Learn to crochet?

I was impressed by the different sizes she crocheted - they definitely weren't 'one size fits all'......

When I worked in the daycentre one man loved to knit - one Christmas he made warmers for all the other gentlemen ...... most were very kind to him and thanked him but one of the less diplomatic said "Huh, that won't fit me, it's too long and too wide and will fall off" and then he (the recipient) wondered why we all started to giggle!!!!

@cliffandger geraldine and cliff for your Rob congratulations,

I forgot this photo, sorry. It makes me determined to stick at it when I see stuff like this.

Do you think we will ever be able to do anything remotely like those Joy

I hope so. At the end of the day I feel despondent .. :( Decide I might give up.

Then the following day I remember it took me five or more minutes to be confident in doing a slip knot .. and decide... no REFUSE .... to give up. :)

Likewise, remember when learning to drive ... didn't have enough hands, confusion of feet, ........ together WE WILL DO IT. XX

Thanks Anthea. He came home for a couple of hours today and I couldn't help it..... I said congratulations on the job, but you still have an 8000 word dissertation and a presentation to do whilst working shifts on the final placement...... He just smiled and said what he always says 'mother, you can't hurry genius' - genius he ain't - unfortunately his 'modus operandi' is to leave everything till the last minute.

I have never wanted anything to be over as much as I've wanted this Degree to be over - although it's been a brilliant teaching experience (so much better value than his first Degree, for which he is £26000 in debt) and he has loved every bit of it, he has moved back home, so that he can save for a house deposit with his girlfriend, and he's reverted to type - not doing anything until he's been nagged and nagged by me - bad enough as a teenager but he's 26 and just as bad.....!

@joy Your photos look lovely. The pink yarn with its sparkle really does bring crochet out of the fuddy-duddy into a new era. If you look clearly chain stitch feature and a bobble stitch, maybe puff stitch or popcorn which is basically trebles worked into the same space.

Looking back at the earlier thread I gave instructions on trebles. A good stitch because your crochet grows quickly.

How do you stop the stitches from falling off the end?

@cliffandger Go back and read the instructions Geraldine. You don't collect the stitches, you deal with each one in turn. So far I think there only pictures of a starting chain. Good luck, you'll soon catch up.

@cliffandger love it but I think that's knitting xx I'm sure one of our lady's who know can help, x

Edit: just seen Pam has answered. x

On Monday I had never used a crochet hook.
By Tuesday night I wished I hadn’t seen this thread.
On Wednesday, after a few hours, I crocheted a chain I was fairly happy with, and about a hundred I wasn’t.
Thursday I changed to less fluffy yarn and a bigger hook, and swapped to Purple.
Friday, I seemed to get the hang of it, and I crocheted this. . . . It must have been the purple that did it!

50p for scale!
Struggling with the yarn tension though, and I know there are a few mistakes.
I found the Bella Coco video ‘Granny Squares for absolute beginners’ on you tube and that’s how I did the square.
So, thank you Pam. I have a new hobby!

Carol, I started again and I think I've worked out how it was done. I've just done another chain and have gone back down it.

However, I now have to find the instructions again as I haven't the faintest idea where to stick the hook... And the arthritis in my right wrist is very painful - I may have to play the uke while all of you are playing hooky.....:(

Anne - I swear that was no joke! :( I think I've worked it out now, but I have no idea how to do the third row ......

Confession . . .i did absolutely nothing else, it has taken all day, lots of unravelling and a few throws across the room!

That looks really neat Gerri, just turn around at the end and go back, doing the slip stich (I think). x

Since we have started doing this thread I've got interested more in seeing what can be done one little piece at a time found some amazing things, so I will persevere
These flowers are beautiful to me so much potential. I expect it will take time but our crochet needles at any meets will become addictive I'm sure.

This was made by my husbands grandmother. We think it’s around 100 years old. I thought it was made on Bobbin’s, like lace, but looking again, I think it’s crochet with very fine thread. It’s on the dresser and still looks like new.

And that's what people did before they had telly! Just gorgeous.

We shall be moving mum (Fingers crossed) to her new flat in a couple of weeks, and hopefully clearing her cupboards of years of accumulated stuff. She probably still has the crochet blankets that my gran (my dad's mum) made - I remember her making them all the time, one after another, and every son and daughter (of which there were seven) took turns in receiving one - We all had one on our beds, and she had a total of 25 grandchildren.......

Not sure if mum has kept any (gran was the mother in law from Hell...) but if she has I will take a photo!

Loving this thread and seeing everyone’s progress and creations. Some of the examples found are so beautiful.

For your amusement only (and with Dave’s permission :) ) I present my first finished hat. I like the idea but this has ended up child size really, I have a lot to learn about tension etc. ;) I am now attempting to make it again with a different wool.
