of @PhilandMena for some warm sunshine.

Won't be riding a bike this time.
That photo was taken high up in the Annapurna Mountains near Muktinath, in Nepal. No drug dealers there. Lol

Loved Fes you got to have a look at the tannery

Hi @Nik glad to hear going well but shame about the rain. 21c and mostly sunny in Marrakech but they are forecasting rain this evening - 2.8mm LOL, you could put a post on and ask about conditions at azrou...although ive just done it, anyone up there? are the roads clear?

Hi @TerryL Love Oualidia, glad its now a permanent, planning to head out west ourselves but been hearing that the road to sidi kaouki is all dug up. Looks like south is the best plan. Jon

Hi Jon.
We were speaking to some who had just come from thereon the site at Sidi Ali and all was clear of snow at the time they were there so all's go for the move South after Fez.
Stay safe.
Cheers Nik

We are south of Zagora, in the desert, exposed in the sand, and the wind had picked up...I now know why camels have long eye lashes, indoors, air con on, TIL the sandstorm finishes.....otherwise great sunshine inland

We stayed at Camping Laguna in Oualidia, which had great views over the bay and an easy route into the town over the rocks.

Now if you are there tomorrow @TerryL the Saturday market has got to be seen.........it's Biblical. Up to the top road and to the left.

We're in Sidi Kaouki at the moment and it's raining.................the road in was OK and we stopped off in Carrefour at Essaouira to stock up. But what do we all (now) know about Friday in Morocco ???? ....................well it's like some parts of Wales used to be on a Sunday.......................the opposite of the weather at the moment.

Still I suppose it counts as an emergency, so seems reasonable to open the emergency stocks.

We stayed at Atlantic beach north of Tafroute as it was the only one round there not full. It is brand new with great facilities , on the beach but miles from anywhere. Huge pitches easy access perfect for large RVs.125 MAD a night.

Then we went to Sidi Wassey where we got internal screens made for our classic Hymer for 500 MAD. Site cost 100 MAD

Now at the municipal campsite in Tiznit. It is jampacked with French but in a great location in the town. 95 MAD a night. Weather was warm and sunny.

There is a bit of cultural appropriation going on though

It says 4, cloudy over the mountain tops but the sun is up,
Thanks, I thought it would still be cold up there this time of the year. We will continue to mooch around here for a while and visit later in the month. Looks like we are coming into some very settled and warmer weather too.

Not sufficient voltage at Sidi Kaouki to power the fridge. I thought it might have come on at night when everyone switched off, but it has defrostedt......................the low voltage seems to be the norm rather than just at peak times.
Don't really want to use up the gas, so I guess we'll leave tomorrow....................... a warning for others who might just have stocked their freezer at the Carrefour in Essaouira.

If you look for a good hardware shop you may find a reasonably priced voltage stabiliser. We bought one when we were in Zagora for the very same reason above. From memory it cost around £40.

Do say a little more about what this does........................my understanding is that the fridge, unlike everything else in the van (althought the kettle is a lot slower)will not operate at all below 200v.

In other places it has cut out when everyone puts their lights on in the evening but comes back on overnight. It seems that here the voltage is always below 200 even in the daytime.

The French have been moaning on CC INfos about the voltage at Kaouki one saying that it was only 145 volts??

Last time we were there smoke started coming out of the CC next to us, had his regulator go on fire - boy did we move quickly!

We are thinking of coming across there tomorrow, whats the weather like?

Jon

This was also our experience when there. Although we were getting 240 V. their was insufficient Amperage to switch our AES fridge to 240 V. and it switched to gas. This also happened at Camping Riad, both campsites stated 6 Amps but this was not the case and they are not bothered as its beyond then to correct and another customer will be along shortly anyway. As for gas, we have been using Butane without any problems at all. In fact, I'm getting towards the end of my first 12 KG bottle. It boils off at -2 Deg.C so will be fine in almost all of Morocco by now , I would think. (It's what the majority of locals are using too). Although, I do suspect there getting below zero degrees at night in Tafroute. (I remember scrapping ice of the motorhome in the mornings on my last two visits there). Quite breezy this morning but not a cloud in the sky, so expecting a better day than yesterday and with better weather moving in from tomorrow onwards.
