Learn to crochet?

That’s very neat @champers

The puff stitch looks complicated but is actually very simple, just a case of wrapping the yarn over multiple times @movan Your circle may turn in to a square with more rows, my giant granny squares started off looking more like a circle.

@movan

If you want a bit of crochet 20 stitches (chains) long make 21 stitches, as you loose one turning.

Make a chain of 10 stitches, one side the stitches are smooth-

On the back they are bumpy, you work into these bumps.
Put your hook into the second bump from the hook.(effectively loosing one stitch)

Crochet each stitch into each bump.
Crochet to the end of the line & you will have 9 stitches-

Turn the work and make one chain, this is the turning chain,
The first stitch after the turning chain goes into the base of the turning chain,

always put the hook under the two top threads of each stitch.

Work to the end you will still have 9 stitches

I have used a thick wool & a big hook and done it very loose to try to show the stitches.
Don’t forget if you want 10 stitches make a chain of 11 so you loose 1 chain when you turn to do the first row.

Every time you turn make one chain after turning and the first stitch goes into the base of the turning chain

Don’t worry if it goes a funny shape, it’s all in the tensions which you will get in time.
Once you’ve got the hang of it, make a scarf!
Good luck.

Going to try again now. :)

You may have noticed that after my initial enthusiasm for this thread, I went a bit quiet.... Don't panic @movan and @Carol - it's nothing bad.....

I can now utter a very loud WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

1. Our Little'un is in the last three months of his second Degree. It's an NHS Mental Health Nursing Degree, and he went for his first job interview today - with the Crisis Team at the 2gether NHS Trust in Gloucester. They rang him (after he thought he had messed the interview up) and told him he was the preferred candidate and that he had got the job!!!

He had spent 3 months on placement there and loved it. Saying that, every placement he did, be it Early Intervention, Psychosis Management or Dementia - he loved, so it really wouldn't have mattered where he got a job - he would have loved, and thrived in any one.

@haganap - Paul, I know you'll think it strange to be tagged into a crocheting thread, but it was your advice 3 years ago that started our Rob on the road to Mental Health Nursing, so I thought you'de like to see the fruits of our discussion.... (y)

2. My mum, who has lived in sheltered housing for 15 years and has suffered isolation and depression, went with me today to look at a flat in an Extra Care Housing scheme in Keynsham - spelt K E Y N S H A M. It is just the most beautiful place - the sun floods into the flat which overlooks a green open space where people walk dogs, children play, and my local pub where I play darts is just down the lane. There are activities going on every day, a restaurant where she can sit and eat with other people, a kitchen garden where she can sit and supervise.....just beautiful. If she gets the flat she can start to live again, instead of just existing - WHAT AM I SAYING..... After an assessment next week, (where I'm reliably informed she will pass with flying colours), the flat is hers!!!!!!!

Soooooooo, I can now uncross my fingers and start crocheting!!!!!

@Mousy - will you join me in a WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!

Photos of crocheting disasters to follow.....

@cliffandger
Absolutely bloody fantastic news...

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Now stop slouching and get that yarn out...

@cliffandger Ger thank you for shareing no wonder you had your fingers crossed and what a great outcome.

I've got no photos because mine has been done and undone so many times but it's all practice, I'll not give up.

Oh no. Dreaming about it and going potty ... . Not usually a quitter but wondering whether life is too short for me to learn .. I'm rubbish... My four leaf clover type squares are just pointed jumbles of wooly knots. :(

Giving it a break until tonight. Can't believe some people actually make stuff without even staring at their work!!!!!

Went to a meet once where the men did the strip dance You can take your hat off and stripped down to willie warmers ... (you know who you are) :) ... one of the funster ladies had crocheted them all!!! Now realise how amazing she was.

I was impressed by the different sizes she crocheted - they definitely weren't 'one size fits all'......

Joy don’t despair :hugs:I’m feeling the same I hate quitting so I’ve decided I’m not going to get stressed about it and put it down as soon as it goes wrong then go back to it when I’m in a better frame of mind:hugs:

Please don't give up - even if your chain and starting row are not to your liking and even if you have fewer stitches move on. Do several rows just to get the rhythm. @Shrimp has produced some clear pictures which should help you to keep the number of stitches. Don't pull out your work. Keep it for a souvenir.

I will take pictures of two granny squares I am working with the tapestry skeins. The first one went wrong using three chains before each treble group IMO too loopy, so I modified the way I was doing it and the second picture shows the version where there is one chain between the side trebles and two chains between the two corner trebles.

@joy You have done the perfect start to a granny square according to some patterns. The circle turns into a square once you work three trebles chain and three trebles into the same space. I would suggest you start with 4 chain and join with a slip stitch. Work 5 chain (which will count as one treble and 3 chain) then work three trebles and 2 chain into the centre of the ring. Do 3tr (trebles) 2ch(chain) three times. Then two tr and a slip stitch to the 3rd of 5ch.

Result - first row finished. The two chain are for the corners so you now know that the corners are where you put the 3tr 2ch 3tr.

Off you go and good luck.

Now don’t try running before you can walk or you’ll be joining me and Joy in dunces corner:giggler:

@cliffandger Great News from you. Are you able to send the instructions to Joy, I think she has actually conquered crochet. If you should need instructions for willie warmers they were done by Anne. If you need her forum name @Jez and Lin will have it. Multi-coloured stripes.;)

This is such a lovely thread! You have inspired me. I have a selection of crochet hooks and a selection of crochet cotton just waiting for me to pick them up and make a start. Thank you!

Hello JackieP If your crochet cotton is finer than double knit you could go down a size in crochet hook. Try 3.5.
Cotton is lovely to work and much less stretchy than wool or acrylic. Let us know how you're getting on.

Hello it’s me again
The square with the ghastly cplours is the one I dislike

The second, using the same colour for the first two rounds has 2 chain spaces at the corners and 1 chain on the sides.

I remember doing the squares like that when I was a teenager so why can’t I get my head round it now ........I’m beginning to wonder if it’s the hook (I know a bad workman blames his tools) it doesn’t seem to have much of a hook on the end I’m going to go to a craft shop in Llandeilo to see what I can get.

Hello all you FCC members , I’ve been busy with my new EBike ‘Zippy’!!
I am starting again with a lighter lilac coloured wool as I find the dark purple difficult in the electric light ! ( my excuse and I’m sticking to it!!) thanks for all your help !
@cliffandger lovely news about your Roband congratulation gone tonight!
@snailtrailer auntie Pam hope you are feeling well at home!

When I went back downstairs to my table there were two ladies on the next table discussing the latest handbag that one of them had crocheted and added crocheted roses!!!!

How amazing was that. :)

@movan

Noooooo I didn't do that! That's what I hope I can do one day.. :)

I can only do a slip stitch
A chain
A turning stitch
Single crochet lines ...now making bit straighter edges.. :)

Yes .. your notes helped but .. wait for it... Met 2 ladies in the cafe today who are both experts ... I left them arguing with each other. Lol.

I mentioned that I couldn't understand whether I should make my first stitch on a row INTO the turning stitch or the first FULL stitch (v shape) ...

Oh dear. One did and one didn't .... they ended up sounding like our thread here discussing how many stitches would be left on a row if you did or didn't .. ha ha ..

The result of both their finished products was beautiful.....
