LIFE AFTER HELGA !!!!

mom going to brace beam when in position David, in the top webbing with acrows,, I’m hoping it will be good enough! View attachment 419779
Don’t just rely on just a straight row of the ten across under the beam as a sideways collapse could occur. Your existing acrows are also in a straight line and some appear to be leaning. The strong boy brackets used induce tortion on the acrow which is not good so they could do with bracing also. I presume you intend to genie the UC beam up to be firm under the plates of the strong boys, acrow up and then shim up the gap in places between the strong boys. This would relieve the tortion effect on the existing acrows. As a bare minimum diagonal bracing could be inserted between the two rows of acrows

It's all too technical for me but would just say get it right Ian, don't take any chances or make any mistakes- most of all stay safe! You are very precious to all of us.

I notice a wooden floor too, make sure there is plenty of bracing on the floor for when you lift the beam and acrow it up..👍🏼

Ive cut holes in the floor and the acrows are on concrete under smiffy! The acrows now under the beam we’ve just placed are on both skins of brickwork offset, in pairs,, front and back of the steel!

Well that’s that,,, took a bit of time to organise, but no injuries, damage or dramas,,

all good and can have a weekend stress free! 4EDD5530-7802-4AF1-BE4B-1514D1ED3598.jpegD6495CE1-6056-4D5E-9CF4-2D5E7A73B352.jpeg6EFA3EC8-F6DC-49C4-A8A6-A97B0C3E3AF7.jpeg5C094137-C1D0-43AA-80EB-86724E81A179.jpeg

Great job Ian - glad it went OK! (y)

You had us all on the edge of our keyboards, willing you to get the beam in place. Serious stuff.

Me and Ian had about an hour on the phone last night talking today's job through, we agreed it was slow and steady and it should be ok. The only two bits of advice I had to offer were, if one of the genies starts to wobble don't try to save it, and clear a good escape route in case the acros decide to take a walk.

good advice and the most important reason to keep a clean site maintained. With older buildings you can come unstuck if somebody else has been there before and bodged something. I can well remember frantic knocking on our front door one Sunday dinner time. A neighbour had seen builders extend other houses in the street and knock the back wall down to join in. The problem was this guy had few tools and tried to prop the building using uprights of 4x2. Needless to say, dinner was abandoned and we spent the afternoon putting in acrows and pulling down dangerously loose bricks. His wife was seriously unimpressed with his DIY skills. No charge, but the wife gave us a drink for our troubles. The husband then had the brass cheek to ask a couple of other builders to quote for the work to reinstate the damage and do the job properly. The wife over-ruled him though and told him that we would be doing the work regardless of cost. He still insisted on helping as a labourer though.

I often wonder what they would have done if there was not a builder living opposite that fateful Sunday afternoon

So pleased to see your last post Ian that all went to plan, though I never doubted it would, lovley to see all the support and concern for you on here.
Now I think you deserve a brew or two and a peaceful weekend.

can i stand in the queue of women (or men no sexism here) who want to marry you? ;) I only want 2 floating shelves putting up but have been waiting about 15 years

my houses have never been finished sue,, like most builders I know, who wants to do diy when we get home!! We’d rather build an extension on the back than hang shelves,, 15 years isnt that long!!! Lolol

I inherited mum and dad's house and believe me, half finished jobs are being found in every room. My dad retired and planned to do all those jobs so they could sell up and move to a bungalow. He passed away just before starting his pension. Then mum didn't want anything done in the house as she felt it made her closer to dad. I have spent a few thousand so far on work I can't do myself these days and have a growing list of jobs to finish or redo, then decorate

Think that's quite common! I waited 15 years for a new bathroom in our last house and 6 months later we moved!

Getting worried now as we've finished the bathroom, kitchen, living/dining room and hall. Spare bedroom also done, his workroom tidied but needs lighting sorted out, fitted L shaped tables for my sewing room. Just our bedroom to sort out now! then what?

what probably made it worse was I built 3 new 5 bed houses in part of the garden and we were having one to move into, Mrs CC chose the internal decor.
The one I built also had a big drive and workshop.
Chap made me an offer I couldn’t refuse so I sold it😁😁

As of today still married 😂

Evening,,

went to work today,, ended up digging holes for the concrete, to support the new piers I have to build to support the steel which takes the back of the house!!
Had to straddle the existing footings of the house, but all done and waiting for ballast tomorrow, so I can concrete! 68506430-C5E7-4AE9-B05C-0178D7CF8790.jpeg2500562D-74CA-48DF-B061-DEC4D9F7B788.jpeg1F0DC327-D26D-4FE7-833C-CD39BCA6D579.jpeg
