Mercedes vario 814 self build bus to FLT palace

Decided today to remove the one remaining plastic wheel arch to make sure there was no rot under there. It looked fine under that arch and id given it a good whack around with a hammer but it was niggling at me that id removed the other 3 and not that one ...so i fut the screw heads off and removed the arch....not surprised really but its rotten under there too ☹️ but at least it will now be caught before it gets any worse.

Really bad design these arches as all the crap goes in behind the 2 inch plastic trim and then Rots out the steel
Will have to think of a better way of sealing them when i refit the plastics later.

Cleaned up all the sills today too so i can now see which parts need replaced and which parts are not that bad ....

Panels are hard to come by ....it will just be fabricated. The passenger side is much much worse but i knew about that as the arch was removed when the step was cut out. Its still all fixable and at least ill know its done

I'd take panel fabrication to a million sensors and speed restrictors!!

Hey Tam ... are you thinking of doing a 'loft' conversion? :giggle: This pulled into where we are today but it didn't stop so I only just managed to get a couple of photos of it which I thought you'd like!

At least it had a woodburner Tam, I thought you'd be drooling at the thought of having your own high-level 'rumpy-pumpy' room!
I spotted the woodburner ...thats the only good bit. The rest needs cleansed with fire

Im starting to think this van is jinxed

I cant get the bloody wheels off. .....i picked the better looking set of rear wheels to start with and thought id take them off to clean up and paint the hub ....and the wheels .

Got a the wheel nuts off eventually but thats a shift on its own ....but i cant get the wheels off ...its like they have rusted/welded together and to the hub ....my arms are hanging off.

Dont have a sledgehammer but i think thats what its going to take

I just noticed that you have rear full air suspension (you probably mentioned it early in the thread). That's really worthwhile - is the front air as well?

Had a quick google on that size and they are not cheap.
Hopefully you can find a good deal.

The guy charlie i bought the passenger seat from has about 6 wheels and tyres in his garage so im going to get a couple of those from him at the weekend aswell as a wiper motor.

I plan to fit all terrain tyres to it once ive finished the build so they will do me just now. 2 he says are almost new

I don't know if your van is drivable at the moment but if you have this problem again put the wheel nuts back on to about 2 threads from tight and rock the van forwards and backwards to break the rust between them also works on the fronts if they are stuck to the hubs

What size don't 7.5t tyres fit? Might be worth changing to a more popular size and getting commercial tyres? Cannot see them being more than £100 for budget, £200 for A/T.

Edit just looked they aren't cheap!!!

I've just finally had my first vaccine.
So if i now die or grow 2 heads you know why. Been perfectly healthy up till now.
Is you arm magnetic now. Could be an issue with all that steel you are putting into the van. Best change it all to aluminium as quickly as possible
