Keep left when not overtaking!

I normally cruise at 65mph because that gives me 2100-2200 rpm which if I sustain it gets me up most hills in 5th gear.

It also means that I am overtaking trucks on their limiters at 56mph. If I overtake one truck and see another one 2-300 metres in front I do not pull in, because if there is traffic I could get trapped on the inside lane at 56mph for a while, and when there is a gap to overtake the second truck I have to drop down to 4th to do it and rev hard to get back to 65mph to change up to 5th.

If I stay out in lane 2 to overtake the second truck, even though it is 300m ahead, is that 'lane hogging' ?

Geoff

I don’t think so.

Because most are sitting on cruise control while on the phone or doing other activities. Ive passed many a truck with the driver sat with something on the steering wheel paying it more attention. Ive also had many right up my arse when ive been going up an incline in motorhome. They don't like to brake
Too right! There's nothing that boils my p!#$ more than having to slow down in the truck once I've got the cruise control on, the TV is plugged in and tuned to daytime TV, the coffee makers brewing and I've got me sarnies all laid out onbthe table. I'm far too busy to be watching out for other slow moving vehicles. ;)

Just out of curiosity, anyone know the legalities of undertaking on a motorway ? For instance, lane 2,3 and 4 ( M1 up here) with cars doing 65 mph.
Im doing 70 , lane one clear .
As stated earlier the Highway Code has all the answers.
No not stricly illegal but not encouraged.
One exception is where in heavy traffic and inside lane going faster than next lane you are allowed to keep up with traffic in your lane and effectively under take the next lane.

Too many drivers have absolutely no road craft.
It's a chore to them.
As for lane hogging, yes it is "illegal", but who on earth are going to police it. The toy cops don't/wont.
I also want to defend the truck driver. They drive for 10,000s thousands of miles a year amonst all the knob heads. For me they are probably the safest drivers on the road.
There my bit.
Oh by the way, i am probably the best driver in the wooorrrld.

Talking of which I think the new highway code is out on 29 January, loads of changes and clarifications ..

Safest until they get 2 feet behind you pushing when you’ve nowhere to go because of the middle lane joggers 😜 frightens me to death when they get so close, I have to turn my rear view camera off 😂

I do undertake where safe.

You should have pointed him in the direction of Highway Code Rule 268 which says he was wrong.
As stated.. in some situations if moving in slow traffic and your lane going faster than one on right you can under take.

There should be a 'test' on motorway driving, as part of the driving test. There isn't, so Mr knob head, passes his test, and on the motorway he goes. This is so wrong!

I was an HGV driver for years, UK, Europe, and Middle East, and to get a 32 ton load moving, it takes time, and if you lose momentum, it is frustrating, so, I can understand the trucks 'seeming' to take ages to overtake another.

On this forum, some time ago, there was a thread something along the lines of, 'doesn't anyone give way at the end of a slip road anymore'? This highlights the knowledge of some people who use motorways. I pointed out to the person that there has never, ever, been a 'give way' at the end of a slip road.

As for 'middle lane owners club' members, well, you can't teach the stupid.

why bother overtaking?
Hi
You are going faster...... You have caught up with them.
" Number TWO....Starts the QUEUE "
On a lighter note. After about 5 or 6 hours, you have read all there is to read on the back of that lorry, different drivers different rythms and they could be going to off load where you are going............. More time wasted on a tight schedule.... Go by train, they don't overtake- carry wide or high loads, job sorted. ;) .
Tea Bag.

It is really annoying,

. Maybe some do it i because the middle and outside lane surfaces are smoother?

A lot of drivers don’t like to see a car in front of them, how many cars overtake just to be ahead of you but never go any faster!
I‘m not convinced the driving lessons are up to it either, when I had mine ***years ago I was told it wasn’t necessary to indicate on a roundabout!

I know of two drivers who have both admitted that they are scared to change lanes on motorways so they stay in lane 2. My answer to both was to tell them to give up driving as they were not safe.

I too get peed of with the idiot lane hoggers. Appears to be a Brit thing even the French have better lane discipline nearly all over Europe they behave much better on motorways than the majority of Brits. Shame they don't behave on normal roads
Travelling through France on motorway a motorcyclist signalled us to move over from the middle lane, Mrs Driver said’ “what is he doing this bloke on the blue motorbike. ? Idiot.”
I explained the word ‘gendarmerie’ to her……

Most motorways nowadays seem to tell you to hog a lane, usually accompanied by loads of 50mph average speed signage, millions of cones, speed cameras and nobody doing any roadworks.

I can never understand how these big companies take on multi-million pound road improvement projects and only employ 4 people to do all the work.

In my experience I agree, the French have excellent lane manners when on a 'normal' Autoroute with two lanes, but as soon as you get to three lanes they lane hog in the middle just as bad as we do.
Not too bad as undertaking is allowed.

Lane hogging on single track with passing places up in Scotland !
Why do so many motorhomers not pull over in a passing place and let faster vehicles pass?
There are enough signs instructing them to do so.

I think the issue is that motorway driving is not examined during the driving test so all new drivers first experience of motorway driving is AFTER they pass their test and they are very unlikely to get decent instruction/tuition from relatives who don’t know what they’re doing either!

All sorts do it. Gotta say, in my experience, mostly older drivers.
