MOBY GOES TO TURKEY. A tam and pups adventure.

Do you have a UK sticker on the can? Twice in Greece people thought we were from Ukraine 🇺🇦
We've had that a few times on our current Spanish trip, people from different countries asking the same thing. I'm considering putting a GB one back on!

It's that long since we've been abroad, I didn't know people were using UK instead of GB:unsure:

Just take the UK one off. You don't need any . The ONLY country interested in what badge is on your vehicle is England. I've not had a gb or UK sticker on any vehicle yet and no one in any country has cared

What you need to appreciate is that some of these people have never been out of their immediate localities.
I’m sure if they mentioned parts of Turkey you would have no idea what part they were referring to.
I’m not trying to be rude but why do you expect the local population to speak English?
Do you speak Turkish?
I own a property in Turkey, my Turkish language teacher told me she once went to a course in Europe. They asked what language they wanted to be taught in, they said English. The lecture started and she was so embarrassed she didn’t understand a word. The lecturer was Scottish!
Imagine being taught English, as a foreigner and pitching up in Newcastle!

Who said I expect them to speak english?

I don't. But when I'm recounting an experience on here there's a reason I mention the person didn't speak english, everyone following this knows I don't speak Turkish

And Scotland isn't a part of anything it is a country in its own right.

I just found it interesting that despite me saying Scotland 3 times in response to "where are you from?" It was not heard.

I'm from Scotland 🤷‍♂️ not Slovenia, not Ukraine and not England.

Even handing a UK driving licence to the guard it was met with " you are from Ukraine? "

That was the point of the story 🤷‍♂️

So sorry that people in Eastern Turkey have never heard of Scotland!

Took my big UK sticker off just left the little ones on the plates.
Even had English people living in Spain asking where we were from.

It's been another relatively boring day driving again today , left elazig this morning...we're in mus now drove through a bit more snow on the hills but it's not cold thankfully, around 15° today and around 9° now. I'm only continuing east now so I can say I've done it I think as it's not doing much for me. I think if I return to Turkey on another occasion cappadocia will be as far east as I come. Still undecided about Georgia but I've found you can buy insurance online . There's no motorhome category though but people I've spoke to just put it as private car .. its €30 for 14 days . Which I think would be long enough for me this trip. But will see how I feel when I get up near the border.

Few pics from today ...there's not many

Same here, even had a Scottish couple who live in Spain ask if we were from Ukraine ... I know we have a different accent from them but even so! 😄

Tam, The Turkish name for Scotland is

İskoçya

(Pronounced Iskosia)
Whether they will know where it is or not is a different matter.
Yes that's pretty standard throughout Europe, slightly different pronunciation but that's why I have the ecosse sticker on the van , it's French for Scotland, Spanish is escoces etc ..

Only stopped twice today thankfully ... they never asked where I was from just took passport and spent 5 minutes flicking through all the stamps. Strange as they always have a tablet which I'm sure shows them when I entered the country etc as they always put my reg number in to it.

I think they can probably follow your entire route in Turkey. Even the petrol stations enter your registration in to a computer before they fill you up.

It seems the closer you get to the borders the more intense the gendarme checks are , instead of the few cones and a police car you'd get further west .. its now soldiers in full uniform with weapons etc , the road is blocked with big concrete blocks directing you in to a sort of enclosed tunnel and instead of cars it's like armoured truck things .. not quire tanks but like armoured trucks you see for banks but in military colours. The guards are always pleasant...unlike the French who always seem stern. They usually have a bit of a chuckle or laughter etc . Always got waved through them further west but I don't think they see many campervans or foreign tourists around these areas. Or at least not in winter as I do seem to be a curiosity....same when I'm passing through or stopped in a town . I feel like a royal parade at times 🤣

I travelled an eastern Turkey in the late 1990’s and security was a big issue. It was the historical disagreement between the Turks and the Kurds. Given the fact you are meeting road blocks and the army could indicate that the situation is still sensitive. Keep your wits about you and I suggest you avoid going further south east.
Loving your thread, keep it going, Thanks.

I bet that was tempting Tam….😱

Not tempting just hard to see. This park is strewn with rubbish and these 7 pups are living amongst it. There 4 or 5 big dogs around too but all keeping their distance.

That snow made me feel cold, please find some sand and sun again, it’s dreary enough here in Cornwall at the moment, it’s just grey sky and drizzle along with some large showers. So please cheer me up with some sun and sand.@Tam.

What an interesting life you lead Tam, thanks for sharing it.
Weather forecast was rain and wind in hull currently brilliant sunshine and everyone is smiling.
Stay safe.

From where I am now I think it might be a while before we get sun and sand . But yes I always miss the coast when I'm away from it too long.

By a lovely lake just now though.

We left mus this morning , heading towards van , a lot more snow again on the mountains .. 3 more military checkpoints today ...it wouldn't be so bad if they wouldn't tap on the windows etc to the dogs , everyone in Turkey seems to do this. The attendants in petrol stations do it to which results in my dogs all going ballistic barking growling and scratching at the windows etc .... pests.

Stopped at an auto parts place too and picked up some spare brake pads to replace the ones I used £43 ...bit more expensive than I paid in UK but I'd rather have a set just incase.

Carried on to tatvan to a spot beside lake van , and a nice surprise was one of the Belgian couples I spent Christmas with was already here . So we had a catch up over lunch.

Beautiful spot this with stunning views , the dogs all had great fun having a chase around together . Just as the sun was setting this local guy came down to see us , had a bit of a chat using Google translate etc .. he then left and about half an hour later I was just starting to make dinner when there was a knock at the door and there was the local guy with a big tub of fresh made soup , 2 large nan breads and a load of donner meat for us to share . The friendliness and generosity of the Turkish people is really something else. I can firmly say there is zero chance of you parking up somewhere in Scotland and having any local people bring you free food. You'd be more likely to have someone turn up and try to charge you money.

He left us the food and walked off again, half an hour later while we were still eating he returned with 4 big 5 litre bottles of water and a big tub of goats cheese ....
