Jane & Rog’s retirement tour, Morocco 2023

Could be that they have done a bit if stop/starting moving the van about whilst having the lights on front bumper disconnected, that may throw a fault up. An OBD reader would be useful to see what the fault code is and possibly it just needs a reset 👍🏻

Yeah :)

No error codes on the Webasto btw, if anyone out there is an expert. The LED is lit as normal, but heating is not happening.
If the the error light comes on in ours we flick the switch a few times. (It’s a rocker switch) it re sets the thing 🤷‍♀️
As for the engine light, well, Ralphs had a right farce with his work van. The units actually been sent off and Re-set twice now. Not a cheap fix.
Neither worked so it’s ended up being by-passed , think he said that as I wasn’t really listening.
This has resulted in the engine blowing out smelly white smoke. After been told that’d stop after a good run, and him going to Hull and back , catterick and back (from Pickering) and it still spewing. It’s back in the garage and he’s using his pick-up for work.
Hope you get it sorted and it looks like a fabulous job they’ve made of the paintwork btw.

White smoke used to mean blown head gasket allowing water into cylinders!

That’s what Ralph thought 😳 but they said it’d just burn off. 🤷‍♀️ it didn’t hence going back in. He’s hoping they sort it out soon, as he prefers his van to drive in.

Rog is off trying to get a new SIM again. I’ll point him at all your help when he gets back, thanks everyone!

The engine warning is steady yellow but the van is in limp home mode - so it probably won’t get out of this valley on its own . I did disconnect the battery this morning but not for 30 mins - I’ve seen others say 1 hour but no explanation of why so long. Whatever it’s disconnected now - so is leisure battery in case that resets the Webasto🤞

My idea re respect was paint in an air filter. Maybe…

I did look at those videos but I’m very wary of blowing through the expensive Maroc Telecom data and the one I did watch was useless :-)

I like the comment on that video about super lows to super highs. That’s exactly our life right now:
Great site, cheap! Friendly! Mountains!
Crash
Nice respray! Cheap!
van limps home

There are a number of vehicle dealerships in Agadir, not far from the Carrefour hypermarket. I remember SUGGY having problems with the EGR valve on his van. The coke tin frig gave up the ghost eventually, and the new part was dispatched from Casablanca to Agadir and duly fitted.

If you’re a bit jittery about heights I’d suggest going back to Agadir on the R104 via Tiznit rather than the R105, it’s less bum clenching.

Bonus of going that way is the off licence adjacent to the Hotel Tiznit by the roundabout where the N1 and R104 meet. 👍. Have you tried the Touareg red yet, it’s a cracking wine?

Yes, the plan is to go that way as me having a heart attack is not ideal. Thanks for the recommendation, will try that.

Forgot to mention. A memorable restaurant in Tafraout is La Kasbah, it’s on the right on the R107, just a short walk from the roundabout in town as if you were heading for the Blue Rocks. Their Harissa soup is to die for.

Cracking paint job...it's unfortunate that we get so pleased when someone (abroad) does a great job, quickly, at a reasonable cost, when they said it would be done.....we found the same service in Vietnam on motorbike trips, anything could be fixed immediately at the side of the road. Keep the thread going it's great !! :clap2:

We ate there on the first night. It was excellent though service was very slow even for Morocco. They apologised so obviously out of the norm.

Some years ago in our ducato we started off in the morning and there was an amber light on the dash and it wouldnt go above 30mph, so I pulled over and read through the hand book and realised I had turned the cruise control knob 2 notches/turns and not the 1 ( into the off position ) so it put the van into a mode that restricts you to 30mph !

To be honest, I’d probably be more surprised / pleased to get the same standard at home.

Last night, driving back from the paint-shop, Denby’s engine check light came on and he’s in limp home mode. This morning, our our Webasto diesel heater isn’t working. And it’s cold outside!

Rog chatted to the campsite owner, and he called a different someone from yesterday’s someone. The new someone looked at the van and said he’d come back this afternoon at 3pm.

Rather than sit and wait, we did another hike in the hills - actually through the only navigable pass in the mountains behind the site through to the Ameln Valley. This is famous for its 26 villages clinging to the slopes of the mountains, and we had a good view of two of them.

After a picnic lunch, we retraced our steps back to Denby - there wasn’t a decent, non-road route back that we could do in the time.

There was an email from my sister-in-law saying there were complications with Dad, and scans to be done. She has also managed to get his phone to him, so I swapped back to my UK SIM for a phone call. Dad sounded a little confused, but not as weak as I feared. It was good to be able to chat to him.

While we were waiting for the engineers, Rog fixed the heater! So at least we’ll be warm when we’re stuck in Morocco!

Eventually, at nearly 5pm, the new someone came back with a younger someone, who was equipped with a laptop and the Fiat diagnostic doohicky. (Apologies for the technical terms - Rog and I are software engineers by trade, and though Rog is a man and therefore able to keep up, I am rubbish at cars.)

The campsite owner came out and there was a massive, shouting argument with new someone in Arabic. Rog and I had to walk away and be English in embarrassment in few metres away.

Younger someone installed software, and upgraded firmware. He turned out to be doing this in his spare time - his day job was working on radar defence systems!

He then had to fetch a different laptop from home base, update more software, and then finally we had a diagnostic - the turbo charger was reporting an overload error.

For now, the error has been reset, in case this was caused by anything from the altitude, the dryness of the air, or even the bump / respray. We are to drive today, preferably putting the engine under load, and see if the error returns. If it does, the turbo will have to be fixed.

We paid a fairly chunky 600 dirhams to the radar engineer, and started to make dinner. At which point the campsite owner came over, apologised again for how late the engineers had been (this was what the massive row had been about) and introduced his wife to me. She shook hands with me, and dropped something into my palm, saying “cadeau” - it was a pair of gold hoop earrings!

We are wishing we’d bought things from home to use as presents. This chap (must find out his name today!) has been so helpful.

Apparently the exact sensor error was “P0238 Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Sensor "A" Circuit High”

I’m really enjoying your thread. We went to Morocco some years ago (pre van days) and really enjoyed it. Seeing the real Morocco off the bea track was the best!
Glad you got the engine warning light reset, fingers crossed it doesn’t reoccur. And I’m glad you got the heater fixed!

would be a good idea to invest in a obd reader like this.

Autel Autolink AL319 OBD II/EOBD Code Reader Amazon product ASIN B007XE8C74
Then you could at least diagnose the fault with a bit of Googling.
Thanks - annoyingly we have one at home. It will come with us next time!
