Ian and helga go south !!

You know you want to really!!!!

(we just want a laugh at your expense) Lol!

Ian, I can completely understand your want/need to work whether for self gratification or financial stability. I would love the opportunity to work through the summer and travel through the winter but my job won't allow that. Alan could do it as he's got an HGV licence and could work via agency again, also if we could get the daughter out of the house we could rent it out (very healthy rental market here) but that ain't gonna happen anytime soon ::bigsmile:

Do what you feel you need to do, only you can make that decision and if it also helps out your mate then well done you, all power to your elbow. (y)

Keep posting though, we want to know what you get up to and there must be plenty of building related funny incidents to tell ;)

Totally understand where Ian is coming from .I gave up work at 57 to become a fulltime carer for my mother who has unfortunately since died .
I do not have to work and have many projects stored away for when I retire but could not settle down and missed the challenge of working.
I spent most of my working life self employed doing a huge range of engineering work which I thoroughly enjoyed I only took on work which was challenging and bigger companies not interested in . I am now back doing the same and love the challenge , but always remember you can lay in bed and loose money don't go and work hard to do it.

Totally agree! That's why I suggested, working there, on and off, so that you are where it is good but not running down your nest egg, but filling it up as you go, here you are in danger of spending as fast as you earn it.
Unfortunately if there was work here to enable a living I'd be doing some :) & 2 million+ Spaniards wouldn't be working in other eu countries. Things are supposedly getting better here yet they are still leaving in droves.

@ianthebuilder

I think we all feel we know you quite well by now from your posts on here.

You're a decent, generous, honourable, hard working guy who says it like it is. With the ability to make us laugh and want to keep tuning in for more.

We'd love to read the thread where you meet your 'girl for life'. We feel she'd be a lucky lady and your travels would take on a new dimension. Get back on the dating sites in May, tell us about the disasters and we'll all give you encouragement to keep at it.

Good luck with everything.

And there is the rub...he does not stay in one area long enough to establish friendships or relationships. Staying in one place allows this to evolve naturally. Just like moving house you have to give a new area time! Essential over winter when most places pretty quite...except Benidorm!!!!

Ian, like many others, I have been following your thread with great interest because 18 months ago I'd planned, and booked the ferry, to spend a few months in Spain like you have done. Unfortunately, events happened and like the queen, I had a real 'annus horribilis' which meant my plans have had to be postponed until September/October this year.

Reckless, you have very succinctly said exactly what I was thinking.

Waking up without a purpose or a plan I am truly struggling with!! I know I have never been more relaxed in my life, but it's the boredom of just another day that has made me realise I need to work !!

40 years ago my wife and I left England in a small boat (never sailed before). We crossed from Dover to Calais (with help), went though the French Canals to the Med eventually ending up in Mallorca 6 months later, with many 'disasters' on the way.

Lived cheap on the boat and found well-paid work. After a couple of years we decided to return to the UK.

Why did you give up that lifestyle?, I was often asked - I'd answer that "you get fed up of eating strawberries everyday", so I understand how you feel.

Came back to the UK to live and work but still have friends in Mallorca from the crazy times 40 years ago and boringly, I also like working.......

............ remember the lintels I needed in Mallorca? - quoted £2.5k by a local contractor, job done for £500 by a legal ex-pat(y)

Good luck to you(y)

She better hurry up!! I ain't got that long left!!!! Lol

Ian, I used to be a plumber and had to retire due to illness. I think a lot of the funtimes and laughs in my life were when I was on different sites taking the piss and generally the camaraderie of loads of characters I used to know. Keep working as long as you can, its good for your sanity and of course the money is a bonus. Live long and prosper. Right, I'm off to find something to do. Good luck Ian

Absolutely, I don't want to keep harping on about it, (might have done too much already) but he does seem to jump about a lot changes his mind by the hour, where's the German gone, Ian says he hasn't spoke to anyone under 75 for weeks but he isn't that old, his golfing mates , his mate that was flying over , jo, not for us to say, he is doing his own thing and good on him but he does seem to be a bit flighty, almost like he's trying to sort some chapters out for a book.
He has seen a few towns and stuff, but can't see how he wouldn't have been better off staying with jo and getting the real feel of Spain while having someone to share it with and also got a foot into a bit of work.
Just my opinion, doesn't meen anything to anyone, and everyone is different.

When you travel on your own it's like that sometimes.....flighty! Especially if you have left an unhappy situation. I have found just being on the road a good distraction. last time I did it I ended up at Nordkapp.......only way is South, back to civilisation from there (y)

Not denying that , never been there so can't really say, was just how it looks to me, and I am probably wrong, Ian has to do what he wants, nothing to do with anyone else.(y):)

I travel on my own with my two dogs, it's amazing how much company they are. It means my journeys need more planning so the places we stop are good for them. The older one definitely appreciated my efforts, he won't get out of the van when we get home!

I know I can't have a conversation with them, and thankfully they can't answer back, but I still feel less silly saying "What a lovely morning" even if it is to a dog or two!

I think he would enjoy a month on a winter rally in SPAIN..We always do 4 to 8 weeks on C&C Club rally on Almafra..... probably 4 to 6 guys on there travelling solo,,Its a low key rally no pressure but you can always find company in the bar without feeling like an outsider...Some really great people live on there full time..BUABY.

Of course you can have a conversation with them - look at this lady!

The big thing is, where's he got to today, said he was going to Gibraltar, did he get there, did he get out(n):)

Good evening!!! Lol. I just read the above posts!!! Cor chaser give me a break, I don't know or care where I'm going from one day to the next!! I can appreciate that it might be all over the place but that's what it is!!

The Germans gone home to sell and sign the paperwork!! I ain't never spoke to brewery Dave, Jo lives in the back of beyond and 5 weeks in one place was more than enough! But what a dodgy day I've had!! And all my own fault!!!

I will explain,, ( if you don't mind me writing like it may be a chapter in a book chaser) lol.

I set of this morning about 9,30 for a campsite in Marbella!! ( I really didn't fancy Gibraltar again) I was plodding along lovely for an hour, stopped for some diesel and filled up just before estapona,, for the first time ever I put one of those plastic gloves on to fill( cause a lot of the pumps are dripping with it). Filled up, threw glove away, went in and paid and carried on.

Got to the campsite at Marbella, had a look, didn't fancy it!! So I looked in my book and saw a site along a bit in fuengerola!! So I made for it!!

Got to site about 12,30 a nice relaxed drive, booked in got sorted with electric, put kettle on and put helga up on ramps!! While walking over to check the passenger door was locked I saw that I had no diesel cap, oh I said to myself, didn't do it up right , must have fallen off,, got me tea and sat down about to pick up phone and post and thought,, where are my spare keys!!

Well it seems when I remembered , I didn't put cap back on, so keys and cap left at garage,, cap no problem but I need the spare keys cause my other van keys are on it!! Fortunately I had kept receipt which has address on it but no phone no!!

Got all packed up and started off to the garage,, again !! Kept going, thought I'd be clever and retrace my steps but like a nob I went into the wrong lane somewhere me Marbella and ended up on a toll motorway, straight past estapona and to God knows where!! Got of toll at first opportunity, cost me 3 euros,, pulled up put sat nav on and put in estapona,, back on motorway1,70 euros to get on, and kept driving,, alternate route!! Straight into estapona town where I didn't want to be but the sat nav didn't give me the original route, I'm getting losses of with myself by now ,, so I pulled up and got a cab driver to take me ( I followed) to the address on receipt! 10 Mins later and 15 euros lighter I entered the garage,, different bloke on till, didn't speak English so I tried my best sign language with keys and cap from water tank to explain!! Then I saw it!! It was on the window Coll in the garage behind him,, much pointing and billeting going on and he then realised ,, they were mine and he passed them over!!
I was well pleased!!

So I then put coords in for campsite again and the bloody thing took me on a different route back, through Marbella town centre amongst other places!!

So now I'm back,, from an easy 2 and a bit hours drive, I am now having a brew, posting this, and the time is 6,30.

Helga really enjoyed the exercise, but I'm knackered, I will be going for a drink tonight , to sample the delights of fuengerola, and I may just have a few too many!!!

I know I would like a cuppa with Gus Lopez on my way, and I'm going to Totana also for a day or two,, and I may even stop and give Benidorm another shot for a day or two!! Who knows chaser? Lol. Who knows!!!!! Hope you've all had a good day!!

One more adventure to add to your (growing) memoirs! There is also a campsite between Marbella and Calahonda, on the main road, but it looked awful when I walked past it a couple of years ago. However, the beaches there are great. Enjoy Fuengirola!

Hey ho way to go Ian :) Chaser will tell you where you went wrong no doubt!

Rob

At least the cap and keys were waiting there!! Think how you would have felt after all that journey and they were gone!! No don't !! Have a yorkie tea then a few beers!!(y) Sorry but made me laugh!!

Ian ,mate, I'm not judging or knocking just saying how it looks to me, you just keep doing what you want, where you want, another chapter today , hey(y):)

I know your not mate, and I can appreciate how fraustrating it may seem to you, but I've never done this, ever, and doing it on my own is ok,, but cause I don't have someone to plan with or for, mate, I change my mind at the drop of a hat!! I personally love it like this,,, I might not go out tonight! But then I might,, lol. Xx

Afternoon Ian, just had half an hour catch up with you after running the Rally at Chester, for 110 Funster Vans, you may not have been there but you would not believe in conversation how many people said to me have you seen Ian the Builders thread, think you must be doing something right Ian you have had people looking at your thread 153,599 times and 2,964 posts on the thread, keep going as you are it's a winning formula .

The plan to come back to the UK to do some work and catch up with family seems like a solid idea and with Helga of course you have total freedom where you choose to work, enjoy each day regardless of how many times you change your mind, that's what motorhomes are all about. :wine:Enjoy your evening sounds like you've earned it today. Lol.

Judge is arena blanca in Benidorm mate or a way outside??? X

It is already in our plans, we have regularly travelled from Alcossebre to Cabo de Gata and as well the numerous mentions on this forum the area was recommended to us by some friends a few years ago.
We were wary of venturing 'into the unknown' with the 5'er and then the caravan but now we have the Globecar.....:)

Love Cabo de Gata - went there in Feb this year for the third time :)
