Learn to crochet?

This is the link to the video. I watched it over and over again, stopping it every few seconds to catch up.

I could have knitted willy warmers for the complete Welsh Six Nation squad in the time it took me to crochet that square! Not for the English squad, obviously, that would have taken weeks!

I think it’s taken over forty hours to get this far! Most of those hours spent unravelling and starting again. Yesterday afternoon i just seemed to get it.

Well, you do the crocheting of them and make the measurements for you. ;)

Newly inspired by your post I will try again tonight. (y)

@whingyraindrop You are a credit to the FCC definitely top of the class (unless someone else has completed the granny square. You get A* for your persistence and the result, a granny square that looks really neat.

Hope that doesn't sound patronising - I am often accused of doing it but don't really know what it means.

Thank you ! Not patronising at all. It’s the first time I have been top of the class!

I’ve decided I’m going to have an hour watching the video then have a go at one of those squares ...I may be some time if you see smoke over Wales you will know why:giggler:

@davanne I have been crocheting squares all afternoon and mine look just the same. A few large loops where I've lost the rhythm or dropped that yarn. You are well away now. I am so pleased you've mastered it. Is that the video that shows how to twist the hook? Very helpful and something you can't describe. Did you buy another crochet hook or are these squares made with your 'fat' hook.:dance2:

Another thing to mention is that acrylic or wool do that. It's not so obvious with cotton which has less stretch.

Thanks Pam I am still using the original hook not had chance to get another....I sat and watched the video then started again watching as I went by the time I got to the second square it was all coming back to me.
I realised that when I did the first one I was doing 3 chains between instead of 1:doh: that’s why it was a bit holey

Creep.... :p ;) x

Oy ! I haven’t been top of the class before so I am making the best of it!

I am the person that, in an orthopaedic viva voca exam, was handed the bones of the foot and asked to talk about them. I talked about the bones of the hand, conditions of the hand etc. Whilst I wondered why the examination panel were scowling at me. . .

Any road, Anne is now top of the class. the square I attempted today is actually considerably worse than yesterday’s!

Thanks Lorraine my first one was awful but only realised when doing the second that I had been putting the wrong number of chains in between.
I shall try another later and see how that goes.

Any instructions on how to crochet a girlfriend!

Ian ... I'm really trying my best for you .... I've got as far as casting on ..... :( ....... she might be 80years old by the time I finish her.

Right.. I was confused. I thought that was Single crochet but it's Double Crochet. Is that correct?

If so WHAT is Single crochet please ... which stitch or action is it ghat determines whether it is single, double , treble etc .. ?

What UK people call a double crochet in the US is a single crochet (and to confuse things even more the UK treble is a US double).

@Carol The flowers are really lovely - I am making flowers for the war memorial here so if anyone wants to help out with a few I'd be grateful ...... ideally red with black centres but white, black or purple (peace poppies, people of colour and animals injured in conflict respectively) would be more than welcome.

@ianthebuilder I have the pattern for "the knitted character" from Harry Hill's programme which is actually crocheted. I could make a girly one for you to cuddle while you wait for Joy to come up with the goods. Thanks for joining in.

As a last post before I creep back to my bed for an early night..............do have a look at Anne's @davanne signature(y)

Carol, I started again and I think I've worked out how it was done. I've just done another chain and have gone back down it.

However, I now have to find the instructions again as I haven't the faintest idea where to stick the hook... And the arthritis in my right wrist is very painful - I may have to play the uke while all of you are playing hooky.....:(
Geri I am the same on the second row, my hook goes into one then into a diff spot in the next chain lol but we will get there

Some of the flowers I already completed for the War Memorial 100 year commemoration. The ends have been left loose so the flowers can be sewn or tied on to something.
