Keep left when not overtaking!

Quite a few years ago some friends arrived late having driven up from Sussex.
Apparently they were late because having gone through the M25 tunnel they could not find the 'right' turn for the M11???

Geoff

Which also contavines the Highway Code

110 let them know you are there, would be my reason for flashing. It doesn’t have to be done in an aggressive way, if they don’t get the hint, then truck horn blast 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪 and watch the offender jump out if the way 👍🏻👍🏻

What about those idiots who when turning left at a junction swan neck into the outer lane, is it how new drivers are trained to turn left. They take no account of any vehicle on their offside.
Becasue they are following the "racing line", have you not seeen Hamilton or Verstappen?

Either that or the have forgotten that they have taken that 40ft trailer off the back of their vehicle!!!

This comes up often, but I can never see why folks can't just overtake normally instead of undertaking, what is the harm going out to the outside lane, as I thought that used to be called the overtaking lane, what is it now just empty?
Only allowed in that lane if you have a german car. Most of which seem to have a switch rather than a graduated accelerator pedal ::bigsmile:

Some drivers do not, or, cannot read the road ahead.

If you are rolling along in lane 1 of a three lane motorway, and on your left is a vehicle coming along a joining slip road, then you should anticipate what it is going to do.

Am I going slower than it, and will it join the MW ahead of me? Am I going faster, and will it join the MW behind me? In which case I can safely stay in lane 1. Or, is it matching my speed, then should I move into lane 2, to let it join lane 1 comfortably, or, adjust my speed if I can't move into lane 2?

But, NO. Many 'drivers' have a mind set of, 'I am in 'my' lane, doing 'my' speed, and no-one is going to alter that at any cost! The 'lane 2 owners club member' is not going to let anyone pull out of lane 1, nor let anyone join from a slip road, if it means they have to adjust their 'driving'.

Craig
May I suggest you read the highway code, it is up to the person entering the motorway to make speed adjustments to join safely.

As f ar as I am aware you are allowed to undertake if the lanes on your right are travelling slower than the lane you are in, I just do not know if this only applies when vehicles are queuing on all three/four lanes

In the same way that overtaking (unless you’re a middle Lane hogger) requires a Lane change, an undertake also requires a Lane change (I.e. a move to the left).

Maintaining your position (and speed) in a Lane to the left of a middle Lane hogger isn’t an undertake; it is simply maintaining progress. 👍

Ian

Right, if I am the only one in the middle lane and lorry's in lane one I am doing 70, have I got to keep weaving in and out, just because I am supposed to be in the left lane.
Sounds crackers to me.

? If you're in the middle lane you're in the right lane to overtake a lorry in lane 1

But, if you're weren't already in the middle lane due to partially completing the last overtake, you're a middle lane hog (y)

And why would "weaving in and out" be a thing?
If you're a half decent motorist, you're in lane 1, looking a head 500m to 1km or more. You see a lorry you'll need to overtake.
Now a bunch of seconds later, you're within 200m of the lorry,
Time now to Look in mirrors to check traffic.
It's clear, so indicate and make a slight adjustment to steering direction so drift over to lane 2.
When a) you see the lorry fully behind you in the centre mirror - or side mirror if you've adjusted for "objects are nearer than they look" or b) you've been flashed as clear by he lorry driver, indicate and make a slight adjustment to steering direction to drift back over to lane 1.

^^ Is the ideal for light traffic when you can cruise at the same speed for all the manoeuvre.

It will need adjusting for heavier traffic with middle lane hogs that'll mean you may need to adjust your speed at key times 🤷‍♂️

It's hardly weaving.

Whoa!
I'm pretty sure the Highway Code says it is upto the driver joining the motorway to give way. Or, using your example, to adjust their speed according to the traffic already in lane1.

I try to "drive ahead" and will often move out into lane2 as I approach an entry slip, assuming lane2 is clear for a reasonable distance behind me. I will also assess the speed of the vehicle on the slip road and drive defensively. BUT that is "common sense", not a requirement.

I'm afraid sense isn't common.

Craig

It all goes to show there are lots and lots of shit drivers around .
Im not perfect in any way but like to think i know whats going on around me on any road im on.
Just drive defensively and as if everyone else near you is trying to kill you.
Be careful out there.(y)(y)

Maybe. A good rule of thumb is if someone in an ordinary car (i.e. not a Lamborghini) could be behind at your speed, but accelerate to undertake you and get back out again, then you should move over.

Remember, the constant checking in your rear view mirror to see if anyone else is behind you will distract you from the road ahead ;)

A lot of rules do, but we're obliged to obey.

I would think you are constantly checking your mirror wherever you are on the road.

Their are a lot of people about these days that don’t have a sodding clue about road sense or how to treat any type of road, shocking and most I see everyday deserves points and a fine.

Regarding entering or leaving a motorway the roads leading to and from a motorway are subject to the same laws and speeds the motorway itself, therefore entering a motorway you use the slip road to increase your speed to match a gap and road speeds and then join.

Those that think people in the inside lane must move out of the way are all lunatics and I have seen to many accidents by bad driving, and it’s the same for leaving a motorway where you don’t slow down on entering a slip road the speeds are still 70mph and you use the slip road to decrease your speed not on the motorway.

Flashing lights are to warn other road users of your presences and that’s it.

Hogging a middle or outside lane an offence and you will get 3 points and £100 fine and classed as careless driving.

Winds me up big time 🤬

My sister once went the long way round the M25 from M40 to the M1 junctions..... !

People that get wound up so easily about such things are probably more danger than someone just being in the wrong lane for a minute or two.

Are you aware that anyone with a dash am that has video evidence of law breaking as this middle lane hogger you can send the video to the Police direct for possible prosecution through the courts.

For example anyone in Wales can just do this via: https://gosafesnap.wales

No not really, if everyone followed the Highway Code and the rules of the road no one would have the need to complain.

But you wouldn’t be ‘just the only one’ if there isn’t anyone else within a mile of you then it wouldn’t matter, but if your doing 70, it won’t take long for someone doing 90 to catch up with you. Yes, I know 90 is illegal but it’s the norm for Audi’s and BMW‘s and do you really want one if those idiots stuffing you up the arse, because they are texting ? 🥴🥴🥴

Are you sure this was on your Fordson Major:giggle::giggle::giggle:

Geoff

PS: My International 414 can get up to 16mph, on a good day.

I have a McCormick 276 which is the same as a into 434, my favourite tractor , do all my field work with it.

My 414 has to do everything: Rolling, mowing. loading, towing etc etc.. It is 1965 but still starts first time after about 45 seconds of pre-heat. It has less than 8000 hours on the clock.

This is much more interesting than talking about which motorway lane I should be in:yawn::yawn::yawn:

Geoff

Years ago a car came through the central reservation towards me. I was pootling along on lane one. If I hadn't been I doubt I'd be typing this now. Always played the safety percentages just on case ever since.
