Learn to crochet?

Oh Joy don't be so sad. I know you've already made a start when you were using the multi-coloured wool and have mastered the crochet hook. The proof was in the photograph. The chain and second row are difficult to master so why not have a go with the granny square. If you have access to the video by Bella Coco follow that. If not, get yourself to the library and borrow a book on crochet.

Stuck here on the sofa with my dizziness I have crocheted ten squares - whoopee - and while focusing on greens (lots of different shades) and other autumn colours I have realised those colours are perfect to co-ordinate my Lounge. Very traditional, I have green leaves in the wallpaper, tan recliners and a cream settee. So, a throw over the settee is what I'm aiming for.

That’s what I’m aiming for Auntie Pam but in the autumnal colours of the cushion I just need to go and sort out the wool now.

Ive had to abandon attempts to learn crochet for now as I'm trying to knit a dozen pairs of hand warmers and some squares to get out to South Africa by the end of April.
@Puddleduck -- the needle felted poppy came out too thick and heavy looking for my liking, poppies have a lot of movement to them. So I tried wet felting. Here's the prototypes- the purple seems to be the right weight to hold its shape while still having poppy-like qualities. The red ones not quite right. I can thread some embroidery thread through the back of each, like yours. I have some small brooch backs I can stitch on too if they're going to be sold or given away after being displayed.

Those poppies look amazing..... I also have brooch backs from when I used to make jewellery but I think we are planning to reuse and re-purpose the poppies getting local children involved - there are a lot of commemorations over the next few years right up to 1923/4 when the final treaty came into effect. I am making poppies in PLA with my 3D printer and they fade and biodegrade which is quite poignant. Our village war memorial is on a busy and dangerous bend so we are also hoping that the PLA display will make people slow down and take more notice. Well I can hope anyway.

Perhaps we will give our crafted poppies to people who attend the memorials as a thank you token - I haven't managed to get my head round that part yet and would need to speak with the chair and secretary of the war memorial group for their views .....

No problem, I'll keep on wet felting. Going to a wool fair at Buckfastleigh on Sunday so hoping there'll be some lovely soft fluff in amazing colours for me to play with !

And it is comforting to remember that with the mass of poppies we will be using that odd shapes and errors won't be noticed :)

@Chrysalis Alice... Lovely to see you joining in - I think there might be a race soon to see who can finish before the next rally. Perhaps we should have an exhibition

Have you got pictures of the Harry Potter quilt? Would love to see it.

Best Wishes to you and Chris.

I haven’t got very far with the quilt as yet. It’s paper pieced and slow going. I’ve borrowed my friends embroidery machine and that’s slowing me down even more as it’s so much fun! It’s currently stitching out a portrait of Snape

While I’m waiting to get my wool for the throw I want to make I’m practising different stitches ...in the beginning I struggled with the double crochet but am getting the hang now.

:cry::cry::crying::crying: it's official I'm stupid! :crying:

Joy I tried again last night but it leaves my wrist in agony - so I’m giving up playing hooky, and saving myself for playing my wonderful little instrument - thereby escaping the label above .... maybe you should ditch the hook and pick up the Uke instead .... we could serenade the hookers while they (double) ply their trade ..... @snailtrailer im still in lurking but will get stuck in later, and hopefully it will click. Hope your feeling better soon. x

Wow - that is going to be some gift, what a lucky person.

I visited another Chinese bizarre today (I’m going to need a trailer for all this wool soon LOL) and I hope this purple will be okay for the animal remembrance poppies?

Thanks to Kath ( @champers ) kindly buying me the correct size hook I was able to start my first proper project which is a boho poncho for me to wear at festivals this summer. I found the patten on YouTube and ordered this wool from a Portuguese shop, I love it :)

Loving seeing everybodies progress and other projects. Needle felting fascinates me but I think Dave may divorce me if I add another hobby to my motorhome kit in addition to Crossstitch, Cards, jewellery making and now crochet!

Not sure what I've been doing but the idea was to get used to using my hook think now I'll have to start following a pattern. I think I need a print out with all the a abreveations in big letters. This is what I did.

LOVE those ... wow ... Clever people on here.

I'm not sure but I think Bev of @DavidG58 can embroider. Am I right Bev? Think you recently learned to crochet too ... and did amazingly. X

I was introduced to needle felting by Dawn once and made a little teddy about 2inches high who has pride of place in my motorhome... will photo him tomorrow. Funnily enough was looking at a beautiful rabbit and sheepdog today and thinking I might have a go at them and butterflies.. so much to do and so little time ... x

@Ven love the purple and the other yarn you have. I made two PLA poppies today (well the petals I have the centres to do).

Beautiful !

Inbetween my commitments today I made my final visits to all the charity shops for red wool for poppies ... nothing but managed to buy two balls in Wilkinsons so that Carol and I may hopefully make some for Puddleduck at Chester .... @Janine has offered to teach.. :)

I have a feeling mine may be tucked underneath to create bulk where necessary, Helen . :)

I also got some silvery grey cotton in a charity shop ... bit thin but I can double it up. I want to make several flowers for on my lounge cushions.

Thank you everyone for your inspiration.

@Geraldine you must do what you think best but please keep popping in. I DO have a ukelele .. my daughter bought it for me years ago but I never tried to play it ... I carry it around in my mh like an ornament. :) x

Well done everyone(y)

Do you realise this thread only started on 5th March and in the process we have found @Puddleduck, @Janine, @Shrimp, @The Happy Hooker and @Ven who have been encouraging and given advice. We have been persuaded to make crochet poppies and we already have success stories evidenced by the photographs.

You must all get a gold star for your perseverance. "You're my favourites................keep hooking.
See you tomorrow.

I went to one of those sessions - it was the first time I'd taken my wig off in public. It gave me the giggles when I looked round the room. Probably totally inappropriate but hey-ho :-)

Mine was at the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool. They gave us a DELICIOUS meal ... don't know what others thought when they looked in ... 20 bald eagles munching away like there was a famine on ...

One lady arrived in a woolie hat as her hair was only just showing but after makeup and she did look stunning said she was confident enough to leave with out it!!
She had a purple wig at home!!(y)
