Mercedes vario 814 self build bus to FLT palace

More tear down today ...think the 6 month build idea was ambitious .

Well I spotted one bit in good nick - the exhaust pipe.
Yeah the exhaust is recent ... great thing about the floor being lifted is i can also clean up all the pipes, hoses , brackets etc that you'd normally have to lie under the van to do.

Don’t be tempted to rush it Tam just to get back on the road. You do a good job now over the next year or so and it will be done right and last you as long as you like and even then have a great resale price. (y)

tbf the important stuff looks pretty good although the sills look horrible. How are you at fabricating? If you re after the rugged look sills might be good and cheaper out of Chequer plate?

Yeah the rear sills are knackered so is the inner sills. They will be remade from scratch . The others arent bad just small repair patches needing put in . All the main chassis etc is perfect ...

I plan to put very thin checker plate over the sills anyway but want to weld new metal in first.

I'd love to see their reaction when they go round a roundabout at speed and all the baskets fly out of the cubby holes! :giggle:

Mind you, the cooker might join them!

I don’t think it’s too bad for the price, but the finishing touches don’t quite make it. Maybe it’s USP is that it’s built to last....maybe.

Good luck with that, you can get new overlanders for that money.
I wouldn't buy it ( cant afford it ) but someone will ....some of those germans are nuts ..

I saw one in greece that the guy was painting on the beach and he said he was regularly offered 200k for it ....bit bigger than that one right enough . But not everyone doing overland wants a huge van ... that one probably could go off road pretty well

A bit naff hopefully Tam will do much better.
I certainly wont be putting that grey stretch carpet everywhere ... never liked that as it gets really scruffy ....dont like anything about that one to be honest.

Well it being Sunday i didnt want to make to much noise but lifted the rest of the floor , removed the passenger buddy seat , removed all the pipe work for the rear heater ( might refit that later not sure yet) and gave it a hoover out inside as lots of debris caught in all the channels etc. Think i now have a plan how im going to build the support frame for the bike carrier and i think ive changed my layout also ( more on that later) tomorrow more grinding and cleaning up metal ... borrowing a 9 inch grinder from a mate on Tuesday to cut out those lengths of iron the coschbuilders put in for the seats to bolt to as they are rusty and holed in places and not part of the original van so ill just remove them now.
The front half of the van is much better than the rear and needs very little in the way of cleaning up before i can prime and paint the floor suports etc ... progress is progress however slow.
