no they don’t mate,, biggest single beam, for weight, I’ve ever put in,,, so I don’t have to juggle them over the piers required to hold em up,I’m going to put beam up, acrow under it and then build piers up to it afterwards! No chance of moving a half ton steel backwards and forwards to juggle it in!

So are you going to be working under that big beam when it’s just supported by acrows?

Sounds dangerous!

Good luck.

Just one acrow under it? I think you will need more than that 🙀

for years my career biggest steel was a little over 15m long. So long that we had to get permission to close a main road for an hour to get it into the building, It was a car showroom with 2 floors of flats above, and they wanted to extend the showroom into the next building. We had no choice but do it early on a Sunday morning. Off the lorry was fairly easy, as the wagon turned 90 degrees to the building, blocking both lanes and pavements. Then the crane lifted it up and back into the building, running on a dolly. Took 45 minutes to offload, so kept the traffic warden happy, as we were quicker than planned. The final lift took 10 men to lift each end, and hydraulic jacks to get it positioned perfect

Then we got a job re configuring a church, and had to install a 16m beam 5m in the air to hold a sliding removable wall. That one was worrying, but we had a stroke of luck. One of the guys that worked for us had just left the Royal Engineers and he offered to supply the manpower for a fixed price. There was a local base where his regiment were based briefly and he put the call out. We assembled reinforced scaffold staging in readiness to get to the 2 new 600mm square new columns had been built. A minibus pulled in to the site and out poured a fine group of young gentlemen. Within about an hour, the beam was up and all had moved over the road to the pub. Even paying the guys, plus a bonus each and the bar tab for the lunchtime, we were still quids in on the contract.

It was amazing to watch them work, it was craned off the lorry, and within seconds, it had been lifted and onto the site. Those guys are like machines and they followed all instruction from our chap, their ex Warrant officer without complaint or question

If ever you want to convert an ambulance give us a bell, you have seen ours and could put you on to a good one at right money and could show you how to go on.
You could even do it here if you wanted.

You can get a decent 313 sprinter with about 150k on the clock for £6500
And bits to convert are about 6k
The rate your work is coming in you’ll be able to afford it in no time

Morning,,,

well this is the day I attempt to lift steel into place,, I have tracked down and hired two superlift genies from HSS hire,,, coming around mid morning,, Now I have hired this type because,,,,,,,,

they take the weight of 450 kg each, at a ten foot lift, so they should be enough for 8 ft lift!!
But the main reason I got them is because, they are a straight up and down lift, unlike the previous genies I have hired, they don’t lean backwards as they rise to counteract the weight! So I should be able to place beam in position on the floor, and with the vertical lift, just go straight up and then acrow in place,, I have ten acrows to achieve this,, I think it should be enough,, plus I shall be leaving the existing acrows in place that are propping up the house at the moment!!

I will be working underneath the whole structure,, to dig the pad foundation and then build the piers, both of which I’m hoping to finish by next weekend,, which is when my customer is going away for a week, and I’m going to build a porch for someone else,, the customer, Richard, has enjoyed being with me/ us all day and has been very helpful, and asked me if I didn’t mind having the week off, so he doesn’t miss anything while he’s gone! Lolol. Also it means I don’t have to ring him daily with updates, pics etc for info purposes,, and as he’s buying all materials he doesn’t have to worry about that!!

So, that’s my day, I hope
there’s no dramas,,

wish me luck!!!! Xxxxx

I will update with pics later, whatever the result!! Xxxx

Sounds as if you are all organised, have a good day. Love to see the work that you enjoy coming in for you. ☕

Morning Ian. :)

Good luck with the RSJ, and stay safe. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)
It’s a UC (Universal Column) Jock, not a RSJ. UC’s are square in section and much heavier per metre run than RSJ’s, and are primarily used for columns.
Ian, don’t forget to brace the Acrows using scaffold sections, especially in the lateral direction. Would like to see pictures of support work as it is at moment ie, before introducing the beam. Good luck, you will be fine with it all - you have thought it all out.
David.
