Learn to crochet?

@Puddleduck has a good point about washing because it is wool. However, I am sticking with tapestry wool because I have so much of it. When it’s finished I will keep it where it won’t get dirty.:LOL::LOL:

@Puddleduck I will crochet you some poppies. Do they need to be any particular size? If I don't see you I will get them to @movan

Any yarn and any size - but more than a couple of inches across (or much bigger of you wish!) please and thank you. There are loads of patterns on the web or you could just do a circle with a black centre (a few of mine are like that).

I'd need them by 1st Nov if possible but we will also be doing something for the anniversary of the signing of The Treaty of Versailles (28 June 2019). Every flower will count.

@davanne - that's very good - you are definitely on the way now. Choose your colour scheme and start on your blanket.:clap2:

Haven't heard from @Anthea M whose request started this thread in the first place. I think she's too busy going out for coffee with friends.:imoutahere:

Lorraine @whingyraindrop (once the star pupil:LOL:) what are you hoping to make?

Going into Carmarthen one day this week so will go into the market to the wool stall and see what they have ...can I use a thicker wool or is it best to stick with double knitting wool?

Persevere Jen the middle of last week I was ready to throw the lot through the window:rofl:
I found the Bella Coco videos very good as you can keep stopping it as you go along. I spent an afternoon watching and listening then trying.
I’ve also found the granny squares easier to do than the double crochet which I was struggling with ...but when I tried edging in double crochet it suddenly clicked and now I don’t have a problem.
You can do it girl(y)

Well we had a little crochet session this morning and @champers completed her first project and I’ve started a few poppies as I found some red wool in my kit and had bought some black buttons, so it was obviously meant to be.
Kath’s poppy is the pink one as that was the wool she had. I’m impressed for a first project :)

Loving the poppies !!!

I want to make a throw with granny squares can I use a thicker wool as the double knit squares are quite fine and I want something heavier and more substantial

You can use any thickness of wool you fancy but you may need bigger hooks as a small hook won’t cope with thicker wool.
If you’re really into this crochet it would be a good idea to get a set of different sizes, have a look at Amazon.
The balls of wool you buy will have knitting needle and crochet hook sizes on the label but you don’t have to stick to those exact sizes. I usually look at how the wool sits in the hook.

Thank you i have tried for years to do 2 rows and between this thread and Vanessa @Ven something was crochet... long long way to go but enjoyed my lesson this morning been on a wool hunt only redish colour i could find in a thicker ply
Ps that is grey to dk purple not blue hope that is ok for a poppy

Mine's so crinkly that I'm thinking of washing it in Oil of Olay .. :( and I still can't do it.

@snailtrailon my travels hve injured right wrist and forgot my yarn and hook and the k on my pc doesn't always wor

@davanne Anne - a blanket in those colours would look lovely.
I would support double knitting because of the vast choice of colours and the way the finished blanket would fold itself around you. If you can, choose the same make of yarn. If you want to get an odd ball of something thicker, make up a granny square and compare it to your original sample ;)

Poor @scotzue what a shame - I'm sorry you've hurt your wrist. :crying: Hope you're not in too much pain with it.

Just had a look in my yarn case (suitcase that is) and I only have one pack of yarn - stuff I bought about 30 years ago and never used and won't use anytime soon ..... so I can buy new yarn with a clear conscious in a few weeks :) @The Happy Hooker do you fancy a trip to The Fabric Guild ? - Martin is going on a weekend course soon - or anyone else in the Leicester area want a trip out for some fabric and yarn fondling?

As usual I’m late to the party! I got distracted with the Harry Potter quilt I’m making for our eldest. Anyway, all of your successful effeorts shamed me into trying once again to learn the ways of the crochet. I knuckled down yesterday with the YouTube tutorial and voila granny squares :)

It’s quite addictive, I’ve started a blanket now. So far it’s around 9inches square.

It’s supposedly ergonomic. I bought them on the recommendation of a friend when I last tried to learn several years ago. Not sure if it makes a difference or not:smiley:
