Mobility scooters

I can recommend the Solax folding scooter
Easy to pick up and put in the boot of a car but will take up to 100kg.
pick ‘em up second hand on eBay for around £700

I have an e-foldi. Lightweight. Fits easily into back of pvc. Tend to remove battery when lifting it in because just makes it a bit lighter. Easy to fold and unfold. No taking bits apart. Designed for those who need some help with their mobility. Designed for hard surfaces, but I’ve used it on short grass provided it is dry. Obviously can’t use on gravel, so where hardstandings are gravel have to shell it off the gravel before getting on.
I bought an e-foldi for my wife. She can't walk for long distances. It seems well made, and versatile - it can just be towed like a shopping trolley, to provide a seat if needed. She hasn't used it a lot, as she's not used to a twist throttle, but hopefully will get more confident using it on our drive. It folds up quite small and gets strapped to the fixed bed when we take it in the MH.

Looking at one of these in a motobility shop in town this afternoon.

Quite comical and would feel a prat riding around on that

I am suffering with Arthritis and a disc problem.
Would benefit from one as I cant walk more than a few metres without crutches.
I just want one that looks like a kids scooter with a seat.
I dont mind looking lazy, just cant cope with looking disabled!
My wife is the same, not disabled, but cannot walk far.We bought Xiaomi mii electric scooter and added a collapsible seat off e bay. Works a treat, about 20 mile range and all folds down.Obviously cannot be used on public roads, but ideal around NT properties, canal towpaths etc. Fits in the “boot”of our Autotrail V line sport.Strangely do not get the odd looks that she used to since adding the seat!

If it is for dog walking then it will likely involve going across roads using the ramp curbs on most paths.

some of the folding scooters have a vary low ground clearance. 20 ton25 mm with a small wheel underside .

I need one I can use in parks and places like the NEC.
The Xiaomi would do what I require with a seat
I wonder if it would fool anyone if I fitted a wider aluminum deck making it look less different.

Can I just say thanks for everyone’s inputs and observations it’s all been very helpful and given me a few things to think about and I’m now going to trawl ebay etc . I might when we are away hire something that might be suitable to see if Christine is confident with using one .
So thanks again

I have one, not folding, but comes to pieces. I have to have hubby as I’m unable to get it from the car or put it together, there seems to be an art in the putting it together. A couple of times we’ve had to unscrew it before hubby got the knack. We looked at the folding but was told that although they’re folding, the weight can be prohibitive.

That's something I don't have to worry about .....we've be motorhomeless for quite some time.
As for transporting it now or in the future......trailer
the last thing you want is a mobility scooter on a trailer it will restrict where you go with it, I have one like the one below easy to take apart and stoor in the boot of my Corsa where it lives while not in use.

<Broken link removed>

also have one of these that get transported in a transit van

It is difficult to swallow your pride, more so if you are younger than people expect to see using a mobility scooter, but it is worth it for the freedom.
Not sure how practical a none folding scooter would be unless you are built like Geoff Capes !
Mine is a heavy non-folding beast, but I take our dogs on very rough rocking routes, so the lighter weight type with less ground clearance wouldn't suit me at all.
Its only downfall for us is that the tyres are solid, and it only has a ground clearance of 2.5"
That will be fine on smooth pavements, I know of one local person who regrets choosing solid tyres.
Mine has a 6" ground clearance.

Very true and having tried one of the 'shopper' types, though not a folding one that my brother brought up here I would say that I don't think some of them are very stable at all. It's always worth trying them out and not just on a smooth flat surface......if they can't handle the odd uneven surface and feel stable, look at another.

Until April last year I ran a warehouse and distribution centre for DDH who make (well import to be more accurate as they are all made in China or Taiwan) these. A Sportrider. Made a special sparkly one for a pretentious customer!
Livewell is a place to buy mobility stuff without the dealer mark up.

I agree, I tried a few 'skateboard' type and felt very uncomfortable.
The all felt like they would break with my 18st sat on them.
As for the tiny 6" or less wheels....nothing I can say in praise.
I much prefer my 14" wheels and front and rear full 'coil over shocker' adjustable suspension.

Yes I have one it’s a Atto sport. Quite expensive but if you search
ATTO disability scooter on YouTube your see just how good they are.

they Have a fair ground clearance compared to a lot of others. Easy to use. Charge. Fold. Carry. And Store.
I use mine a lot both in a caravan when we had one and the car. And soon to be the Moho.

they make the atto sport max for larger people.

Near on a year now with no problems at all. The battery last a long time but as it goes down it does reduce the speed .
however never goes lower than 4 mp after an hours or so ride.

the only thing is they have magnetic brakes so going down a hill is a little noisy at it applies the bricks so as to now exceed the selected speed.

as for distance I go no more then 4 mile there and 4 miles back. Then put the battery on charge for the next trip.

I did find that arm rests are a total waste of time as there very restrictive getting both on and off.
also the back you can get is expensive but for me worth getting. Although there is still room on the base plate to carry a few more shopping bags.

Thanks for that when you say the arm rests are restrictive can they be folded away to exit and alight?
Do you mean the bag accessory that clips on the back is worth having ? We thought the bag was a good idea also and worth considering. Did you get the extra seat cushion?

The arm rests fold up and then slide into the back of the seat. Difficult to get them out after you have sat down.

never bought the seat cushion as it was something else to carry about but did buy the under seat bag
not the on one the back of the seat ……why you may ask. the answer is again when seated you can’t reach it to either put anything in or out.

someone else can do it for you but that’s not very independent for me.

the underseat bag has a padded seat and is easy while sitting to pack or in pack with most items .
items can be put in the bag from either side…

when finished just slides off the seat empty or with packed items the bag can be flat packed between the scooter when stored.
and the price of them have just jumped as well but you may be able to get a discount as your buying the scooter if not say your going to do a deal with another supplier. Every penny counts.
also your need to fill in a tax exemption form.

That’s great we are very grateful for the advice and tips it’s very helpful before seeing the the scooter will let you know how we get on .

I have had a variety of scooters Now on 2 wheels but took a long time to get fit enough

There are some very comfortable ones and some rubbish ones (I've a spinal injury so the ones without suspension are SO uncomfortable

I did find a few that were OK and one that was amazing - wish I could have afforded Lithium batteries I actually fitted 100 amp gel batteries to one of the BIG prides and got 35 miles range around Benidorm and Vila Joiosa which isn't too shabby

IF you look you can find larger scooters that dismantle just in front of the rear wheels where you also remove the batteries everything actually fitted into our motorhome garage

Worst was a Pride Go Go after travelling to Rome it worked fine then Ciampiano Airport wrecked it took the shop 6 months to get it to work correctly again
