Yes that's one of the things that makes it not as easy as it sounds.
I don’t think it’s as easy as it sounds Tam. You can’t just roll up buy a bit of land and start living in Portugal otherwise everyone would be doing it. If you did jump through all the hoops and get some land for your animal sanctuary then your travels would stop because of the animals needing looking after. These ideas always sound good but need looking into seriously. Good luck with whatever you do. 👍

Tam, check out Colin Coco Brown's set up "Hugos Home Farm" I think is his website. He rescues horses, dogs, pigs, parrots in fact just about every animal going then he rehomes them mostly over here. It's hard work and he works at night as a drag queen to pay the bills but he gets quite a good amount of donations from folk as well.

Ian the builder 👷‍♂️, might need a Labourer. Seeing as he's on the hunt for work 🤔
Not great for dogs though., I think farm work , event marshaling or campsite work would be best suited. I'm going to suss out possibilities when I'm back this year both on South Coast and Cornwall area while I'm around there.... see what possibilities there are for next year. Failing that I look in to doing folks gardens or something . Odd jobs etc . Will see what I can find .

Are you suggesting Tam follows that path, he would make a statuesque drag queen ! 🤭🫣

Yes I'm aware of that , but it isn't impossible. Even if i had to split time between Portugal and UK. I'm not ruling it out and there's no exact timescale other than the price increases in land . Even if I bought a plot with plans in the distant future. I doubt I will be longterm travelling forever. I think I have maybe 2 or 3 long trips left in me before I get really fed up of doing it alone or dealing with all the restrictions and hassles. For me it's only half holiday half lifestyle. If it becomes more difficult then I may look in to something else.

Colin's a great guy. I only know him from his farm side as I volunteer there, occasionally.

I can't get my head round his two personas after seeing him in his farm gear. He makes a great "Queen" though according to his videos.

Having animals is limiting if you have too many to take with you. He has to get people in to look after the farm if he wants time off. Luckily, he has many willing volunteers.

Yes IF I started a dog refuge I'd have to do similar. No one can do it alone 24/7

Colin would definitely be happy to give you pointers. Licences are needed for some animals, and even the numbers of others.

Sharon, from Shelter from the Wind, Silvia's charity, would also be good to speak to.

I posted about it on our last trip but we know a couple who bought a very cheap, basic plot of land in Spain and are rescuing animals. They don't do utube and live a VERY simple life with hardly any money. I certainly couldn't live the way they do (live in the van still, no fridge, no running water or electric) and they really love the animals and just the freedom of it as they don't conform to modern society (hippies if you want a label)

They were traveling around with a dog and cat in a van for a few years till they found their plot. We met them during the pandemic when we all stayed long term on a campsite as neighbours. They said that Portugal got too expensive for land so chose Spain instead.

That's interesting as I always expected Spain to be more expensive than Portugal with land.. with everything else Spain seems to be cheaper. Obviously its 5 years later but there were several plots of interest in 2019 I saw priced between €1500 and €4000 , depending on size access and water availability etc. The size of plot the couple I visited from here had was just perfect really and close to a village, easy access etc. But they had to bring water from the village to it . But it was a nice setup.

What part of spain are the couple in?

Ideally Spain would be better for me as I can speak some Spanish and could learn it easier.

If I go down that route it was always my intention to live In the van ...with maybe a caravan sited there for easiness. But no house etc. A couple of outbuildings would be a bonus.

If you do find a piece of land in Spain try and get one with access to water, even if you have to drill for it.

I have to have water delivered - €70 for 13 tonnes.
Septic tank
Electricity is cheap compared to the UK
Solar is the ideal
Council rates cheap as well
Land will be cheapest away from towns and airports

I didn't know you had land in Spain Vic.

The couple I visited had solar and old car batteries. It seemed to work for them .

It's a small place on Mallorca, had it for over 30 years, no pool.

At one time I had one of few motorhomes on the island - now there must be hundreds, maybe a thousand - with no facilities.
If I didn't have my own I wouldn't come here in a van.

The guy I used to use to transfer boats for me over the years was from Cornwall somewhere, he was fantastic he used to bring boats that I'd bought from all over Europe for me, did all the logistics, police escorts etc himself he had it all off to a tee, but never call him an English man! He used to go fecking mad if I said my boat haulier was English he used to say I'm not English I'm from Cornwall! Lol I never did really get it but it was important to him he even had it coach painted on his lorry his name address and then Cornwall on the bottom and in brackets (Not England!) So who knew eh....
